Vula Viel2019 Headline Artist

Sat 14 / 7.30pm / The Round, The Dukes

Bex Burch gyilRuth Goller bassDave Smith drums

Forward-thinking UK trio Vula Viel released their second album,‘Do Not Be Afraid’ earlier in 2019, continuing their singular musicaljourney centred around the gyil (Ghanaian xylophone).

The band’s set confidently weaves sparse polyrhythms and intricaterhythm structures around bandleader Bex Burch’s gyil lines andtake the instrument’s sound into new territory. The gyil andoccasional vocal textures are underpinned by the powerful andinsistent bass of Ruth Goller (Acoustic Ladyland, Melt YourselfDown, Let Spin) and drummer Dave Smith, introducing a rough,post-punk edge to the band’s sound.

Described as “Ghanaian minimalism”, with the unassuming abilityto blur the lines between atmospheres – Vula Viel’s sound may nodto Steve Reichian jazz, but influences don’t stop there: one canhear echoes of Bill Laswell and the irresistible energy of ArthurRussell.

We are very pleased to have this band performing in the intimacyof the Round at the Dukes, this will be one not to miss.

Whether he does this byexploring certain indigenous rhythmsand traditional chord progressions orby re-arranging and re-imagining oldfolk tunes the output is a singularone and very under explored. Theend result is an intriguing andengaging set of modern jazz piecesthat are deeply rooted in Portuguesehistory and culture. The resultingsound of the band is fresh and full oforiginal ideas and the voice ofRaquel Álvaro is really quite special.

Led Bib, known for their boundarystretching rock and jazz, that garneredthem a Mercury Prize nomination and afistful of prestigious awards, set off lastyear in the hull of a boat in east London, together with lyricists and songwriters tocreate a suite of songs. Emerging fromtheir underwater session, elements oftheir groovy, heavy, improvised soundremained but they were now set againstfragile vocals and poignant lyrics, takingthem into a much gentler song world. The result of the session, is called 'It'sMorning' and comes out in September. Inthe spirit of a classic LP it features twosections of music and at this concert theband will perform and expand upon thealbum. The music is very much a journeyfrom start to finish and this will be fullyreflected in the live show.

Led Bib have been together for 15 yearsand have released nine albums to hugecritical acclaim. This album promises tobring them to new heights with its mix ofthe classic 'Led Bib' sound and this newbroadening into the world of songs.
