1 2019 SPIE Student Chapter Annual Report Prepared by: Darya Prokopova Treasurer Executive Summary: The Samara Student Chapter was established in August 2006. We hold meetings every two months, organize a conference for schoolchildren and support the of XVII Annual National Youth Contest-Conference for Optics and Laser Physics 2019. A cell was created to support students involved in research in optics and photonics at Samara University. This year, for the first time, we took part in the All-Russian Science Festival, in our city the festival was held on the territory of Samara University. We prepared the platform “Demonstration of Optical Phenomena” where we showed and told everyone who was interested in optical phenomena, confirming the wave and particle theory of light, as well as optical illusions. During the festival, our site was visited by many people of all ages. The youngest visitor was three years old, and the oldest was 70. This is an amazing inspiring experience. One of the biggest challenges we faced this year was succession planning. Many of the 2018-2019 officers graduated in May 2019. We worked to ensure that the new 2019-2020 officers in the range of the level of training, so that future officers will have a better continuity of training for managers. This year we had the opportunity to invite SPIE lecturer (Visiting Lecturer). We invited Dr. Ekaterina Borisova. She gave an excellent 2 lectures in different days on optical spectroscopy of biological tissues “Optical spectroscopy of biological tissues – tool for initial cancer diagnostics and monitoring of therapies”. We also conducted excursion tour on Biophononics lab in our University.

October 14 we held workshop with students of the different Russian SPIE Chapters (Orel State Univ. Chapter, Saratov State Univ. Chapter, Lomonosov Moscow State Univ. Chapter et.al.). Students from different chapters from Russia came to the XVII Annual National Youth Contest-Conference for Optics and Laser Physics 2019. A round table was organized spontaneously, where we met and discussed problems in the activities of the chapters, areas of our activities, opportunities and advantages that SPIE provides.

Meetings of chapter members.

Conclusions and Recommendations This year we have gained positive experience from participating in the All-Russian Science Festival. Two of our members took the opportunity to join OPIC with Officer Travel Grant (Kseniya Efimova and Anastasia Lykina ) We also gained positive experience in communicating with SPIE Student Member from different cities and universities. True, it turned out a little spontaneously. Now that we have contacts, we can plan in advance a round table on the work of chapters in Russia.
