COMMODORE’S NOTES We have had a splendid season of racing, training and family sailing with good winds and a full reservoir. We have welcomed many new sailors and enjoyed each other’s company immensely. I like being a member of our sailing club. The main season finishes on Sunday October 6th with the Jack Beattie Pursuit Trophy followed by the season’s wake. However for you fearless and centrally heated sailors this is not the end of sailing, we start the seven week Frostbite series on Sunday 13th October. So may the fun continue throughout the autumn and even into winter. Work parties For the physicists amongst you it seems that “Work is defined as a force causing the movement—or displacement—of an object. In the case of a constant force, work is the scalar product of the force acting on an object and the displacement caused by that force.” Hence the equation:

Our work parties are scheduled for Sunday October 13th and 20th starting at 10am they will be over by noon giving ample time for lunch before sailing in the afternoon. If you are able to come along and help it would be much appreciated and don’t forget that the work party attendance gains a credit against the 2019 subscriptions. For the pre-season work parties a total of 37 members attended which is a fantastic effort and an indication that we are a thriving club where members really contribute to our continued success; particularly as the second date had such awful weather. So it won’t be enough to match our pre-season attendance; we will need to absolutely surpass it! Trophy return Remember that all trophies need to be returned to the club on either of these work party days; sparklingly clean and polished. Get them ready now to enjoy those last few days of glory. Membership We have had a splendid year for recruitment with a total of 41 people joining us. Our most recent recruits since the last newsletter are: John Gallagher Supernova sailor Richard Sentance Joe Weston Eve Kelleher Steve Parker Paul Scott-Wilson Supernova sailor Kevin Shone Kathryn Shone Lydia Shone Benjamin Shone Jennifer Shone Isabelle Shone Brian Wilson Byte sailor We have also welcomed the following sailors from Toddbrook for the remainder of the season: Richard and Jane Thorpe Angela Cooper Kerry Ridgway Robert Richardson Matthew, Natasha, Emily and Benji Fox Malcolm Arnold Rebecca Glen Lisa, Lee and Alex Ashwood Malcolm Andrew Sue and John Blackwell Melanie, Nick, Millie and Jimi Cork Sue and John Blackwell Please do welcome our new members and do say hello to new people that you see around,

Clarification for boat insurance The requirement in our Bye laws for all boats and craft to be insured for use does apply to canoes and paddleboards. Please could all members check that their craft are fully insured as required. If you belong to a membership organisation such as the BCU you will probably probably find that your membership covers insurance but please do check. “ 7. All boats and craft must be covered by third party insurance of at least £3,000,000 even if the boat is

not in use. All members are required to confirm this on either the application form or renewal form” Financial matters Gift Aid We have now made our first claim to HMRC and will be making another for the end of the year. There will be a full report on amounts at the AGM. The process has become a little clearer in that the 25% is only claimable on the first £100 of any donation with a maximum of £25 on the any amount up to £1000. So if anyone feels particularly generous I would suggest that a maximum of £200 is donated in any year. Banking arrangements for the Regeneration Fund Our attempts to open a savings account with the Al Rayan bank proved to be too difficult but we have now opened a savings account with The Manchester Credit Union gaining a splendid rate of 2.5%. We have a deposit of £16000 Prize Giving and celebration The seasons Prize Giving and celebration will be held on Saturday November 23rd at the Poynton Legion Club; we will be sending the booking form with details soon but please make a note in your diaries now. We will again be having a Ceilidh band with caller for the dances and the seating will again be flexible with a range of food to be enjoyed buffet style. So please make every effort to join us for our annual celebration. You should already have the date in your diary. Annual General Meeting This year’s meeting is scheduled for Monday December 9th starting at 7.30 in the Mechanics Institute in Whaley Bridge. This is an important meeting in our calendar and the opportunity for all members to contribute to the development of the club. We have now established a norm of a high attendance at this meeting so if you are a regular attender please be there again. However, if you have never been before please do consider coming this year.

