With Martin Luther King (MLK) Day in January and February as Black History Month, the NY/NJ Affiliate kicked off 2019 with a focus on honoring black culture. Their first event of the year was an MLK Day of Service, held at William Dickinson High School in Jersey City. A group of roughly 15 black actuaries gathered on their day off to give to back to the local community. The school was looking to add some color to brighten up their primarily white and beige walls. To help in this initiative, IABA members painted four different murals throughout the school with hopes that the murals will boost school spirit as students head to class.

A month after the MLK Day of Service, the NY/NJ Affiliate hosted a social event titled Blactuary Feud. Held on the last Friday of Black History Month, four teams competed in a Jeopardy-style game, where the questions focused on recent Black history over the past decade. The event was a huge success as over 25 attendees were able to learn a bit more about their history, fill their stomachs with soul food, have some drinks, and get a few rounds of bowling in before the game began. The drinks may explain one team’s answer of Nancy Pelosi to the following question, “This American politician currently serves as U.S. Representative for California’s 43rd district. She has been a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 1991 and recently went viral for, ‘Reclaiming my time.’”

If interested in being a part of the NY/NJ Affiliate, email [email protected] to be added to the listserv.

Every year, The Florida State University (FSU) IABA affiliate coordinates outreach events with local high schools to introduce their students to actuarial science as a potential career path.

On February 22nd, Co-Ambassadors Kenneth Ukah and Jasmine Harris, and FSU Coordinator of Actuarial Science Steve Paris, attended Amos P. Godby High School to discuss becoming an actuary and IABA’s origin and mission to a group of around fifty students taking advanced math classes.

Below are some fun facts from the Membership Committee on the year 2018.

IABA has experienced growth in paid member counts over the past five years fueled by a high percentage of college members.

Challenging fact is that we get a lot of new (college) members each year (usually driven by the Scholarship and Boot Camp application process), but we also have a low renewal rate. This is one challenge the Membership committee is looking to start tackling this year.
