Catering Policies and Procedures


GENERAL INFORMATIONPicnics are scheduled using designated food service times between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. or between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7p.m. Deviations from these time frames are subject to approval and will incur additional fees. All menus are served buffet style with disposable service ware and include all-you can drink beverages during the 2 hour time frame.

ADMISSIONS/TICKETINGIn order to utilize Catering Facilities at the San Diego Zoo or the Safari Park, an Admissions component per attendee is required. This admissions component is already included in the Picnic Package Pricing. San Diego Zoo Global Membership or Military status does not apply to Special Events. Tickets and wristbands will be sent in advance to client for distribution. Requests for advance tickets are subject to five (5) business days for processing and 3-5 business days for shipping. Client is to return any unused tickets and/or wristbands to the coordinator on event day. Missing tickets/wristbands are subject to additional charges. 2nd day return ticket expires 30 days after the date of the picnic. Guests must hold onto their 1-day Pass to use their 2nd day return pass to our sister location (San Diego Zoo or San Diego Zoo Safari Park). The 1-day Pass must be scanned at the turnstiles on the day of the picnic to be valid when returning for the 2nd day at our sister location. $10 off new annual memberships for adults or children on the day of your event. Not applicable with discounted or evening admissions.

FOOD and BEVERAGE MINIMUMSEach facility has a food and beverage minimum expenditure requirement. Food and beverage minimums are met by picnic package price along with any other food and beverage related purchase. Rentals, labor fees, taxes, animal presentations or other non-food and beverage charges do not apply toward the minimum. If the minimum is not met, the difference will be charged to the Client. The minimum for each venue varies in amount, and is outlined in the Picnic Package and/or in the Sales Agreement. Any deviations and/or reductions in the scheduled program will not alter the Client’s responsibility for full payment of this minimum. Rentals, taxes, labor fees, animal presentations or other non-food and beverage charges do not apply toward the minimum.

FOOD SERVICEAll meals will be prepared and served by San Diego Zoo Global. Menu selections must be made no later than three weeks before the event date. Actual menu breakdowns number of adults and number of children (age 3-11), are required at time of final guarantee. If menus are not selected by the due date, the Society reserves the right to select a default menu. Food orders must be equal to the guaranteed number of guests.

For Buffet Meals: One buffet table (double sided) will be set up for each 100 guests as space allows.

FOOD SERVICE TIMESDesignated food service time is as follows:2 hour maximum (80-3000 guests)

Additional service time is available at $1.00 per person for food and $1.00 per person for drink service, per hour or part thereof, based on guarantee.

BEVERAGE SERVICEAll beverage service will be provided by the Society and is subject to the regulations of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board of California. San Diego Zoo Global reserves the right to refuse service to anyone. Consumption of all alcoholic beverages will be confined to the event area during public operation hours.

DEPOSIT SCHEDULEAn initial non-refundable deposit is required at the time the Sales Agreement is signed in order to consider the reservation confirmed. If deposit is less than fifty percent of the total projected bill, payment will be due no later than thirty (30) days prior to the event. The remaining balance will be due in full five (5) business days prior to the event.


Catering Policies and Procedures - Continued

GUARANTEE The Client must notify the Events Coordinator of the final guarantee no later than 10:00 a.m. (P.S.T.) five (5) business days prior to the Event. This number shall constitute a guarantee and is not subject to reduction. A head count of children and adults is due at this time. If the final guarantee is not received within the five (5) day specification, the estimated attendance given at contract will be used as the final billable guarantee. The client will be invoiced for the final guaranteed attendance or the actual number of meals served, whichever is greater.

DECORATIONS/THEMING/ENTERTAINMENTAll decorations, theming and entertainment must be approved by the Event Coordinator at least fourteen (14) days prior to the event. The Society reserves the right to refuse any decoration, theming or entertainment that may be considered a health or safety problem for the animals or cause damage to Society property.

For the safety of our guests and animal collection, items not allowed on ZSSD grounds include but are not limited to: non ZSSD provided alcoholic beverages, any animals other than service animals, balloons, balls, Frisbees, hacky sacks, hula hoops, bicycles, scooters, tricycles, riding toys of any kind, bug nets, plastic bug keeper containers, cap guns, noisemakers, toys that make loud noises, fireworks, glass bottles, jump ropes, knives, weapons, lawn chairs, plants, roller blades, skates, skateboards, roller shoes, throw away lids and straws, AM/FM radios, scanners, portable TVs, laser pointers, whistles, yo-yos and guests in costume.

VENUEIn venues where seating exists, the revenue minimum for these areas includes the existing tables and chairs as arranged. In certain venues, tables may be moved for an additional charge.All power requirements must be on file in the Coordinator’s office prior to event date. Extensive power needs are subject to additional charges.

Outdoor venues, or all other venue arrangements, green ware is included. China, glassware and flatware may be available for rent at an additional cost per person.

Events at the Zoo or Safari Park will not have exclusive use of the Premises unless agreed to contractually. Event attendees are restricted to contracted Venue after Zoo/Park operating hours. The San Diego Zoo and San Diego Safari Park will make every effort to avoid any conflicts when there is more than one group on the grounds at the same time.

Inclement weather options are available for an additional cost and are not included in minimum charges. Outdoor venues have basic lighting. Thematic lighting is available at an additional charge.Entertainment, buffets and presentation requirements will affect capacities.The San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are non-smoking facilities.

SAFARI PARK TOURSTour pricing available only in conjunction with a private catered event. Alternate routes can be arranged for guests with mobility impairments. Arrangements must be made in advance.
