HORNBY HELPLINE ASKING FOR HELP
Everyone in Hornby & Farleton is very
welcome to ask for help whenever needed and this is how you do it:
a) Phone the Institute Monday – Saturday between 10.00am and 12.00pm (015242 22227) to ask for what you need.
If the job requires transport to be arranged, please could you give 48 hours’ notice, and more notice would be even more appreciated.
(I’m afraid that we can’t run as an emergency service as the
coordinators and volunteers aren’t always free to respond im-mediately. Some are at work and others may just be out for the day.)
b) Please don’t ask the volunteer who helps you the first time to
come on subsequent occasions as we try to spread out every-one’s tasks equally. Just phone the Institute as above.
HORNBY PENSIONERS' ASSOCIATION Can It Really Be February Already? Yes, folks, it really is AGM time again: 7pm on Tuesday, 11
th February, in
Hornby Institute. As well as our (hopefully) short business meeting, the evening will include 2020 membership enrolment, the new trips programme and a Jacob's Join Supper, for which members are invited to bring a contribution (sweet or savoury). We look forward to seeing old and new members there. Games Evenings: This month our Whist and Dominoes evenings in Hornby Institute will be on Saturdays 8
th and 22
nd February. Admis-
sion including light refreshments and 2 free raffle tickets costs £2. Play starts at 7pm promptly, and EVERYBODY IS VERY WELCOME TO COME ALONG.

‘Anne of Green Gables’

on Friday 31st January and Saturday 1st February at the Instute.

Maud Montgomery, the cast will include younger members as well

HORNBY INSTITUTE ROOF APPEAL The Institute roof is leaking and causing damage to the ceilings of some of the upstairs rooms. The water ingress may develop into seri-ous decay if left unattended. A completely new roof is not required, only targeted repairs. The estimated cost of repairs is about £22,000. HVT Trustees are working to obtain grant funding, but even if this is successful it is clear that funds will still be needed from the community. Details of the problem, and information about the Roof Appeal and as-
sociated fundraising can be found in the Carnegie room, and on the
Hornby Village website - www.hornbyvillage.org.uk

HORNBY POOL Happy, healthy new year wishes from LVCS
Hornby Swimming pool! 2019 was a very busy year for the LVCS community pool, proving very popular with more than a dozen schools, along with specialist clubs, societies and voluntary organisations and a growing number of public swimmers taking full advantage of a range of activities from aqua-fit to lane swim and family fun days.
It’s been a challenging time since re-opening and at the AGM chair-man Bob McGachie resigned for personal reasons and Phil Mugford took over with immediate effect along with a new board of trustees to take the pool forward. The small family-friendly pool is doing very well but still affected by some inherited technical problems impacting on profitability.
A new business plan is currently being drafted and the new manage-ment team is confident that 2020 will see improved viability to ensure a bright long-term future for this valuable community resource.
The trustees would like to thank Lune Valley residents for all the initial support and encouragement – it’s your pool so why not make it a new year’s resolution to come along and let us know what you think. We’d love to hear from you.

HORNBY CAROL SINGING Wonderful news - Hornby Villagers raised the amazing sum of £1115 for the Christmas Night Shelter for the Lancaster Homeless this year!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The Shelter’s organisers were so grateful as it made all the difference in their ability to provide breakfast, lunch, tea & beds for 5 whole days over the Christmas period. Homelessness nationally has risen by 9%
between 2018 and 2019, & the LDHAS has been helping a gradually rising number of clients. They are really grateful for our contribution to finance this short period of respite from cold, wet &
winds.
At this time of worldwide political, economic & climatic turmoil we may feel helpless, but we have proved that we can still do our part in our
own little part of the world.

HORNBY-WITH-FARLETON PARISH COUNCIL 9
th January 2020 meeting
Carolyne Walsh attended the meeting to introduce herself and the ‘Community Connectors Team’ of which there are 3 members em-ployed by Lancaster City Council. They will be going out to Parish Councils and residents and seek to improve links between us and the council – if you need any advice on Council matters please let me know as I can ask Carolyne for advice. Dan from Story Homes also attended the meeting to update us on their planning application. He reported there has been progress, but that they have had a lot of back and forth with the Highways department regarding the junction improvements, most notably, the inclusion of a roundabout at the pointer where Fleet Lane meets the A683. After a number of consultations, LCC have now concluded that they won’t support the roundabout as an ‘improvement’ and they suggest that the scheme is moved forward with a T junction instead. DID YOU KNOW... The Parish Council has a pot of money available for donations to local groups and/or charitable causes. If you think we could help you, please get in touch on the details below, so that we can look at how we can get involved. More detailed minutes will be available in the folder in the Institute, once approved at the next meeting. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 13th February and the agenda will be placed in the parish notice boards on Monday 10th Feb-ruary. Miss. Sarah Towers (Clerk) [email protected] Hornby Butchers, 70 Main Street, Hornby, Lancaster, LA2 8JT

PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG
It has been highlighted that there has been a signifi-cant increase in dog mess in the village. Whilst most dog owners are responsible and clean up after their animals, it is evident that some are less so. Hornby Day Nursery walk the children up and down the village twice a day and have commented that it is “everywhere”. Apart from it being unsightly and unpleasant, especially
if stood/slipped on, there are the obvious health risks. Poop bags are available at the village shops, so please, please dis-pose of your dog’s waste responsibly.

CATON THEATRE INTEREST GROUP I cannot find the words to describe our theatre trip to the pantomime Peter Pan. WOW might cover it. Super, fantas-tic, the best ever!
We were buzzing when we left the theatre. The coach was waiting for us and the trip down the prom with all the Christmas lights made the perfect end to our day.
Our next outing is on the 2nd
May 2020. A matinee performance of the powerful and moving story of ‘Evita’ told in a musical. Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and words by Tim Rice, at the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick. Cost £32.00 for coach and a seat at the front of the balcony.
All our tickets have been reserved and we have started a waiting list for cancellations. Payment required on or before the 7
th March to con-
firm your booking.
Pick up as usual 10am at the Victoria Institute then on to pick up in Brookhouse. Pick up in Ingleton, Melling and Hornby can be arranged.
To book or for further information call: Benita on 01524 771943 or Jean on 01524 770980

CATON LEISURE CLUB Why not pop into the Thomas Storey Room to hear one of the speakers and of course have a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit.
3rd February - Graham Kemp “The Love life of John O’ Gaunt” Graham is Assistant Museum Manager at Lancaster Castle in charge of records. His very popular talk today is about the three wives of John O' Gaunt. He has also written a book on Lancaster that is due to be published shortly.
10th February - Barbara Broadbent “Kaleidoscope” Barbara chooses her favourite selection of slides highlighting her love of the natural environment.
17h February - Christine Workman “Lancaster Suffragists & Suffragettes” Christine started researching Selina Martin for her history lessons to give the students a local interest. She’s been researching women's history ever since. Her talk today is about three Lancastrian women who took part in the campaign for the vote for women: Annie Croft Helme, Selina Martin and Mary Redhead. It looks at what they did in the campaign, as well as giving the bigger picture of the campaign.
24th February - Tim Foreman 'Anecdotes of an Ordinary Gentleman' 'It was once said that Tim would be out of his depth in a car park puddle. The stories that follow are all based on things that have happened to him along life’s journey. His wife and the mirror, the credit crunch and sav-ing money, the lighthouse, flying aeroplanes, trying to play golf, watching his family grow and what to do when all else fails. Simple, funny and true.'
