FOREWORDThis Summary has been provided to assist District, Zone and Club Service Chairpersons in the planning and conduct of this major

MD201 National Project in support of our Lions Clubs International Major Global Cause – Diabetes.

Earlier this year the Council of Governors adopted “That Council, in relation to Diabetes, promotes as its Key Direction to conduct activities and projects that Promote Healthy Lifestyle and improve Education awareness about Diabetes”.This “whole of MD” national promotion is our first effort to support World Diabetes Day, with all Clubs encouraged to participate in this National Day of Action. This MD201 Diabetes Project will enable us to:-

Maximise Lions action and focus our effort in one co-ordinated major Diabetes Project Maximise PR and Public Awareness (National and Local) of what Lions are doing in the Fight against Diabetes Maximise Fund Raising in support of Diabetes Awareness

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY

Conduct a National proactive Lions Awareness and Recruitment Display in every location to attract/recruit New Members both as individuals, and where-ever possible, as a new Special Purpose Club Branch or Chartered Club of interested health professionals, fitness specialists, fund-raisers or caring individuals who want to make a difference

These guidelines are by no means exhaustive and should be treated as a guide, mindful also that there are different regulations and requirements that vary State to State. Please refer to Local Authority and State laws as they apply to your own community/location.

Together with MD201 National Diabetes Coordinator PDG Pat Mills and the MD 201 Global Action Team, I commend this Project to you, and thank you for your dedication and commitment to ensure another successful promotion of your Lions Club and our wonderful Lions Organisation.

So, what are the plans for “Lions Lap The Map” Every club being encouraged to participate, either in their own community, combined Zones or in a major Regional

location.

Every club to report the length of their Walk and number of participants, with a combined distance travelled to exceed Australia’s circumference (25,760 Klms including Tasmania and other larger islands).

Clubs encouraged to Video their activity and post to Lions Australia Face Book, so that it gives the impression of a “relay around Australia” (more details to follow)

The “signature activity” will be a self-paced “low level” walk of varying distances as set in each location, but not exceeding 5 klm, with “time of day” also to suit local conditions, where:-

o Families can push children in their stroller, kids can ride their bikes or skate-board etc

o Everyone can participate

o Each participating Club or group to have it’s own “Baton” or “Mascot” to complete the journey (The opportunity to promote Fun plus participation – maybe a local prize for best theme)

o All to Register before commencement, and to receive a simple “Certificate of Achievement” on completion (format to be supplied) – PLUS all offered a complimentary “Diabetes Type 2 Self - Assessment Test” (AusDrisk)

o Prizes for best dressed Team/Family/individual

o Have “Donation Tins” firmly on display, with entry being a “Gold Coin” donation

o Have a Raffle (Fresh Fruit and Vegie Tray). After all what is a Lions project without a Raffle?

o All funds raised on the day to be applied to Lions Diabetes Awareness

o Encourage Clubs to seek donations/sponsorship before the event, and encourage Schools, Community Organisations, Sporting Clubs etc. to enter a Team

o Partner with local Diabetes and other organisations/foundations to provide support/information booths/ healthy cooking demonstrations/nutritionists/ yoga, Tai Chi or other simple exercise regimes

o Cold drinks (water or juice) – for sale

o Food available for sale – sausage sizzle or a healthy hamburger and salad, snack packs of Carrot & Celery Sticks

o Conduct other low-level activity e.g. kids soccer, park cricket, bocce bowls, 3 legged race – use your imagination…..

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY

Conduct a proactive Lions Awareness and Recruitment Display to attract and Recruit new members

More detail will be provided by your District Governor and District Global Service Team Coordinator in the months ahead, and will be a great opportunity to combine MD & local P/R resources to promote this event as a major Diabetes Service

Project and Fund Raiser for your Club, District and MD201

Let’s all have a fun day promoting a healthy lifestyle!

GUIDELINES FOR DIABETES TESTING

Preparation

Please use the following link to locate Diabetes Educators in your area who will assist you with all aspects of screening (Find a CDE)https://www.adea.com.au/about-us/On the left of the home page near the bottom is an area for postcodes – enter your local postcode and a list of contact names will appear.

To gain maximum exposure and effect for your Project, please ensure you have covered all aspects of PR including:-• Alert your community to the testing • Post on Facebook• Local newspaper, radio and community billboards• Flyers in businesses, schools, Libraries etc

On the day of the event• Keep the area clean & organised• Assist with record keeping• Provide education materials for handout• ”ASK” participants if they would like to know more about Lions – distribute Lions

Membership Brochures, have a “Prospect List”, and follow up all enquiries with an invitation into Membership
