P R I E S T F I E L D S CHAIRMAN’S WELCOMEWelcome to Medway Rugby Club

Today we are pleased to welcome Beckenham, Old Alleynians and Cranbrook as our visitors to Medway today for the 1st XV, Extra 1sts and the Crusaders. Whilst the Development Squad are away at Thanet. On Sunday the Ladies 1st XV are at home to Sutton and Epsom and the ladies Development Squad are also at home to Barnes. So please encourage everyone to come up the club and support all the games, as we are sure that your support will be very much appreciated. We would like to wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season and hope that a good game is enjoyed by all.

More importantly we would like to welcome our massive girls section who are having a leap year lunch up at Medway today. In excess of 85 players and parents are attending the lunch. They are also sponsoring the Jim Kennedy Memorial Game against Beckenham and will have the pleasure of choosing the “Man of the Match” This is a section of the club that has grown massively over the last few years and we would like to thank all of the coaches, managers and parents who have helped to make this happen.

We would also like to ask you to become a member of the Co-Op. As a member when you shop with the Co-Op, 1% of what you spend on selected Co-Op branded products and services, goes to support local causes through their Local Community Fund. All you need to do is join up and select Medway Rugby Club as your local community cause and it only costs a £1.

Due to the time of year, the grass (now mud) is continuing to get worse, so please can you refrain from parking on the grass (now mud) wherever possible and when you are driving on the club grounds please observe the 5mph speed limit and allow plenty of time to stop. We are looking at having various age groups take control of the car parking, especially on a Sunday morning. Mainly to direct traffic and advise when the car park is full, so as to make everyones life that little bit easier.

More importantly please don’t park too close to the traffic islands on Priestfields, as this prevents the buses from getting through and please DO NOT park on Lillymonte Drive!

SUPPORTED BY MEDWAY RFC GIRLS 2020

It all started with a discussion in November 2016, “lets grow the girls section at Medway RFC”. At that time, the girls section had a predicted 14 players in the U18 and 1 player in the U15. A plan was hatched, and so it started. In late 2016 our Medway coaches Mark Mariott, Gordon Stone, Gemma Duncan and Mark Errington went into the local girls schools to run after school rugby clubs. The girls were handed a flyer and were asked to provide parent contact details if they were interested in trying rugby at Medway RFC. As contact details were obtained, we contacted parents and arranged to run some training sessions in January 2017.

We ran our first training session on the second Sunday of January 2017. As the start time approached a few nervous looking girls came wandering onto Priestfields (most of them with a full face of makeup), ready to start their rugby journey. It was a success, despite the cold the girls had a fabulous time, they laughed, they chatted, they learned new skills and made new friends.

As word got around, the girls contacted their friends, and more came along, and the section grew to 30 players. After a couple of months of training, we embarked on our first ever games of rugby. We lost our first game, and then won our second game – I still remember the feeling today.

It wasn’t all easy though, one Sunday in early January myself and Mat Bacon turned up to coach the girls on a particularly cold day. Only 1 girl turned up. Rather than turn her away we ran a training session – two coaches, one player. We taught her every kick in book, grubber, box, drop, clearance, the Gary Owen. Today that girl is still at Medway and just got picked to play for Kent County U15s last month.

The season of 2016/17 was soon over, but we didn’t want to stop the momentum of our early growth. So we continued through the summer with a series of events, Inner Warrior, touch tournaments and some summer fitness. By the start of the 2017/18 season we had just enough girls to run an U13 and U18 team, and clustered with local side Aylesford at U15s to create a team.

The player centred approach we took, where everyone is welcomed at Medway and given the same coaching/opportunities worked. We had great

success on the pitch and even more off the pitch. Our motto #lovedandfeared was created, its meaning simple; on the pitch we want to be feared, off the pitch we want to be loved. We got sponsorship and won the Tesco Bags of Help competition, bringing in £9000 of money during the season. With this money we bought the entire girls section shorts, tops, sub coats and paid for Rachael Burford to run a training day. We ran events off the pitch – movie nights, trampolining, touch tournaments, Twickenham visits, xmas parties, BBQs. We grew to 50 girls during the season, the success demonstrated at our end of season event where we welcomed over 120 players and parents to celebrate, including England U20 Taz Bricknell and Scotland/Quins legend Deb McCormack.

