11:45 am Sounds of the New Year* - ClassroomDelight in the classical sounds of the pipa 琵琶 and erhu 二胡 performed by the acclaimed musicians behind GONG MUSIC. This talented duo will play a mix of old favorites & modern twists. Learn the traditions & significance of some of the oldest instruments, and discover their new meaning together!

Whirling, Twirling Ribbons: A Ribbon Dance Workshop* - ClassroomWatch an elegant ribbon dance by dancer and choreographer Mei-Yin Ng, then craft a simple ribbon of your own and learn how to make it twirl through the air!

Legends Storytime - Under the Lion CostumeItching to hear how the pig got its place in the Zodiac? Join a MOCA educator for the tale of the Great Zodiac Race. Stick around for a spooky retelling of the Legend of Nian, another New Year’s classic.

Let’s Get Loud! FirecrackersTurn ordinary household items into festive rattle drums that you can use to scare away the legendary Nian monster. Put your customized noisemakers to good use during our legends story time.

Ham it Up! Pig AccessoriesGo hog wild with a Year of the Pig craft! Create your own wearable pig snout using simple materials.

Nian Monster Mash-UpLegend has it that the Nian monster emerges the night before every new year to frighten villagers and devour their food. But what does Nian look like? Some say Nian has the head of a lion and the body of a bull. Others say Nian is a giant sea beast. Assemble a mixed-media collage or mask to show off your version of the Nian monster!

Visitors who purchase tickets online, in advance, get first access to performance tickets until tickets run out. Entry to performances is not guaranteed, even with advance online purchase of tickets. Performance tickets are distributed upon entry to the Festival. Visitors who purchase tickets on the day of the festival will be put on the waitlist for performances.
