For nearly four decades Maitland-Smith has been in the business of creating

exquisite and unique decorative accessories, lighting and accent furniture and

elegant mirrors from our La Barge Collection.

Founded by a London antique dealer with the eye of a connoisseur,

Maitland-Smith has carried on the tradition of creating stunning accents

for the home of the highest quality and breathtaking execution.

From the beginning, our many workrooms have been artisan based

and employ time-honored techniques developed before the machine age.

Many of these skills date back to the world’s earliest civilizations,

and are associated with fine quality furniture and decorative arts.

Maitland-Smith is well-known for many hand-crafted specialties,

including hand carved tropical mahogany, hand cut and inlaid exotic wood veneers,

lost wax cast metal mounts and decorative objects, as well as, traditional vegetable

tanned and hand-tooled leather. Other areas of expertise include finely executed

porcelains, sophisticated finishing techniques, and detailed hand painting. We draw

inspiration from great works from the 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

Our artisans continue the skills of the 17th and 18th century’s ateliers. Hand painting is undeniably among these traditional crafts.

Unlike machine aided copies or replicas, original work like hand painting is regarded as a unique expression of an artisan and of greater value.

The talented artisans in our ateliers possess the painting skills of their 18th–century counterparts. Attributes like attention to detail and eye-hand coordination are key.

Technical virtuosity is the personal signature of the artist. An expertly handled brush can make techniques like dry-brushing, color blending

Among the most versatile of materials used in the decorative arts is metal. Prized for its durability and variety of forms, metal can be worked in a number of fascinating ways, thereby increasing its decorative applications.

Embossing metal dates to its earliest use and is part of the technique of hammering. It is the ability to press metal out of shape without breaking or cracking. Embossing is hammering metal from the back side in order to raise a controlled decoration on the front.

Termed “repousse” by the French, all embossing is hand worked by our trained craftsmen.

METAL WORKING

HAND PAINTING

From its inception, the technique of lost wax casting has remained the preferred process of jewelers, sculptors and artisans. The process was developed by the Greeks and Romans and has remained in use since its beginning. The many-step technique begins with a finely carved wax model. This wax model is then surrounded by a special form of concrete which is extremely fine in consistency. This allows the concrete to capture all the detail of the original wax version.

As the concrete dries, two different holes are carved into the material to facilitate casting. The mold is then allowed to harden and cure.

The concrete mold is then filled with molten metal, which in turn melts the original wax model which drains away using a narrow exit hole. When the mold cools, it is broken open to reveal a finely cast metal object which was once wax. It is at this point a hand applied finish is added. Among our most popular

Maitland-Smith strives for authenticity in our use of materials. Fine leather, hand colored and tooled has long been a material of choice for desks and library tables, as well as card and game tables. Favored for its durability and ease of replacement when damaged, leather is an integral part of furniture making.

We process our leather using the same materials and techniques favored by master cabinetmakers of the 18th century. Processing leather involves a long, multi-step procedure but some of the most important features are captured in the final steps with hand tooling or embossing.

Originally created by the Bookbinders Guild to apply titles and decorations to their leather volumes, the skills were soon adopted by furniture makers. By using heated brass wheels with incised designs on the edge, artisans can roll the wheel (held by a handle) across the leather and permanently emboss a leather with a decoration.

The resulting depressions are called blind tooling. When a more noticeable design is required, gold or silver leaf is placed on the leather and the heated tool is used to emboss the leather and transfer the gold or silver leaf to the impressions.

LEATHER

Perhaps the most demanding skill in the rich tradition of craftsmanship is hand carving. Archeologists can date early surviving examples over three thousand years old. Fantastic wooden objects have been uncovered in Egyptian tombs alongside jewel encrusted gold and silver artifacts. Other examples date from the Middle Ages, primarily ecclesiastical figures.

The Renaissance was the setting for the reawakening of the decorative arts. Specialized guilds of artisans were formed to advance and protect particular skills. Carvers guilds arose throughout Europe alongside goldsmiths, jewelers and other similar trades.

The richly ornamental styles of the 17th and 18th centuries are a testament to the caliber of craftsmanship available. Our carvers use the same tools and techniques as their 18th-century counterparts. After years of training, their skills are applied to a wide variety of Maitland-Smith items. Examples include our hand carved mahogany dining chairs, occasional chairs, mirror frames and numerous decorative objects.

HAND CARVED WOOD

As highly regarded traditional furniture crafts, these handcrafted inlay processes began in Germany and Holland.

In the hands of a trained artisan, shaped veneered wood or other suitable material is applied to a furniture frame, forming a mosaic-like pattern or image on the surface.

Marquetry may be floral, or an arabesque, but it must be curvilinear. If the pattern is geometric, it is called parquetry. Both are traditional decorative techniques which add intrinsic value to fine furniture. By the 17th century marquetry in particular reached new heights of skill and innovation, and was prized by patrons of the era. The use of the process was further advanced by the importation of rare and exotic woods from around the world, unique to Western Europe.

The high quality of our hand sewn lamp shades reflects our company’s mission – that of providing our customers with the very best materials and workmanship possible. Since we make our own shades, we control the quality from start to finish.

