The 15th annual Golf Classic was renamed The Dan W. Hogan Golf Classic in honor of our beloved Board Member and Chief Operating Executive Officer for CapStar Bank who passed in November of 2018. The event, presented by Nissan, was a huge success and took place at The Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs. More than 30 teams participated raising $185,000 in support of the agency and families we serve. The 2020 event is scheduled for May 18.

We were so thankful to have former President and Mrs. Carter, along with Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks, in our community during October for the 36th Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. The Carters have inspired generations on what it means to give back and to serve others.

Nashville is growing at an unprecedented rate. So many good things have come from this, but with that growth, we as a community are also facing new challenges. The availability of affordable housing for the working men and women in our community is one of those challenges.

Nashville has been listed among the top five U.S. cities on the verge of a housing crisis:• Home prices having risen 74 percent since 2012.• During this same period, Nashville has lost over 20 percent of its

affordable housing.• It is projected that Nashville will need an additional 30,000

affordable housing units by 2026.

But Nashville has a history of coming together to find solutions to the challenges we have faced.

Our hope is the Carter Work Project was not only about hundreds of volunteers coming together to help 59 families reach their dream of homeownership, but that the week will be remembered as the catalyst for our community to bring increased focus on addressing this growing need.

I believe the pictures in this report of the hundreds of volunteers, led by two of our country’s greatest humanitarians, will be remembered by future generations as a pivotal moment when the community started a movement to change the direction of housing. The goal is to create housing both affordable and available to the working men and women who are needed in this city to continue our growth and maintain our quality of life.

In doing that, we all will have helped fulfill Habitat for Humanity’s mission of putting God’s love into action, bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

This is Nashville’s time. As demonstrated daily at Habitat for Humanity and during the Carter Work Project week, we can and will come together and be unified in making this a better community with a brighter future for all Nashvillians.

The weeklong 2019 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project launched into full swing before a packed house at the Ryman Auditorium on Sunday night, Oct. 6, 2019, with an all-star opening ceremony showcasing highlights of Music City, USA. Lively performances by members of the Nashville Symphony, Melinda D o o l i t t l e , N a s h v i l l e’s s e s s i o n musicians, including Wanda Vick on fiddle, and the Fisk Jubilee Singers were followed by heartfelt remarks from former President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter about the need for affordable shelter and Habitat for Humanity’s worldwide

impact. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Nashville Mayor John Cooper, Habitat for Humanity International Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Reckford, and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville President and CEO Danny Herron each echoed the Carters’ message, sharing their own outlooks for the week ahead. Future homeowner Tara Morgan, who built with the Carters throughout the week, shared her life story and homeownership journey with the crowd. Long-time Habitat supporters and Nashville residents Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood were also on hand, performing for an enthusiastic

crowd as the night drew to a close with everyone singing “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”

The energy of the Opening Ceremony carried over to the build site throughout the week, with 21 homes built for hardworking families. Under beautiful October skies, President and Mrs. Carter and Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood worked alongside approximate ly 1500 vo lunteers , bu i ld ing homes , communit ies , and hope. A total of 59 Nashville families will become homeowners (continued on page 14)

In the Spring of 2019, WME sponsored their first full home for Habitat homeowner Delaina Young. “Working with Habitat for Humanity not only brought us together as a company, but also a community. Over a hundred volunteers from our office worked alongside friends and colleagues from across the music industry to transform what was once just a concrete slab into a beautiful home. It’s been a privilege to spend each build day working with Delaina—we are proud to be a small part of her family’s story,” says Jay Williams, partner and co-head, WME Nashville.

Faith has always been a component of the Habitat model of homeownership. Habitat complies with fair housing laws and does not discriminate because of race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status or national origin.

One of the longest standing Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville sponsors, Westminster Presbyterian Church, built its 25th home in the fall of 2018 in Park Preserve. “Westminster Presbyterian Church has been a faithful and joyful partner to Habitat for Humanity’s misson to help hard-working families purchase homes,” says Mike Allen, director of faith relations. “We have looked forward every year to the unique spirit and smiles of this wonderful group.”

