UPDATE FOR 2019 STATE CONVENTION
The dates are getting closer for our convention this year. So we thought we would give a
quick update to you all.
We are looking forward to what we hope to be a brilliant weekend of dancing.
We currently have just over 90 registrations for the weekend of which we have 10 callers and
2 cuers to entertain the dancers with some amazing choreography.
Friday night of the convention will kick off with the theme night for the weekend. As the
theme is ‘Stars of the Big Screen’; we are looking forward to seeing everyone dress up as their
favourite character. There will a prize for best dressed male and female.
Friday night of the convention will also see the traditional banner parade. If you have not
registered for the banner parade and you are attending the convention; please send us an
email to register your club for the banner parade.
Saturday night of the convention depending on numbers may include dress square parade
bracket. At this stage we only have 2 – 3 dressed squares and its something that we do not
want to lose. So if you would like to register for the dressed square; please send us an email
to [email protected] . If we do not have enough numbers by the 1st July
2019; we will have cancel the dress square part of the convention.
Sunday night after the completion of the convention; there will be a little gathering for all
weekend ticket holders, helpers and volunteers. It will be a great little wind down session to
finish off a good weekend of dancing.
The local Rockhampton club will be holding a before and after dance for those dancers who
are in the area before and after the convention. A flyer for these two dancers will be out in
the bugle and on the website very soon.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Greetings members and dancers, What an exciting time for dancing is coming up. We are starting to have details confirmed for the major events we are looking forward to attending and dancing. Firstly, we are excited to hear that Bribie Island Square Dancers held on Thursdays are going to host the Sunshine State Roundup to be held at Kallangur Community Hall on 28 September. The advert giving all the details is within this edition of the Bugle.
The Queensland Convention is fast approaching and I am looking forward to catching up with all of you in Rockhampton in September. Winter is settling in, and this is reflected by the numbers reported by clubs being down, affected by both the cold weather and illness. Condolences are sent to Grace Reinhardt and family on the passing of Bill this past week. We are thinking of them all with sympathy. Congratulations to Glenn Wilson for 25 years of calling, and to George and Ann Stevens, who have been within the square dance community for many of their 60 years of Wedded bliss. We have included articles in this edition about both these events. It’s so interesting to hear more about the people we are dancing with and their stories as within all these oral histories are hidden gems about square dance history. Talking about oral history and memory, did you know that dancing is good for your memory? Reputable studies, published within medical journals are showing that dancing is good for your memory. I have heard square dancing in particular is great as you don’t just exercise your memory and coordination, but also have to respond in real time to the hoedown calls, so working the brain that little bit harder. One such article can be found at Human Neuroscience 2017; 11:305 Talking of which I received a copy of this photo of a jumper that had been left at the Buderim Dance Centre from Nev McLachlan. We believe its been lying there for the last year or so. Anyone forgot to pick it up? It is possible that it was an interstate visitor as I believe it could have been there for as long as two years. Contact Suncoasters directly as Nev is absent for the next few months.
Yours at dancing, Russell Wall

Congratulations Glenn Wilson
25 years of calling Glenn Wilson was first introduced to Square Dancing as a compulsory part of the curriculum at Zillmere
State School in the 60s. It was while at Pine Rivers High School in 1976, he went to his first real Square
Dance with a live caller and became hooked. The club was “Pine Rangers” run by Alan Leighton and his
wife Jenny. He entered and won the club’s Amateur Callers contest in 1977, this contest was judged by
legendary Queensland caller Eric Wendell.
After his naval career was over, in 1993, he started square dancing again at “Caboolture E.Z. Squares”. By
the end of that year, he did his first singing call and started his first teaching class for “Caboolture E.Z.
Squares” in early 1995. He called at Caboolture until the end of 2017.
In 2001, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Squares” at Bald Hills came into being, this club continued for 4 years on the 2nd
Friday of every Month. During 2003 Glenn was asked to be the club caller for a new club at Geebung,
“Northside Promenaders” which started in early 2004 and is still going strong today. This club moved to
Zillmere in 2013 and kept the same name.
In late 2017 Glenn took over the calling duties at “UpBeat Ch.a.o.s.” SD club at Deception Bay.
Glenn has called at 13 Australian National Conventions - 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012,
2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 & 2017. Glenn was the Assistant Venue Manager at the ANSDC Caloundra 2003,
also the Program Manager at the 49th ANSDC Brisbane 2008. He has called at most Queensland State
Conventions since 1995 and was Sound Manager at 7 of them.
Glenn has been a member of the Queensland Callers Association since 1994; Vice President in 1999 -
2000 and again in 2002 - 2003 and again from 2012 to present. He was President of the Association in
2009 and 2010; QCA Assistant Caller Training Officer from 2009 – 2017.
He has been a Member of The Australian Callers Federation since 1994 and an ACF board member from
2011 to 2017.
He was the Chairman of the Committee organising the ACF Caller/Cuer Conference 2016, the ACF State
Co-ordinator for Queensland from 2011 - 2017. He’s been a Callerlab Member since 2007 and a member
of the Callerlab Mainstream & Plus Committees.
Glenn has attended most QCA training sessions since 1994 and have been involved in presenting QCA caller
training sessions since 2004 up to the present. He has also presented 3 caller training sessions for the QCA
in Cardwell, North Queensland. Glenn attended 6 x Brian Hotchkies 5-day caller’s schools (2003, 2006, 2009,
2010, 2013 & 2015) and helped with a Sight Resolution presentation in 2013.
Glenn was the first caller in Queensland to use CD’s as his principal music player and in June 2004 was one
of the first in Queensland switch completely digital and use a laptop computer as his music player. Glenn is
also the pioneer in Australia, of using a USB hub for callers to present their music at combined functions.
Glenn has recorded 26 vocals on 6 different square dance labels