All hand sewn shades begin with a custom made welded wire frame. This frame or armature determines the shape and size of the shade. The frame is then hand wrapped with a fine muslin ribbon. It is to this fabric covered frame that our skilled hand sewers stitch the outer fabric and inner lining. Dressmaker details including hand-set pleating, smocking and embroidery are determined by the designer. Final steps include the addition of trim at the top and bottom, such as folds, gimps and other custom details.

The use of exotic seashells has a long history in the decorative arts. Many have strong visual appeal, are durable and can be cut and polished.

The shell’s durability lends itself to veneered surfaces and inlaid accents. The wide variety of types available provides a stimulus to creativity and innovation.

At Maitland-Smith we use a variety of shells in traditional and innovative ways. As a complete veneer covering an entire object, either solid or fashioned into patterns, it is labor-intensive with each piece cut, fitted and hand polished. Our artisans have over 30 years experience working with exotic shells and related skills.

As a design leader, Maitland-Smith was the first to offer young penshell as a translucent material for lamp shades and other lighting forms. We developed a method of inlaying translucent young crackled penshell onto molded fiberglass forms creating a new use for a beautiful natural material.

Donald Bustraan brings a fresh transitional aesthetic to Maitland-Smith with over 25 years experience working with some of the top talents in Home Furnishings including Sally Sirkin Lewis of J. Robert Scott, Rose Tarlow, Ralph Lauren Home, Barbara Barry,David Easton, as well as many other furniture brands. Donald studied at the Slade School of Art at London University, Dean’sList in Fine Art at Michigan State, and is a degreed furniture designer from Kendall College of Design. A recent transfer from Los Angeles, with an extensive background in the arts, Donald has the ability to develop applied art with both sculptural and visual aspects in mind. He has a unique talent for working with mixed media, unique and updated finishes, faux surfaces, mass, scale, line, space, and contrast. His extensive collection includes curated designs wood products, upholstery and decorative accessories, His collection is an updated mix of such varied time periods including Deco, Mid-Century and Pre-Colombian with a special nod to French artists.

Susan Hable Smith and sister Katherine Hable Sweeney founded textile company, Hable Construction, in 1999 and named it after their great-grandfather’s 20th century road construction business. Merging their expertise and talents—Susan is the artist, Katherine a born sales professional who has worked with Kate Spade and Polo Ralph Lauren—the Hable sisters are leaders in 21st century textile design. For nearly 20 years, Hable Construction continues to grow and today produces fabric and rug lines, home storage products, and a furniture collection for Hickory Chair. Susan’s paintings not only inspire textile designs but are available through fine retailers and studios. Her textiles are woven or printed in North Carolina. She is the author of A Colorful Home.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

BRASS: Brass is an alloy (mixture of two or more metals) of copper and zinc, with a greater percentage of copper than zinc. The combination gives this metal alloy its golden color. Like its sister metal, bronze, it can be cast, hammered, engraved, and embossed to form a variety of shapes and textures. Its particular composition makes it extremely flexible, enabling it to be formed into thin sheets.

CAST GESSO: Gesso is the Italian word for “board chalk” and is a powdered form of the mineral calcium carbonate. It is used to create a surface for painting. The process, like all casting methods, requires a mold, which must be created from an original three-dimensional model. Once the mold is ready, the gesso mixed with glue is poured into the mold and allowed to set. After removal from the mold, the casting is cleaned of mold marks and is ready for finishing.

LEATHER: All leathers are hand-laid and trimmed, and then undergo a lengthy, many-step process of coloring and hand-padding to bring out the natural character of the leather. After coloring and antiquing, it is ready for hand-tooling and applied decoration. Tooling, whether blind or gold, enhances the surface appeal of the leather. The leather is finished with the finest lacquer, which imparts protection on its surface.

VENETIAN GLASS MIRROR: Developed by Venetian artists, this decorative, combination of cut, beveled and engraved mirror sections used to decorate looking glasses, furniture and interiors dates to the 17th century. Like their Italian counterparts, our mirrors are hand made in the traditional manner.

VERRE EGLOMISE: This is the French term for “gold glass” and is derived from the name of a Parisian frame maker of the 18th century, Jean Baptiste Glomy, who adopted the process for decorating the mounts of glass paintings. The technique of painting on the back or reverse side of the glass from the viewer requires an understanding of how the final work will be seen as well as an adjustment of the traditional method of laying down paint or lacquer.

WROUGHT IRON: Our wrought iron furniture and mirrors and made by hand in the traditional manner using a forge and various blacksmith tools. Each unique piece begins its life in the forge where it is heated to a red-hot state, then hammered, bent, twisted and cut while hot. Then it is welded together to form the desired shape.

� K9 Optical Crystal is extremely hard and clear. This permits specialized polishing to produce a surface that transmits light with little or no distortion, which sparkles with diamond-like brilliance when cut into facets. Its precise optic effects, developed for the scientific requirements of lens makers, also make it the finest engravable surface for artistic impression. Optical crystal pieces also have the distinction of being lead free, and are available in a variety of solid forms.

Products in the Maitland-Smith line are handcrafted by skilled artisans and finished from the highest quality materials such as wood, stone, veneer, glass, brass and iron.
