Table & Chair sets usually provide the most comfortable outdoor seating solution for dining, where individual seats for each user allows them to position themselves to their comfort. Here’s some key considerations when you’re purchasing table and chair sets:

1. Will you be using them for fine dining or for quick drinks and snacks? Fine dining requires more room on the table. As a guide, a table top of 800mm by 800mm provides the minimum room recommended for 4 persons to eat comfortably at.

2. Who will be using it? If you’re a popular venue with families, consider sets that cater for 6 persons. If you’re popular with elderly people, they appreciate chairs with arms so that they can get up more easily.

3. Teak furniture is a premium option for table & chair sets. It’s durability in all weather conditions remains unrivalled by any other timber. Like granite for worktops; it is simply the best!

4. Which type of material is the one for your outside space? Woodberry recommend: for traditional warmth and character, consider timber. For modern elegance and style, consider rattan. For easy maintenance and functionality, consider plastic, resin and aluminium.

5. One of the most common downfalls of timber chairs is their tendency to go rocky and loose. This can be overcome with the use of dowel joints, rather than screwed joints. Always look out for how chairs are constructed before you purchase.

Teak is a beautiful, closely grained hardwood used extensively to produce only the very best outdoor furniture. Here’s the 5 key reasons why teak is top.

1. Teak is naturally strong & resilient. Teak wood grows slowly causing it to be dense and closely grained and its natural oils prevent it becoming brittle.

2. Teak resists the weather like no other timber. Being full of natural oils, teak is brilliant at coping with harsh winters or scorching summers and its inherent oils stop it from absorbing water, so there’s no twisting or splitting.

3. Teak resists insect invasion. Again thanks to its inherent oils, teak performs well in deterring insects from invading.

4. Teak requires very little maintenance. Woodberry recommend that you purchase uncoated teak products and allow them to age naturally over time to a silvery-grey colour. Beware of teak oils which often lead to the growth of mildew. Refer to our tips for cleaning teak furniture on page 75.

5. Teak is great-looking. There’s no disputing it; teak looks gorgeous. When it’s new, its golden hue is irresistible, but even when it starts to fade, the stately silver-grey colour still emits a superb quality appearance.

Bench and table sets typically provide a better quality outdoor seating solution than picnic tables, and often work well for high quality food-led outlets. Here’s some key considerations when you’re purchasing bench and table sets:

1. What will you be using them for? Eating requires more room than drinking so it’s key to have a big enough table top if you are promoting great food. As a guide, a table top of 1800mm by 750mm is suitable for six persons to eat at.

2. Are you placing the furniture in a concealed garden or open roadside? Putting quality benches and tables on the roadside can pose a security risk, so consider either heavy sets or ones that can be ground fixed.

3. Are you wanting a traditional or contemporary look? Our Gabion or Discovery sets provide a more modern look than the traditional Castle sets.

4. Outdoor furniture often creates a first impression, so can draw a customer in, or turn them away. To ensure you always draw them in, consider furniture made with a heavy duty construction & fixings, that won’t break during your busiest trading periods.

WHAT WE DID

Back in the summer of 2017 Woodberry invited diners, drinkers and pub operators to come and talk to us about what they want from outdoor furniture. We ran a series of focus groups from the lovely Hare n Hounds pub in the historic town of St Albans and the feedback from these sessions was taken back to the craftsmen at our family workshop in Leamington Spa. Now knowing what customers and operators want, we built 3 pieces of fabulous furniture and accessories and installed them back at The Hare n Hounds for the public to enjoy!

Over a period of 6 weeks, we gathered further feedback from regulars and we also invited back the attendees of our focus group sessions, who provided further feedback on the furniture that had been designed – just for them!

PICNIC TABLESWHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW....

Picnic tables generally combine the table top and seats within a single unit and provide a cost-effective outdoor seating solution. Here’s some key considerations when you’re purchasing picnic tables:

1. What will you be using them for? As a rule of thumb, standard picnic benches and round picnic tables provide great drinking tables, whereas square provides that extra space for eating.

2. Who will be using it? If you’re a popular venue with families, consider benches that seat 8 persons, or allow room for pushchairs. For elderly people, consider backrests to keep them comfortable.