Congratulations George and Ann
60th Wedding Anniversary
On Thursday 20th June George and Ann Stevens celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Six plus
sets at Gumdale Glandsliders helped them to celebrate this major event on Wednesday 19th June.
They had on display letters and certificates of congratulations from many dignitaries, including Queen
Elizabeth II, The Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, and Premier of Queensland Anastacia Palazeck.
We are told they had a major party with close family and friends the weekend prior and celebrated
the actual date by enjoying a quiet dinner at a Thai restaurant.
Ann has kindly contributed the following:
“We were married on 20th June 1959 at St James Anglican Church in Toowoomba.
Our home for the first five years was a caravan in which we travelled around western Queensland with
Ipswich being our home base.
Our four children were all born in Ipswich, Kevin in 1960, Neil in 1962, Bruce in 1965 and Leanne
in1977. We moved to Cleveland in 1978 after purchasing a meat chicken farm which we had until
2000.
Our dancing started in 1974 with Alan Rayner at Redland Bay and also with Graham Brandon. We
were dancing five times a week as well as travelling around Australia and overseas.
We now enjoy dancing at our main club, Gumdale Grandsliders.”

HERVEY BAY SQUARE DANCE CLUB JUNE NEWS
This month has been very full on. On the 2nd Jun we held our bi-monthly birthday luncheon, approx 14 members attended the function at the one of the local hotels. On Saturday 8th Jun we had James Reid as our guest caller for our social dance event. Saturday afternoon was devoted to a Plus session and on the Saturday night a mainstream dance was held. A good attendance enabled us at times to have four squares on the floor. As always James provided us with a very enjoyable night of dancing. Thanks to the members from Bundy and Maryborough for coming along and especially to Matthew Mills for his duets and calling with James. On Friday 21 June we departed on a mystery bus tour, 30 of our members participating. We departed the Bay at 8am, our first stop was at the Ohana Winery at Childers, morning tea and wine tasting. Next stop the Lavender Farm on the road to Baggara. Back on the bus to Bagarra for a pleasant lunch at the Golf Club. Next stop the SS Strawberry farm at Bunderburg, a tour and tasting were the order there. Our next mystery stop was the Kalki Moon Distillery and Brewery. Good choice, tour and tasting. A few fine Gin samples were partaken by many. Our final mystery stop was the Vitners Secret Winery, What a magnificent place, full of small alcoves and great gardens, a fitting stop before heading back to the Bay.

EZ Squares Caboolture News Our club has decided to trial a new venue, day and time for our dance sessions. With more and more dancers preferring not to drive at night we are going to try Sunday afternoon from 2pm – 4pm. We have found a lovely air-conditioned venue at the Caboolture Senior Citizens Hall, 24 Hasking Street Caboolture.
As always, visitors are most welcome so please join us on Sunday 30th June and/or Sunday 7th July and let us know what you think of the venue and time. If the change is successful, we can continue there on a permanent basis and possibly extend the time to 3 hours to include Plus. See you on the dance floor.

Suncoasters Square Dance Club
"Suncoasters had a good turn up for the dance on Saturday, 15 June. Thank you to our members and friends who travelled a long distance. We enjoyed a good night of dancing. Nev and Bev are about to embark on a holiday for a few weeks and we wish them a very happy time away. Elaine Davis will be our caller for Saturdays and Mondays and her usual Wednesday and Frances McAllister will call for us on the first five Tuesday nights. On Saturday, 29 June, we are are having a 'Pyjama Party' theme which will be interesting. Suncoasters are sad to say that Bill Reinhardt passed away on 21 June. Bill, his wife Grace and daughter, Annette have been very active members of the club since 1983. Our sympathies go to his family.

“I learnt to swear by my mum sewing square dance petticoats. She is always the ultimate lady until things don’t go to plan on the sewing machine and her first attempts when I was only about 13 years of age resulted in the air turning blue! All those new words for a teen to use…hehehe”
