GET A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGEThe Diploma in Fine and Applied Arts is a unique qualification with elective options offered at no other South African tertiary institution. This qualification enables you to specialise in any two of the following fine and applied arts disciplines, namely ceramics, fibre arts, glass, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and surface design. Work Integrated Learning components make this a career focused programme that optimises opportunities for vocational excellence, cross-disciplinary originality and practice based innovation and will enable you to become a fine artist, innovative designer, crafter, product developer or an entrepreneur contributing to the creative industries and the economy.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSThe requirements for access for applicants who obtained a national senior certificate in or after 2008 are a National Senior Certificate with a bachelor’s degree or a diploma endorsement, or an equivalent qualification, with an achievement level of at least 3 for English (home language or first additional language).

SELECTION CRITERIATo be considered for this qualification, applicants must have an Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 17.

ASSESSMENT PROCEDURESApplicants who meet these minimum criteria will be invited to submit a portfolio for evaluation, and to complete a questionnaire. Aspects that are taken into consideration are: Potential to complete the course successfully; Creativity; Two-dimensional and Three-dimensional skills; Design ability; Drawing skills; and Sense of colour, general potential and craftsmanship.

The requirements for access for applicants who obtained a senior certificate before 2008 are a Senior Certificate or an equivalent qualification. To be considered for this qualification, applicants must have an Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 17. The requirements for access for applicants with a national certificate (vocational) are a National Certificate (Vocational) with a bachelor’s degree or a diploma endorsement, with at least 50% for English (home language or first additional language) and 50% for Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, 50% for Life Orientation (excluded for APS calculation), 60% for any other three compulsory vocational subjects and 50% for the fourth subject. To be considered for this qualification, applicants must have an Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 27. Applicants who meet these minimum criteria will be invited to submit a portfolio for evaluation, and to complete a questionnaire. Aspects that are taken into consideration are: Potential to complete the course successfully; Creativity; Two-dimensional and Three-dimensional skills; Design ability; Drawing skills; and Sense of colour, general potential and craftsmanship.

Access can also be achieved through the RPL process.

ADVICE TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENTSProspective students should please note that selection for programmes presented at the Faculty of the Arts will be possible only after the successful completion of the relevant evaluation process. Please apply well in advance: we would like to suggest from March and not later than 31 July.

MINIMUM DURATIONThree years; day classes.

INTAKE FOR THE QUALIFICATIONJanuary only.

CAREER PROFILEThe prospective student should have an interest in and understanding of the wider visual arts industry. Students develop a personal language and their own processes, ideas and content, together with creative, technical and critical skills. The course enables the development of an authentic, personal approach to art making, relevant to contemporary art and discourse, in preparation for a chosen career in the visual arts industry.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTSIn 2019, current postgraduate student Kgaogelo Mashilo was the winner in the Fashion Category of the PPC Imaginarium art competition and was selected to participate in the Rand Merchant Bank talent unlock 2019 mentorship program. B Tech student Viola Greyling won the 2019 South African Reserve Bank Scholar-ship which is awarded annually to a final year student in Gauteng. Graduate Philiswa Lila was the national winner of the Gerard Sekoto prize of the 2018 ABSA L’Atelier art competition, following in the footsteps of fellow graduate Banele Khoza who won this prize in 2017. Banele opened his own gallery, BKhz Studio, in Braamfontein in 2018. Other recent achievements by students and alumni include Kgaogelo Mashilo and Paballo Majela, along with staff member Zelda Stroud, who made the 2.5m bronze sculpture of the late Oliver Reginald Tambo which was installed at OR Tambo International in 2017. Banele Khoza won the SA Taxi Art Awards of 2017, and Graduate Michael Selekane won Best Visual Artist of the Year category in the 2018 SATMA (South African Traditional Music Achievements) Awards.
