An industry leader in the area of genomic technology, Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI) was the first beef breed association to adopt the single-step methodology for incorporating DNA into the breed’s genetic evaluation. This ground-breaking step resulted in Santa Gertrudis becoming the first Bos indicus-influenced beef association to offer its members and cattle-buying customers genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs).
The single-step genomic prediction utilizes DNA information to measure the actual amount of relationship between animals in a breed’s data set. This cutting-edge technology ensures information is more accurate and predictable than a pedigree and performance prediction alone, and has allowed cattlemen utilizing the Santa Gertrudis genetic package to make positive, profitable breeding decisions – identifying animals that perform at the highest level, regardless of environmental conditions.
SGBI members continue to place selection pressure on traits that positively influence profitability. Profit starts with a live calf and increases when industry endpoint targets are hit. The addition of two fertility EPDs in 2018 – Heifer Pregnancy and Breed Back – emphasize that Santa Gertrudis breeders are focused on reproductive efficiency.
In addition, recently released harvest data, collected by the West Texas A&M University Beef Carcass Research Center, validates that Santa Gertrudis cattle hit industry endpoint targets. Purebred steers, representing 25 different Santa Gertrudis sires, graded a phenomenal 96 percent Choice/Premium Choice. Regardless of marketing strategy – selling by the pound at weaning, retaining ownership and grid marketing, establishing consumer-direct markets or taking advantage of the replacement-female market – Santa Gertrudis genetics ensure that profitable herd goals can be achieved.

The foundation of breed associations’ genetic evaluations is expected progeny differences (EPDs). EPDs are predictions of how an animal’s future progeny are expected to perform relative to other animals’ progeny listed in the breed association’s database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure (plus or minus) consistent with each trait being evaluated, and calculated utilizing pedigree and performance information. Years of research demonstrates that EPDs are the most reliable indicator of an animal’s true genetic merit. EPDs should be used to select for more or less of a trait, with the goal of finding the optimum trait(s) for an operation’s environment and marketing scheme.
Santa Gertrudis Breeders International (SGBI), an industry leader in genomic technology, was the first beef breed association to utilize the single-step method for incorporating DNA into EPD calculations. The SGBI single-step genomic prediction utilizes DNA information to measure the actual amount of relationship between animals in an evaluation. In 2013, SGBI released the first genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (DNA verified) for Bos indicus-influenced cattle.
The incorporation of DNA into the breed’s genetic evaluation results in information that is more accurate and predicable than a pedigree and performance prediction alone. SGBI’s genetic evaluation has been reviewed by the nation’s leading animal geneticists and utilizes more than 10,000 genotypes validated on 10K, 20K, and 50K SNP Chips. Thousands of ranch phenotypes and scan records collected over a 30-year period support the evaluation.
The SGBI genetic evaluation is recognized by industry members as one of the most comprehensive among the Bos indicus breeds. SGBI’s reliable genetic evaluation ensures that cattlemen can make sound comparisons, identifying animals that will perform at the highest level in the most challenging environmental conditions.
SGBI also offers two selection indexes for commercial cattlemen. Indexes are multi-trait selection tools designed to assist commercial producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. Indexes provide an estimate of how each sire’s future progeny are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database, if the sires were randomly

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW) – An indicator of birth weight and calving ease. WEANING WEIGHT (WW) – An indicator of growth from birth to weaning, measured from adjusted 205-day weights.YEARLING WEIGHT (YW) – An indicator of growth from birth to 1 year of age, measured from adjusted 365-day weights. MILK (MAT) – Measured in pounds of calf attributed to dam’s milk at weaning.TOTAL MATERNAL (TMAT) – A combination of weaning and milk EPDs, indicating a cow’s ability to bring a heavier calf to the weaning pen. SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE (SC) – An indicator trait for fertility in bulls and age of puberty in heifers. The unit of measure is centimeters. HEIFER PREGNANCY (HPRG) – A measure of the probability that a heifer will get pregnant as a yearling. Heifer Pregnancy EPDs are reported in units of percentage. A higher-EPD sire would be expected to have daughters with a greater probability, or chance, of becoming pregnant.BREED BACK (BBK) – A measure of the probability that a 2-year-old will be pregnant given she was listed as pregnant as a yearling. Breed Back EPDs are reported in units of percentage; a higher EPD sire would be expected to have daughters with a greater probability, or chance, of becoming pregnant than a sire with a lower EPD.
HOT CARCASS WEIGHT (HCW) – Expressed in pounds. A predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s offspring compared to offspring of other sires.MARBLING (MARB) – An evaluation of intramuscular fat deposition in the ribeye and expressed as a numerical marbling score. A one-unit change in the numerical marbling score is equal to a full USDA Quality Grade. BACKFAT (FAT) – Expressed in inches and measured between the 12th and 13th ribs.RIBEYE AREA (REA) – Predicts the differences of carcass ribeye area between the 12th and 13th rib and is expressed in square inches. TENDERNESS (TEND) – SGBI is one of a limited number of breed associations offering a Tenderness EPD. Tenderness is a trait that has end-product value, especially for producers targeting a grass-fed or freezer-beef market. Tenderness is measured in pounds of force required to cut through a 1-inch-thick piece of meat.ACCURACY VALUES – Accuracy can be defined as the relationship between an animal’s estimated EPD and the animal’s “true” EPD. As the accuracy value approaches 1.0, the reported EPD is more likely to represent the animal’s true genetic merit.

mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. SGBI’s indexes provide performance insight to producers marketing feeders by the pound ($ Growth) or retaining ownership through the feedyard (Carcass Rank).
$ GROWTH INDEX – A combination of weaning weight and yearling weight. Since WW is contained in YW, post-weaning gain (PWG) is used in the index to prevent double counting WW. As an example of the index, if an animal has a +30 Growth Index, its offspring will be on average worth $30 more as a yearling than the breed average, based strictly on weight. It is important to note, the $ Growth Index places zero economic weight on maternal traits, and utilizing the index as a replacement female selection tool could result in larger mature cow weight.
CARCASS RANK INDEX – Marbling score, hot carcass weight, ribeye area, backfat and tenderness are included in the index, which is weighted by the economics of carcass values. It places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. It is expressed as a numerical ranking within the breed from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest. For example, an animal with a score of 9 would be in the 80th percentile or would be better than 80 percent of the population in carcass composition. A ranking of 6 would place the animal in the 50th percentile. Seedstock producers focused on improved carcass quality are encouraged to utilize SGBI’s Marbling EPD in the decision-making process. Breeding cattle with a higher Marbling EPD should produce progeny with a higher degree of IMF and therefore higher quality grades. Utilizing the Carcass Rank Index as a seedstock selection tool could result in increased growth while negatively impacting Marbling.

“Danny” was purchased though the 2015 Houston Super Sale as the pick of the gain-tested bulls. His first calf crop was selected National Get of Sire at the 2017 National Show. They continue to perform well inside and outside of the ring as those first heifers are now calving. “Danny” has been a heifer producer, with the first calf crop producing nine heifers before the first bull, Slurpee 711, was born. “Danny” is thick, long and polled, and his calves carry those same traits. He has been an asset at Fulton Farms and is a solid performer.

Years ago, the King Ranch recognized the need not only to breed cattle that could perform in the harsh South Texas environment, but could also compete on the national level in terms of carcass traits. Consequently, they began incorporating high Marbling, Ribeye Area and Yield Grade selection criteria as part of their balanced-selec-tion approach. Today, King Ranch Santa Gertrudis and Santa Gertru-dis-cross cattle perform on the rail on par with any other cattle in the High Plains. King Ranch’s Santa Gertrudis foundational carcass genetics are of superior quality and often have the best carcass per-formance of any cattle in some of the largest Texas Panhandle feed-yards. Sire 97/10 has been, and remains, at the top of the breed in carcass and growth traits, and continues to be a significant part and influencer of our breeding and AI program.

TRUMP 5127 was one of the most widely used AI bulls for heifers currently in the breed. TRUMP TRAIN’s dam, Red Doc 5011, is a first-calf heifer sired by Never Before 1136 and out of a Red Doc Quien Sabe 0120 cow. Here at Wendt Ranches we believe “Dreamboat” has all the char-acteristics we are looking and breeding for in a herd sire. He was purchased from Briggs Ranches at their Fall Bull Sale in 2018. His numbers are good across the board. He exhibits tremendous thick-ness throughout, is moderately framed, structurally correct, has a very clean underline, is very gentle and has that great SANTA GER-TRUDIS look. And to add to “Dreamboat’s” story – his dam was 12 years old while raising him. Exportable semen will be available.

RDF NEVER SANK 5012 is one of the breed’s young sires that com-bines growth and carcass into an attractive, eye-appealing package. NEVER SANK scanned a 4.09% IMF and measured a 13.94 sq. in. ribeye. A low BW EPD, along with a YW EPD in the Top 1% of the breed result in a genetic package capable of siring a profitable calf, whether marketed at weaning or hanging on the rail. NEVER SANK females are extremely well balanced, uniquely made, moderate in frame and born with low birth weights. His female sexed semen is in high demand – one of his daughters sold for $9,000 at the Hefte/Strait Fall Production Sale. Sexed semen is available, and NEVER SANK semen is qualified for export, including Australia.
