2019 Esperança
Global Impact Report
Providing hope and improving health through disease prevention, education and treatment. Esperança’s mission is bold, and one that we have been delivering for 50 years!
We have seen hopelessness in the eyes of our brothers and sisters on this planet. The feeling that nothing about their current circumstance will change. “Tomorrow I will wake up just as poor, hungry or sick as I am today.” But then comes Esperança – hope!
Hope looks different in each community we serve, but the feeling is the same.
With the installation of a water system in a Nicaraguan community, a mother no longer walks three miles to collect dirty, contaminated water that makes her family suffer from chronic diarrhea. Agricultural and animal husbandry projects in Mozambique increase food availability to a child suffering from malnutrition. In Peru, a volunteer surgical team provided cataract surgeries that restored sight to a woman who then saw the face of her grandson for the first time. And in Phoenix, Arizona, a mom learns how to cook her favorite Mexican dishes in a healthier way, reducing the likelihood that her family members will become part of the 40% more likely to die from diabetes. A simple improvement in one aspect of life sparks hope for a different more fulfilling future.
In this Global Impact Report, you will read about Esperança’s work in Peru, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Bolivia, Mozambique and Phoenix in the areas of community development, surgical missions and health education, and most importantly, the
results of that work. You will see that we are a fiscally sound and healthy organization with a modest operating budget. What you won’t see but should know is that we also have over $3 million in an endowment fund – responsibly securing our mission to transform communities far into the future.
You will see the names of individual donors and organizations who have supported us in a significant way this past year, and one couple in particular, Judy and Bob Wargel, who have left a lasting legacy through a very generous planned gift. We are so very grateful to all of you who have supported Esperança through annual gifts, planned gifts, multi-year giving in the Circle of Hope, special project funding, program grants and corporate gifts and volunteering which have made the delivery of our mission possible.
We also want to take this opportunity to thank our Board of Directors who contribute their time, talent and treasure to the success of Esperança, along with the staff who work tirelessly with commitment and tenacity to bring hope and improve health for every life we touch.
We celebrate not only the 50 years of Esperança, but all the shoulders we stand on that have brought us to this point, and we look forward to another 50 years and beyond!
With sincere thanks,
Jeri Royce Martin L. Johnson, M.D., M.P.H. President & CEO Board Chair
PROVIDING HOPE AND IMPROVING HEALTH
ABOUT US
VALUES
We live and demonstrate these core values in all we do:
Compassion We treat everyone with nonjudgmental care and sensitivity, honoring their unique life experiences and conditions.
Cultural Awareness Cultural awareness goes beyond a simple understanding of another’s culture and belief. It encompasses being aware of one’s own world view, recognizing positive attitudes toward cultural differences, and demonstrating genuine respect for other’s lived experiences.
Integrity Our programs are aligned with the needs of a community, not a predetermined set of solutions.
Tenacity We are committed to serving our communities regardless of uncertainty or adversity.
HISTORY Founded in 1970, Esperança was built on the dream of providing the opportunity for families in the poorest regions of the world to live healthy lives. Today, we continue that legacy by working with in-country partners to define the needs of their community, and help them take steps to reach self-sufficiency. These programs and services were built on philanthropy and continue to thrive today with the support of our community.

JUDY AND BOB WARGEL understood the importance of philanthropy in making lasting societal change. As long-time supporters of Esperança, they saw firsthand the difference a single well can make on an entire community, the empowerment a pig farm can give a women’s co-op, and the sheer number of lives that can be impacted by the charity of another. We honor the memory of Bob and Judy by continuing to improve quality of life for the world’s most vulnerable.
