Perk Up ParksFocusing on improving City parks and play-areas to strengthen our community and the overall quality of life. One of the most exceptional charac-teristics of Winter Springs is our green spaces and City parks. In January 2016, the City Commission approved a master plan to upgrade playground equipment that would grow to be the Perks up Parks Initiative. This initiative aims to provide quality community assets to Winter Springs residents by perking up our city parks with upgraded playground equip-ment, beautiful landscaping, and more!

A notable project of this ini-tative was the Pamela A. Carroll Memorial Pavilion at Trotwood Park. The pavil-ion is dedicated to the late Commissioner Pam Carroll who passed away in Febru-ary 2018. The construction of the structure concluded in March but will include final touches such as a stone pier overlooking the pond and

rocky-mountain landscaping to complement the log pavilion. The goal for this project is to develop a new venue that will host family, corporate, and community functions while overlooking the beautiful Trotwood pond.Another project that was finished in September 2019 was the Field of Dreams Playground at Central Winds Park. This sports-themed playground consists of three play areas: an inclusive tot play-ground with equip-ment designed for ages 2 to 5 years old, the main playground with equipment de-signed for ages 5 to 12 years old, and a swing set area that is friendly to both age ranges.Be on the lookout for more exciting projects on the way in Trotwood Park and Torcaso Park. The mission of the Perks up Perks Initiative to strengthen our community and the quality of life aligns with the City Commission’s values, as well as the City’s belief in the impor-tance of play.

Community Spotlight

The City’s award-winning therapy pool has an incredible group of ded-icated aquatic instructors. All of the instructors are 55 years or older and have been members of the pool be-fore they even began teaching. The instructors regularly take time to ed-ucate themselves and research the best exercises for their class. They work hard to put together their own exercise routines to make sure the senior’s needs are met.

To keep up with the Therapy Pool’s active schedule, all of the instructors volunteer to teach at least two class-es a week. Some of the instructors have been teaching at the therapy pool for more than ten years! Diane Oliver, a resident of Winter Springs,

and Linda Pagden, a resident of San-ford, are two instructors who began volunteering shortly after the pool opened 11 years ago.

Although the teachers put in a lot of hard work, they also enjoy the social aspects of the classes. The instruc-tors encourage socializing by orga-nizing quarterly potlucks with Win-ter Springs Aquatic Specialist, Dell Walker.

These instructors demonstrate their care for members by welcoming newcomers, encouraging strong re-lationships, and sharing their skills to help members stay healthy and active! Overall, they love volunteering at the City and making a difference in the lives of our senior community!