A Packed out Training Session – One Team: 13s, 15s, 18s and Ladies

Now into our third full season we have one of the largest girls sections in the South East, with over 80 players in the Medway Girls section, 10 coaches, 3 managers and an amazingly supportive network of parents, siblings and friends. We run three full teams at U13, U15 and U18. Our success on and off the pitch is something our whole club is and proud of. We’ve hosted some of the biggest girls competitions over the years, including the X7s in March 2019, hosting 250 players from across Kent playing over 50 matches.

We are fully supportive in growing the girls game, whatever club they play for. We wouldn’t be this successful though without the whole club, from Sian Price in the kitchen turning out food after our matches, Tina and Gordon in the shop (sales have gone up a lot as the girls love the merch), Mark and Phil running hospitality and catering for our parties, our club referees who give up their Sunday afternoons and our many other parent/club volunteers. So a huge thank you to you all.

MATCH REPORTMedway travelled down to West Sussex on Saturday to take on a Chichester side lying 8th in the league with 10 wins. Chichester are renowned for being tough to beat on their ground and so it proved.

The game kicked off on a good Oaklands Park playing surface with the home side playing with the breeze at their back. With only 2 minutes gone Chichester scored. Some weak defence combined with some good handling skills saw them scamper over out wide for an unconverted try.

On 10 minutes Medway responded. A scrum penalty was won on the half way line. Dan Harvey kicked in the corner and Bill Sandison combined with Jordan Stubbington to secure the ball. The Medway forwards combined and drove over the line securing the try through Captain Tom Beaumont. Harvey converted and Medway led 5-7.

Despite playing into the wind Medway started to dominate possession and go through the phases. A penalty for not releasing at the breakdown saw James Dance tap and go and get behind the home defensive line. With Chichester scrambling the ball was fed to Max Bullock who changed the direction of the attack and fed Antony Clement who ran a superb short line to score near the posts. Harvey converted to make the score 5-14.

Medway were then reduced to 14 men with lock Jordan Stubbington sent to the bin for transgressing on the Medway line. Chichester opted for the line out and after a secondary effort eventually scored an unconverted try in the corner. 10-14

The re-start did not go the required 10 metres and Chichester put the ball behind Medway. Although the ball was recovered the clearance kick failed to make touch and Chichester ran it back with good handling to score again. This time the conversion was good and Chichester led 17-14.

With Medway restored to a full compliment Chichester were still pressing to improve their lead. Medway defended their line well forced the turnover retained the ball and kicked it out to end the half behind.

The second half kicked off and Medway gained early possession. They went through some phases gaining good ground with Tom Beaumont, Jordan Stubbington, Bill Humphrey, Dan Huntley and Bill Sandison all very prominent. A penalty was won on the Chichester 10 metre line and Dan Harvey kicked it to level the scores. The next 15 minutes was a pretty even affair both sides trying to impose themselves on the other. That

was until Medway had their second player sent to the sin bin. James Dance was penalised for a breakdown offence. The versatile Sam Garofalo moved into the scrum half role.

Chichester opted for the line out but improved defence with Christian Hechter proving a nuisance to the opposition in the lineout held them at bay.

Medway replaced Bill Humphrey with Ciaran Slater, with Jack Nickalls having replaced Ross Cooley at half time. Both players worked hard with their limited game time.

On 70 minutes Chichester re-took the lead. A kick in behind the Medway defence saw the ball re-gathered by the home side for them to score an unconverted try out wide.

The last 10 minutes was all Medway. This on the back of a dominant scrum which had seen Ross Cooley, Bill Sandison, Jack Nickalls and Alex O’Leary dominate their counterparts throughout the game.

With time up Medway eventually managed to secure a scrum under the home posts as the last play. Medway drove for the line. After 3 pens for illegal scrummaging the referee gave a yellow card to the home front row player.

Medway opted for the scrum. Again and again Medway drove for the winning try but the home side transgressed each time. A second yellow was issued to another front row player. Controversially and to the amazement of both the home and away supporters the referee did not award the penalty try instead the scrums then became uncontested. Another penalty followed.

Medway were forced to use their obvious numerical advantage and the ball was moved wide for Alfie Orris to touch down for the try and level the score. The conversion hit the post and the match finished a draw.

The supporters of both sides were treated to a real see saw game where both sides looked to play good rugby. Although Medway dominated at the end Chichester also has their own periods where they had opportunities to add to their score when Medway were twice down to 14 men.

Coach Taff Gwilliam said “This is always a tough place to go and Chichester’s home form belies their league position. There are no easy games in this league which recent results testify to”. When asked about the scrums at the end of the game said “The referee made decisions as he saw it and we have to accept that. He is a good referee”.