Committee membership All members of your two committees are volunteers and make a massive contribution to the well-being of the club. The membership is elected each year and new members are always welcome to volunteer for the positions. This year Judy Gibbons is standing down from her role as club secretary so we will need a new member to take up this role. I would like to thank Judy on behalf of all club members for her service to the club in this role for the last 15 years; all members of the GP committee will sorely miss the vibrant and perceptive contributions she has made. Your club committee members are elected every year so please do consider getting involved. If you are potentially interested let me know and I can arrange for you to attend our October meeting as a guest to see what we do. Please don’t be shy. Saturday Sailing

Sadly, this year’s Saturday sailing sessions are now drawing to a close. These sessions have

been very well attended by both our family members and leisure sailors. They have offered a

lovely relaxed atmosphere for just messing about on the water, honing our sailing skills and

making new friends.

We are getting quite a group of young enthusiastic sailors now, many of whom have competed in

the junior races held on Saturdays over the summer. It would be brilliant if we could build on this

next year and hopefully get more of you following Sam and Harry’s example by taking this to the

next stage by joining in the Sunday and/or Wednesday races.

Likewise, quite a few of our new adult members have also started racing on a Sunday.

Remember that its not just about coming first on the water, there is the handicap system which

benefits slower boats and also the Gold, Silver and Bronze fleet system which enables you to

have your own races within the main events.

Our fun day in July went very well, with lots crazy team races, incorporating sails, oars, inflatables

and wet sponges followed by a BBQ and a camp over (for the brave few).

A special thanks must be given to the members who gave up their Saturday afternoons to man the

safety boats, and run these sessions, especially to Andy Butler who went above a beyond to offer

tips, advice and encouragement nearly every week.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on the water next year.

Water levels

The reservoir has been very high all summer which has caused us some concern. Last year

seems to be quite unreal in comparison.

At its highest the water was actually touching the underneath of the verandah beams and the

“tideline” of debris was way beyond the seats outside the clubhouse; which is the highest that

anyone can remember. This was on the Wednesday before the Thursday when the Toddbrook

dam failed.

Page 5: 2019 September newsletter word - Combs Sailing Club...Remember that its not just about coming first on the water, there is the handicap system which benefits slower boats and also

This has caused damage to the tyre walls installed last summer particularly around the edges of

the slipways. We will need to address this and will work with the Canals & Rivers Trust to see how

they can help out.

Activities Day on 19th October

Please come along and join us for a day for members to try out new water based activities. So far we’ve planned the following:

• Free sailing • Sail training • Accompanied sailing • Paddle boarding • Sailboard • Canoeing

If you have skills, experience or craft that will help us out here please let us know; if so please contact Andy Butler directly: andyatofarm.co.uk

And of course do bring along any friends or family to have a go.

Club keys

Quite some time ago a set of club keys were given to someone in the clubhouse by a member of the Buxton Sub aqua club who had been doing a training exercise on our water. If you have them or know where they are please return them to Keith. Many thanks

High Peak Regatta

We are hosting this event this year as there is insufficient water in the Glossop reservoir and it would absolutely fantastic if as many members as possible could participate in this event.

Saturday October 12th with the first race starting at 10 am

Please let Amanda Wild know if you be taking part and if you could do a power boat duty on the day. amandajwildatgooglemail.com

Derbyshire Youth Sailing

This is a fantastic opportunity for our younger sailors to race against their own age group in a

friendly and encouraging atmosphere and to try out new waters. There are ten Saturday races

throughout the year held at various clubs throughout Derbyshire, plus extra training sessions,

team racing and the opportunity to enter additional competitions representing Derbyshire.

You would need to enter four events to qualify for their league, but you would be made very

welcome even if you can only attend a few.

Sam Rodman and Victoria Theaker have represented Combs at several of these events this year

and despite the enthusiasm of several more of our young sailors to compete in the home event at

Combs SC the horrendous weather blew them and several of the more experienced sailors off the

start line.