Homeowner Services

Hardworking HomeownersHabitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville’s homeowners work hard for the opportunity to purchase a home with a 0% APR mortgage. In addition to 100 hours of homeownership classes and 100 hours working on the build site with sponsors and volunteers, Habitat homeowners work in a multitude of industries to support themselves and their families. They represent a cross section of demographics from single parent households, to two parent households, to immigrants, to retirees who are all in search of more stability for their lives and their families’ lives. Habitat of Greater Nashville has served 885 house-holds representing 3,142 people, many of whom work in the following industries: hospitality, housekeeping, healthcare, education, clerical, warehouse logistics, transportation, State of Tennessee, manufacturing, food industry, and retail among others.

The Nashville ReStore continues to provide shoppers with some of the best new and gently used items around with continued markdowns every 14 days. In its second year at the new location at 414 Harding Place, annual revenue from the ReStore provides operational funding and affordable housing construction support. Habitat Nashville also operates ReStores in Dickson and Wilson counties.

• Many donations came from big ticket events like the 2019 NFL Draft, 2019 CMA Fest, 2018 CMA Awards, and Big Machine Label After Party.

• The ReStore received more than 17,500 donations either dropped off or picked up from local residents and companies. These donations, while helping Habitat for Humanity tremend-ously, divert 1,165 tons yearly from landfills.

• Major donors to the ReStore include: Ace Hard-ware, Bank of America, CMT, Costco, English & Company, Hermitage Lighting, Kirkland’s, Lowe’s Fulfillment Center, Nippon Express, PP&G, Sprintz Furniture, Steves & Sons, and Tennsco.

• This year saw an increase in volunteers with more than 26,085 combined volunteer hours completed by 2,370 individual volunteers.

• More than 100 volunteer groups leant a helping hand including: Catholic Heart Work Camp, Comcast, HCA Healthcare, Ideal Lease, Top Golf, UPS, YouthWorks, and local high schools, colleges and universities.

through the support of the 2019 Carter Work Project. Working men and women in these families hold jobs in such industries as healthcare, State of Tennessee, education, and warehouse logistics — all fundamental to the booming local economy. At day’s end, marching bands from five area

high schools, including Hunters Lane, Whites Creek, Stratford STEM Magnet, Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet and Maplewood, led volunteers off the site, surrounded by the sound of trumpets and trombones. Team Captain Roman Josi and Matt Deschene from the Predators came out on Monday and the Tennessee Titans Rookie class and cheerleaders also joined in the week’s activities, helping to serve lunch to volunteers on Tuesday. Grand Ole Opry Members Chuck Mead,

Riders in the Sky, Suzy Boggus, Don Schlitz and Mark Wills entertained the lunch crowd throughout the week. The memorable Carter Work Project wrapped up on Friday at the Grand Ole Opry, where Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood recognized President Carter on stage in front of a sold-out crowd. Also on Friday, the hammer was officially passed to the Dominican Republic Habitat affiliate, host site for the 2020 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project.

In June, 100 vo lunteers f rom Discovery, Inc. came to Nashville to help Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville prepare for the 2019 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. In addition to employee and executive volunteers, some Discovery,

Inc. networks’ stars worked installing windows, roof trusses, doors, siding, insulation and overall framing for three houses. Paige Davis and Brett Tutor of TLC’s Trading Spaces, HGTV’s Jasmine Roth (Hidden Potential) and Tarek El Moussa (Flip or Flop), Dave

Salmoni of Animal Planet’s Animal Bites, and Food Network’s Maneet Chauhan, who serves as a judge on Chopped and owns several popular restaurants in downtown Nashville all joined the fun, along with Tennessee’s First Lady Maria Lee.

Wilson Habitat for Humanity welcomed two new Habitat homeowners in the fall of 2018: John and Lauren Riley and Alawi Alsaedy and Nihad Mohammed. John and Lauren are the parents of three children, a teenager to an infant. Their previous rental was an old home that had packing tape covering cracked windows, mold, and electric outlets that didn’t work. Lauren works for Famous Footwear while John is recovering from a back injury leaving them a one-income family. “This Habitat home is such a huge blessing to us. It has helped us have more time together as a family and save money that we paid towards excessive utilities,” says Lauren.

Alawi and Nihad are the parents of two young daughters. Nihad works for N&E Enterprises while Alawi is recovering from a car accident. Their previous apartment complex felt unsafe and didn’t have washer and dryer hookups. The couple are from Iraq and lived in a refugee camp for five years before being resettled to the U.S. in 1996. “It is a blessing to get

this help. We could not do it without you.” Nihad says, “We appreciate it beyond words. We are so happy.”