3. Is your ground surface hard or soft, smooth or rugged? A wide flat foot is best for really soft areas. For uneven ground, consider the 3 legged Circular 6 – it will never rock!

4. Avoid pressure treated picnic tables. Although it’s widely used to resist rot, it causes severe splitting which can be dangerous.

5. Recycled plastic is the ultimate material for long lifespan. But remember, it will often deform over time and “bow” if it’s not reinforced properly. Always check this before you buy recycled plastic, as it tends to be more costly than wood.

We tell lots of people that our Greendine Recycled Plastic Range is made from top quality, solid recycled plastic.

And that’s right. But what’s actually in it? Here’s a few interesting ingredients:

Polythene foam, bubble wrap, pallet stretch-wrap, polymer bags, pipe, wheelie bins, shampoo bottles, milk bottles, poly-tunnel sheeting, compost bags.

Sofas provide relaxation, and are ideal for pubs, hotels or holiday parks wanting to create a higher level of comfort outdoors. Here’s some key considerations when you’re purchasing sofas:

1. Who will be using them? If you’re popular with families, consider grouping sofas together to make seating for 6 persons. In contrast, elderly people will prefer armchairs, so that they can use the arms to get up.

2. Is timber or rattan better for your outside space? Woodberry recommend: for traditional warmth and character, consider timber. For modern elegance and style, consider rattan.

3. Would you like to be able to move the sofas round easily to create different combinations? If so, consider the rattan sofas, which are more lightweight so easier to move than the timber ones.

4. Are you worried about cushions getting wet? Whilst all of our sofa cushions are water-repellent, the Warwick sofas have in-built water proof cushion storage for added convenience.

PARK BENCHESWHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW....

Park benches provide a long-term, low-maintenance outdoor seating solution for public outdoor spaces. Here’s some key considerations when you’re purchasing park benches:

1. Will they be situated in an open public space or in a secluded garden? Open public spaces often require more durable, vandal-resistant benches. Refer to our strength ratings shown on page 58.

2. For additional safety and security, consider park benches that can be fixed to the ground easily with our hard or soft ground fixing kits.

3. Teak wood is a premium option for park benches. It’s durability in all weather conditions remains unrivalled by any other timber. Like granite for worktops; it is simply the best!

4. Recycled plastic is a superb material for long lifespan. However, it will often deform over time and “bow” if it’s not reinforced properly. Always check this before you buy recycled plastic park benches.

5. Avoid pressure treated park benches. Although it’s widely used to resist rot, it causes severe splitting which can be dangerous to a user.

Being a natural material, timber varies in colour and density, and shades will alter with age. Colours in this brochure are as near as modern photographic process allows and show shades of ageing and weathering. All sizes are approximate and subject to change. Recommendations for using Woodberry furnitureAll Woodberry outdoor furniture products are designed to withstand normal, reasonable social activity. Excessive misuse such as the following will render the product warranty void:

• Climbing or standing all over the furniture• Cigarette burns• Carving or hacking• Vehicle impact or scuff marks• Damage due to product being dragged over uneven

surfaces• Or any other activity deemed by Woodberry to be

unreasonable

PLEASE NOTE YOUR GUARANTEE MAY BE AFFECTED IF YOU DO NOT USE YOUR FURNITURE IN LINE WITH THE ABOVE GUIDANCE.

Cleaning for rattan furnitureIn order to maintain the attractive condition of rattan furniture we recommend cleaning once a year.

• Rinse your furniture with warm water and a non-foaming cleaner using a soft rag or sponge.

• It is important to use a non-foaming cleaner on rattan furniture, as a foaming product will leave residue in the gaps in between the weave which will then attract dirt.

• Brush the furniture clean using a hand brush or soft scrubbing pad.

• Finally, rinse the furniture off well with clean water using a garden hose and a spray attachment. Ensure the hose is on a wide spray at a distance of approx. 1m.