Page 6: 2019 September newsletter word - Combs Sailing Club...Remember that its not just about coming first on the water, there is the handicap system which benefits slower boats and also

The latest event was held at Trent Valley SC on the River Trent, which made for interesting

sailing. There was lots of tacking up and down the river and weaving in and out of barges,

pleasure cruisers and rowers; very different from Combs.

Victoria also went with the DYS team to the National Schools Sailing Association Regatta at Weymouth,

which was a fantastic event with over 150 boats, broken down into several fleets, all sailing in the

enormous and beautiful Weymouth Harbour.

The final race event for 2019 will be held at Swarkestone SC on the 26th October, with a race training

day booked in for 9th November also held at Swarkestone SC. The 2020 season will start in March but

keep an eye on the web site for extra preseason training sessions.

Club security

We now have a single key system for the front and inner gates. We also have put a padlock on the

toilet block gates that takes the same key. We hope that this will be useful if you are ever at the

club by yourself.

Remember that these locks have to be closed before you can release the key. See explanation

of the locking system later.

Page 7: 2019 September newsletter word - Combs Sailing Club...Remember that its not just about coming first on the water, there is the handicap system which benefits slower boats and also

Also please ensure that the outer gate is locked behind you if you are ever visiting the club by

yourself.

There have been occasions this year when the safe padlock has been left with the code in the

“open” position. Please remember to tumble the numbers when you close the safe.

Club closure for Asbestos survey We are hoping to improve the ladies’ changing facilities over the winter which will necessitate some internal works in the clubhouse. Given the age of our building we felt that it was important that we had a full asbestos survey before commencing any works. Consequently the clubhouse will be closed for the day on Monday October 7th. Duties

We will be including all duties related to training to contribute to the standard duty rota of four

sessions.

If you would prefer to have duties assigned on a training session please will you let Amanda Wild

know by email. We will do all that we can to make this possible. Remember that training sessions

mostly occur on Saturdays; the advantage for regular racers is that their racing will not be

hindered. amandajwildatgooglemail.com

If you haven’t sailed much this year

We are really keen to see as many members as possible sailing on the water at Combs and know that sometimes it is difficult to actually do it because of a wide variety of issues. It might be for example that the boat needs fixing or tuning so that it will actually perform well or that you may be nervous of racing, or… If you need help of any kind please do contact us and we will do our best to help overcome any problems and get you on to the water. Probably best to initially contact me and then I can liaise with other members to provide the support that you need. keith.munceyatbtinternet.com RYA Midlands Committee members have met with the new Midlands Region development officer Ben Hodgson. It was a very fruitful meeting and we’re hoping to develop tour relationship more fully over the coming year.

Sail Training 2019

For 2109, training took place over the planned 10 Saturday sessions between April and July, split into two distinct sets of 5 sessions. The thinking behind this was that the first 5 sessions would be for existing Combs members (junior and adult) mostly new to sailing, or improvers. The second 5 were essentially for people picked up from Push the Boat Out but also for those from the first sessions, wanting to continue.

Page 8: 2019 September newsletter word - Combs Sailing Club...Remember that its not just about coming first on the water, there is the handicap system which benefits slower boats and also

We were fortunate with the weather, with most sessions having ideal wind for training and made good progress to getting the trainees sailing independently with confidence and had fun in the process.

I would like to give a big thank you to all those helping with the training, whether the trainers themselves, the many people who helped on the day or parents of the young-uns who, as ever, gave invaluable assistance.

To ensure that we are offering a useful and effective training programme, I would really appreciate some feedback from those who took part (or their parents). Let me know whether we met your needs; was the course sufficiently structured; the right length, detailed enough and was there anything you would have liked to see included? Whatever your thoughts, please let me know, so we can improve if need be.

Send your thoughts to me at trainingatcombssailingclub.co.uk

PADLOCKS The padlock arrangement on the toilets has been changed and our early experience has been that some people have been having difficulty.

