College Nine
International and Global Perspectives
College Nine opened in Fall 2000, welcoming our first class of upper-division students. We were the first college to be built at UCSC in almost 30 years. College Nine and its sister college, College Ten (founded in 2002), are the only colleges affiliated with an academic division - the Division of Social Sciences.
College Nine offers a range of elective classes, such as the Global Issues colloquium, the Global Action workshop, and an Intercultural Communication class. In addition, we have developed a unique Pathway to Distinction award, which recognizes students for successfully completing three quarters of relevent activities. These may be in the area of language and culture or research and scholarship. Recipients of this award are recognized at graduation with the College Nine Distinction.
College Nine has worked hard to develop a strong community and to engage students with programs related to our theme of International and Global Perspectives. College Nine benefits from shared resources and partnerships with research centers such as the Everett Program; the Blum Center for Poverty, Social Enterprise, and Participatory Governance; and the Chicano Latino Research Center. We encourage our students to study abroad. Our students have the opportunity to live at our International Living Center and iFloor: intentional interculturally-minded communities that mix international and domestic students. Additionally, through a wide range of activities such as the Practical Activism Conference, Intercultural Community Weekend, peer instructor opportunities, and a myriad of events including debates and teach-ins on current issues, College Nine students are able to explore our theme and develop dynamic leadership skills. The International and Global Perspectives Leadership Certificate, received by some students at graduation, indicates a deep and sustained level of involvement and engagement with these programs and our college’s theme.
As UCSC celebrates its 54th anniversary this year, College Nine strives to provide even more enriching opportunities for students to increase their understanding of peoples and cultures around the globe, explore the world of possibilities, and better understand the interconnections and collective endeavors that shape our society.

The Academic Attire The formal attire worn by the graduates, faculty, and officers of the university on the occasion of these commencement exercises has historic roots in medieval Europe. Dressed in cap and gown, the graduates and their professors form part of a long-standing tradition that dates to Paris and Bologna, to Oxford and Cambridge. The precise origins of the several parts of the academic garb are not clear. However, as medieval students enjoyed the status of clerics during their university years, one is hardly wrong in asserting their attire found its inspiration in the clerical dress of medieval Europe. The gown seems to be an adaptation of the robe of a friar or priest; the hood, of the monk’s or friar’s cowl; and the mortarboard cap of today, the end-product of curious evolution, recalls the skull cap of days when tonsured heads needed protection against the drafts of medieval classrooms. Academic attire began to appear quite generally on United States campuses in the late 1800s. Since that time, its use has become universal for solemn university functions and its pattern highly uniform.
The Gown The gowns are three in number and styling. That of the bachelor is a yoked, closed-front garment with long, pointed sleeves; that of the master is cut to be worn open-front, with long, closed sleeves and slits cut just above the elbow to allow the forearm to protrude; the gown of the doctor is also worn open and has full bell-shaped sleeves. Only the doctor’s gown is trimmed—with velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve. Though black velvet is proper trim for all doctor gowns, the color and material of the panels and sleeve bars is often varied in order to indicate the faculty who granted the wearer’s degree: dark blue for Philosophy (PhD), light blue for Education (EdD), white for the Arts and Letters (LittD), gold-yellow for Sciences (SCD), orange for Engineering (EngD, DCE), purple for Law (LL D, DCL, JD, JUD, JCD), green for Medicine (MD), scarlet for Theology (STD, DD).
The Hood The hood at first seems to have been worn over the head and was attached to the gown. When the skull cap was introduced, the hood was retained but detached and worn much as it is today. In the United States, hoods are generally reserved for master and doctoral degrees, although each degree may have a right to a hood. The color or colors with which the hood is lined are those of the college or university that granted the wearer’s degree. For example, the University of California is known by the gold chevron on the field of royal blue. The colored velvet binding or edging of the hood is a key to the faculty granting the degree. The colors follow the same schedule indicated above for the panels of the doctor’s gown.
The Cap The mortarboard has become the universally accepted style in United States colleges and universities. Many European institutions still retain distinctive forms of academic headdress - for example, the University of London’s distinctive tam-o-shanter cap. The doctor, following commencement, has the right to wear a gold tassel on the mortarboard; black, however, is perfectly proper and perhaps more common.