Zeki Yesmilen & Matthew Beard.

They all played their part in a 61-31 victory over Sussex at Horsham ensuring Kent qualified for the National quarter-finals. Also in the squad are two others Medway players, Cullen Daly and Zach Garratt, both whom missed the game through injury.

To have five players representing Kent in this age group is a marvellous achievement for the club and testament to how we support and develop our young players.

Our congratulations go to each and everyone of them.

THE CLUB THROUGH THE DECADES

February 1940 – World War II

February 1950 – At Dover, Rochester met with their first defeat since the end of December. Joe Hilderbrands kicked a penalty to equalise. Dave Evans then made a strong run and when tackled, passed inside to the supporting Wally Elvy who scored under the posts. Hilderbrands converted. Ian Wilkie, at hooker, led the forwards magnificently. However, with the home team leasding narrowly, a last-minute penalty opportunity for victory, was missed leaving the final score 9-8 to Dover.

Rochester 1st. XV: 1949-50Back row: ‘Pop’ Lintern (Chairman), F Cousins, D Evans, K Phillips, G Reynolds, C Henriques, R Molyneux.Middle row: B Hodgson, D Gautrey, J Hilderbrands (Capt), J Kingdom, N Parkes, D Pring. Front row: I Wilkie, W Elvy.

February 1960 – Rochester ‘A’ XV returned in high spirits following their 47-6 victory over V.C.D. During the game, Dave Jones, their captain passed his personal tally of 100 points and since he was not usually amongst the try-scorers, this was a fair reflection of his kicking ability. The team’s try scorers were Turpin (3), Williams, Hunter, Brooker, Young and Atkins.

February 1970 - In bitter conditions at the Garrison Ground, a Medway Select XV played a representative match against Cwmbran from Wales. Although the Medway XV lost by 6 points to 5, there were several heart-warming aspects for those eager to see better class rugby in the Medway Towns. Medway XV: T Evans (Ro); D Thackery (US), D Morgan (Ro), M Masters (OA), C Rowles (Ro); J Hughes (US), D Verdin (OA); J Woodcock (OA), J Yorke (OA), F Nightingale (US), T Butt (US), T Jackson (OA); T Higgins (OA), C Lee (Capt.) (US), S McLoughlin (US). (Ro) Rochester, (OA) Old Anchorians, (UN) United Services February 1980 – Producing possibly their best display of the season Medway comfortably beat Lewes 15-6 who were one the top Sussex clubs. Some excellent attacking play,

based on sound defence was rewarded with Mick Shaw, a prop, scoring as he dummied his way through to score. Trevor French then chased a kick-ahead with determination and won the race for the touch-down. Dave Marlow grabbed possession at a loose-maul and crashed over from close-range. John Rogers kicked a penalty to make absolutely sure.

Medway 1st XV: D Morant; T Robertson, T Armstrong, D Lund, D Tasker; G Connell, T French; M Shaw, G Longstaff, P Woodward; J Hillier, D Marlow; A Rogers, A Watts, J Rogers (Capt).

January 1990 – Playing against the wind in the first-half, Medway found themselves 15-0 down to their visitors Betteshanger. The second-half saw the home team make a great come-back. Gordon Connell kicked three penalties with Dave Davies getting yet another push-over try to bring the score back to 15-15. This was his 34th try of the season and a new club try-scoring record. However, a last determined effort saw the visitors score the winning try.

Medway 1st XV 1989-90Back row: D Pagden, D Marlow, G Downs, N Rogers, A Rogers, J Rogers, J Hillier, S Postill. Front row: M Marriott, C Germany, I Dance (Capt), G Longstaff, P Green, N Parris, S Anderson.

Medway 2nd. XV’s match against Betteshanger they had to put in a great second-half recovery as they were 13 points adrift at the interval. Wayne Nicholls went over in the corner and Simon Postill on the other wing scored for Adam Hamblin to convert. Scrum-half Steve Meadows scored following another dynamic Medway scrum. Andy Green added the fourth, again converted by Hamblin. With the score at 23-20 to Betteshanger, Medway ran out of time and would regret the two soft tries given away early in the game.

January 2010 – One match but two defeats for Medway as they lost to Folkestone in a London South East 3 league match which doubled up as Kent Plate tie. Without many key players, Medway found themselves 25-0 down at the break. However, a spirited second-half performance saw the visitors reduce the final score through tries from Luke Burns and Bobby Ellis.