This is what you see when you go to unlock the

toilets. Two padlocks are connected by a bolt which goes through the hole in the staple. They can go either way up.

Use your club gate key to unlock the squarer padlock and remove it from the bolt. If the square padlock was at the top as in the picture above right you’ll need to hold the lower padlock and bolt to stop it falling on the floor.

Page 9: 2019 September newsletter word - Combs Sailing Club...Remember that its not just about coming first on the water, there is the handicap system which benefits slower boats and also

Lift the bolt and second padlock out of the staple (or take it out from the bottom if you started at the top right). It’s important to keep these bits together to make sure it’s replaced correctly.

If you use them to lock back the gate Locking is the reverse of unlocking. It’s easiest to put the over the Ladies toilet door they won’t bolt in from the top as shown here, and then fasten the get lost padlock through the hole in the bottom of the bolt. If you’ve read this far you are probably wondering why we need this arrangement. Various groups of people use the reservoir and have access to the toilets, and this allows access without needing lots of extra (expensive) keys.

Byte National championships Byte Nationals June 8th and 9th held at The Mumbles Yacht Club Louis, Rick and Victoria attended the nationals this year and, as you might expect did incredibly well. Louis was the overall winner with Rick finishing 4th; also a fantastic result for Victoria who finished 14th overall and 7th in the women’s competition. This was in a fleet of 24 competitors What a fantastic trio! Byte Inland Nationals September 28th and 29th held at Bowmoor SC

Again Louis, Rick and Victoria attended and again Louis and Rick finished 1st and 4th, however Victoria finished 7th overall and was 2nd female. What a fantastic result for Victoria; this in a fleet of 25 competitors.

Just take a look at this glorious set of results for the Combs Byte Sailors! . Combs SC Noble Marine Supernova Traveller Series Open 2019 Saturday September 20th 2019 Nine Supernova sailors from Combs participated in the event with a terrific result from all. The conditions were very difficult with a strong wind blowing at all times but with some really strong gusts that took their toll on the boats and helms. It is good to see that Eric Haselden paid us a visit and reminded us what a good sailor he is. Is there any boat that Louis can’t sail!? And as he was sailing my boat, 1029, I now know, if I ever doubted it that it’s not the boat that hinders my performance!

Toddbrook update The Toddbrook Sailing Club has moved operations to Errwood Sailing Club until Toddbrook reservoir is back in action; this is likely to be for quite a long time. However, some of the members have been using our facilities; particularly the paddle boarders. We have also been in discussions with Richard and Jane Thorpe regarding the potential of the senior and dinghy instructors to get involved in our training provision whilst their reservoir is out of operation. This would be extremely beneficial to their instructors and our club so we currently have a small group working on the detail of what is possible. The Glossop Triathlon Club used Toddbrook as a venue for their swim training and they have approached us to discuss the possibility of transferring their activity to Combs.

Page 12: 2019 September newsletter word - Combs Sailing Club...Remember that its not just about coming first on the water, there is the handicap system which benefits slower boats and also

I propose to arrange a meeting with them and someone from the Prince Albert Angling Society to consider the possibility and impact of having open water swimming on Combs Reservoir. We will need to discuss this at our AGM as we have already made a decision as a club not to have open water swimmers on the reservoir. Safety Boat protocol This is just as a reminder for all members who do a safety boat duty; either for racing or family sailing. We provide safety boat cover for the safety of sailors who may need to be rescued from the water if they are injured, ill, just plain exhausted or if their boat is damaged and can’t be sailed. The priority is the person not the boat. The boat is an object that is generally insured and can be replaced; whereas… The boat needs to be ignored and recovered at a later time when there are no other sailors on the water. If you are engaged in recovering the boat whilst others are still sailing the safety boat function no longer is present and therefore the sailors are not protected. There is an advice sheet for the safety boat duty in the rack in the club house; all safety boat drivers need to be familiar with this and read it before their duty. It is also available on the website.
