DATA VISUALIZATION‘What does it mean’

Data visualization is the graphicrepresentation of informationand data.

It involves producingvisual elements likecharts, graphs, maps andimages that communicaterelationships and patternsin the data.

The essence of data visualization is to improve understanding, tell a story and bring the data to life.

SABI used low-literateinfographics, graphs andcharts to present evidenceto various audiences.

This includes showing images that explains the data obtained from their community.

Infographics helped community people visualize their responses and validate the findings.

CREATING DATA VISUALS ‘What you need to know’

Understand the data

▪ Look at the indicator and understand what the data is saying.

▪ Understanding the data makes it easy to interpret.

Consider the context

▪ This is all about knowing your audience

Illustrate Effectively▪ Spend some time creating the right

illustration that fits the data and your audience

▪ For low literate infographics, conduct a field testing exercise to know whether your illustrations is fit for purpose.

Keep it simple

▪ Avoid extra graphic that will cause distraction from the data.

▪ Aim for a simple-clean design

Consider colors

▪ If you have multiple graphs or images that present similar data, make sure the color for each graphic is consistent

Explain the data

▪ Find somewhere to explain that data that was used in the visualization. It will serve as a useful guide.

▪ It’s important to include headings, labels and dimensions that was used

Tell a story▪ Telling a story is a useful way to engage your audience

▪ Take your audience on a journey. Let the story be easily visualized.

Choose the right tool

▪ There are lots of ways to visualize your data. Use the tool that will visualize the data the way you want it.