Tips on storing Woodberry furnitureAll Woodberry outdoor furniture products are designed to withstand being left outside all year round, with the exception of the following products:

• Parasols. Woodberry recommend that the customer always puts their parasols down at night and at any time when it is windy. Furthermore Woodberry recommends that the customer uses the weather cover provided when the parasols are kept down for 2-3 days or more. This will protect and enhance the life of your parasol. During prolonged periods of excessively cold or wet weather, it is a good idea to store your parasols under cover in a cool dry place. Do not store your parasol in warm or damp conditions as this could lead to growth of mould and mildew.

• Cushions. Whilst Woodberry employs up-to-date technology to ensure that our cushions are water-repellent, Woodberry’s cushions are not water-proof. This means that if they are subject to prolonged wet conditions (more than just a light shower) then we recommend they are allowed to dry out in a warm environment overnight. Woodberry recommend that cushions are stored under cover in a cool dry place during prolonged periods of excessively cold or wet weather. This will protect and enhance the life of your cushions. Do not store your cushions in warm, damp conditions as this could lead to growth of mould and mildew.

If the customer chooses to provide additional storage in terms of a weather covers, then this will reduce natural fade and enhance the life of your outdoor furniture, although this is not strictly necessary.

If the customer chooses to bring their outdoor furniture inside or under cover for a prolonged period of more than 2-3 days, then Woodberry strongly recommends that it is kept in a cool and well ventilated area. Keeping outdoor furniture in warm or damp conditions could lead to growth of mould and mildew.

PLEASE NOTE YOUR GUARANTEE MAY BE AFFECTED IF YOU DO NOT STORE YOUR FURNITURE IN LINE WITH THE ABOVE GUIDANCE.

Cleaning and re-treatment for softwood furniture

In order to maintain the attractive condition of softwood furniture we recommend re-treating once a year with Woodberry Brown timber treatment. Woodberry’s 5L Re-treatment kit includes all the necessary equipment to re-treat your softwood furniture, and this will cater for approximately 10 items of furniture.This is best done on a bright, dry day. Ensure the table is clean from food or drink, using a soft rag and warm soapy water.Preparation and treatment:• Scrub the surface clean using the scouring pad provided.

Lichen or mildew may be removed using a stiff brush and a weak solution of warm water and vinegar.

• Smooth out any splinters or rough areas that have appeared with the sandpaper provided.

• Sweep the area to be treated clean and remove dust using hand brush provided.

• Ensure this area is completely dry.• Read the Health & Safety data sheet.• Using gloves and eye-protection provided, apply the

treatment fluid once over with the rag, rubbing in well, along the same direction as the grain. Ensure no residual fluid remains in deep grain.

• Allow 48 hours to thoroughly dry. When dry, the furniture is safe to be used as before.

Application of any treatment, lacquer or varnish other than Woodberry Brown will render your warranty void.

Cleaning for plastic, recycled plastic or metal furniture• Firstly apply warm soapy water using a soft rag or sponge

to clean away loose dirt. • Brush the furniture clean using a hand brush or soft

scrubbing pad. • Rinse the furniture well with clean water, using a pressure

hose if required.• If stains are not removable using this method then a mild

cleaning agent may be used in place of soapy water.• Please note that recycled plastic material does have a

mottled finish. This is normal and cannot be removed.

Cleaning for teak furnitureIn order to maintain the attractive condition of teak furniture we recommend cleaning once a year.

• Choose a warm, sunny day.

• Rinse your furniture with a garden hose to release debris and dirt. Not a high pressure one as this may raise the grain of the wood and cause surface erosion.

• Take 1 Gallon of water, a quarter cup of bleach and two thirds of a cup of light laundry detergent. Then, with a stiff hand-brush remove mildew and staining using the brush in smooth strokes along the direction of the grain.

• Take the hose again and rinse the furniture thoroughly – making sure to leave no detergent on the wood. Then leave in the sun to dry.

• We strongly suggest keeping your outdoor furniture in a place where it will benefit from regular, direct sunlight as this will naturally kill mould and mildew growth.

• If you do not want the mellow, weathered, grey appearance of ageing Teak, then use a Teak Protector – this will enhance the cosmetic appearance of the teak far better than any oil ever will. This process must be repeated annually.