Wilson Habitat celebrated Joyce Agobi and Carolyn Dixon as new Habitat homeowners in the spring of 2019. Joyce is the single mother of three children and her previous rent had risen three times before she became a Habitat for Humanity homeowner. Joyce works two jobs to make ends meet and found out about Habitat for Humanity after moving to the U.S. from Sudan for a “second chance and better life.”

Carolyn is the single mother of two children who was paying more than 50 percent of her annual income on housing. She currently works as a cook at an assisted living community. “At my age, the opportunity to own my own home makes me feel that I have accomplished something and overcome my past . . . I feel like I’ve made it through the fog and came out better than ever,” Carolyn says.

Highlights

• Houses of Hope featured dinner and a large silent and live auctions

generating over $28,000 in revenue – the most in the six-year history of the event! During this special night, three awards were presented (see photos below):

º The Dave Wilmer Spirit of Vol-unteerism Award went to former board members Karl Rehmer and Linda Rising who have remained heavily involved with Habitat as volunteers over the years.

º The Community Partnership Award went to the Bridgestone D i s t r i b u t i o n C e n t e r. T h ey have been a committed House Sponsor since 2012, providing volunteer groups in five of the past seven years as well as being a four-time team sponsor in the annual Golf Challenge.

º The Spirit of Habitat Award went to The Bridge Fellowship, a dedicated sponsor in the annual Faith Build for six consecutive years.

• The 11th annual Golf Challenge at Five Oaks Golf & Country Club drew the largest group of participants to date. With 108 golfers taking part, over $60,000 was raised!

Cheatham Habitat welcomed Joseph and Lindsay Preciado to their new Habitat home in the spring of 2019. They have two children under the ages of 3 and must carefully balance the costs of childcare while they both work and share one vehicle. Joseph has worked for Parallon for two years in the insurance and data analysis department and Lindsay has

worked at Parallon for under a year. The couple struggled to afford their Nashville rent, a car loan, and school debts which brought them to Habitat for Humanity. Their Habitat mortgage has decreased their housing cost nearly $500 a month.

On Oct. 4, 2018, Cheatham Habitat raised $31,928 in donations (including

$3,344 in Gift-In-Kind) at the annual Houses of Hope, and Rob Myers was awarded the prestigious John E. Mayfield Hammer of Hope Volunteer of the Year Award for his work in securing sponsorships and volunteers from United Structural Systems and 24 Church.

Dickson Habitat welcomed Jennifer Meade and Amy Mayfield as new Habitat homeowners in fiscal year 2019. Jennifer at 21 years old had two young boys and worked two part-time jobs when she found herself homeless and living out of the back of her car. She never thought she could afford a home and moved from one trailer to the next trying to find stability for her family. Today, her boys are grown and she lives in a Habitat for Humanity home after a church member told her about Habitat’s homeownership program. Jennifer works for the State of Tennessee.

Amy has been with the Tennessee Department of Children Services for one year and worked for the State of Tennessee for six years. She completed her bachelor’s degree with a double major in psychology and sociology while working full time. She has two daughters and in their previous rental, the girls were not allowed to go outside because of safety concerns. Amy feels a Habitat home is the most realistic option to keep her daughters safe and create a brighter future for all of them.

H i g h l i g h t s• The annual Houses of Hope luncheon

raised $34,981. Dickson Habitat cele-brated 25 years of service to the community by recognizing the following charter board members at the luncheon with the Legacy of Hope Awards: Mack Adams, Norris Allen, Ed Blackburn, Hu Mayes, Mary Simmons, and Carey Thompson. The Dickson Habitat ReStore Volunteer of the Year Award went to Alex Jackson because of his enormous commitment of time to the ReStore.

• The annual Dickson Bowling event raised $6,035.

Robertson CountyHabitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville has expanded its service area to include Robertson County. “As we branch out into Robertson County, we are excited to cultivate local partnerships with businesses, churches, civic groups and potential applicants as we seek to put God’s love into action,” said Jeff Bennett, director of divisions. Bennett said fundraising in the Robertson division will begin in 2020 with the intent to accept applications for homeownership in 2021.
