The South African Fresh Produce Exporters’ Forum (FPEF) is pleased to present the 2019 edition of the Fresh Produce Export Directory. This unique directory is published annually as a service to and a source of information for the international fresh produce trading community.

The FPEF is a voluntary, non-profit organisation with more than 130 members. FPEF members consist of fresh produce exporters, producer-exporters, pack houses, logistics and other service providers.

Information regarding FPEF members is updated regularly on the FPEF website: www.fpef.co.za

The FPEF Export Directory contains comprehensive information about South African fresh fruit and vegetable exports, including the contact details of FPEF members. It showcases fruit varieties and provides the latest statistics about

fresh fruit and vegetable export volumes, export periods, as well as the various export destinations of South African fresh fruit and vegetables.

We trust that the information contained in this edition of the Export Directory will be of value to you in your trade relations with the South African fresh produce export industry.

overview of south africa

South Africa is a country located at the southernmost tip of Africa. With more than 50 million inhabitants of varying cultures, origins and languages; it is a country rich in opportunity. The country is surrounded by almost 3000 kilometres of coastline, and bordered in the north by Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique and Namibia. South Africa’s prominent harbours include Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban.

South Africa’s winter season falls between May and August, whereas summer begins mid-October and lasts until the end of February. Summers are characterised by long, hot and sunny days; often with afternoon thunderstorms in the central and northern regions of the country. The coastal areas experience less adverse weather conditions and are prone to more stable environments.

Widely regarded as an emerging market, South Africa has a well-established and highly functional financial system, which is backed by the South African Reserve Bank. The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR), which offers visitors and investors great value for money.

Following the first democratic elections in 1994, the deregulation of the fruit industry in 1997 paved the way for free market fresh fruit trade between South Africa and the rest of the world.

Today, fresh fruit accounts for approximately 50% of South African agricultural exports. Globally, South Africa is the second largest exporter of citrus fruit. Along with citrus, other fruit exports include pome fruit, stone fruit, table grapes, subtropicalfruit and exotic fruit; exported to 111 destination countries. Vegetables are also exported from South Africa. The economic value generated from these exports is in excess of $2.5 billion.

In addition, South Africa is the largest fresh fruit exporter (by volume) in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Fresh Produce Exporters’ Forum (FPEF) is a voluntary, non-profit

organisation with more than 130 members, accounting for about 90%

of fresh fruit exported from South Africa. The FPEF is also a member of

Fruit South Africa, together with the country’s main growers’ associations.

This position strengthens the FPEF’s role of providing leadership and

services to its members, the international buying community and the fresh

produce export industry as a whole.

FPEF members consist of fruit and vegetable exporters, producer-exporters,

export and marketing agents, pack houses, logistics and other service

providers. Whilst membership is voluntary and open to all South African

fresh produce exporting companies and industry service providers, strict

accreditation criteria and a Code of Conduct apply to ensure that only

competent and reliable marketing agents and grower-exporters are admitted

to the Forum.

The neutral and representative status of the FPEF enables it to raise funds

for the export industry to ensure attendance of major international trade

fairs like Fruit Logistica Berlin and Asia Fruit Logistica, during which an

Export Directory is distributed. Essentially a service organisation, some

of the FPEF’s services include generic promotions for new and existing

markets, the distribution of information to members, and the publication

of a series of trade chain manuals.

The FPEF also manages a number of projects for the benefit of the

industry, such as the Post-Harvest Innovation (PHI) Programme and

transformation initiatives, including the Graduate Internship programme

as well as the Top of the Class (TOC) and Leadership and Mentorship

(L&M) training programmes.

As the official Fresh Produce Export Council in South Africa, the FPEF provides

a pivotal link between Government and the industry regarding market

access and related matters. More than anything, the FPEF intends to

create value for its members to help ensure a profitable, sustainable and

globally competitive fresh produce export industry.
