A Warm Welcome from the Head of Sixth

Form

At Newman Sixth we receive excellent results year on year and are extremely proud of our

consistent high achievement.

In 2019, we received our best A Level results yet, with 26% of our students receiving A*-A

grades and 79% receiving A*-C. Our pass rate is 100% and is testament to our outstanding

teaching practise and support available in our Sixth Form.

We are a small community and have modest facilities, but with that comes smaller class

sizes and personalised intervention so that all students have an opportunity to do their

very best.

As well as academic success, we also strive to cultivate compassionate, mature and

ambitious young adults. Through the plethora of extra-curricular activities that we offer

and our strong volunteering programme, every student is encouraged to show dedication

and compassion during their time with us.

We hope that you enjoy our open evening and use the opportunity to meet our talented

teachers and talk to our exceptional students. I look forward to meeting you soon.

“The Sixth Form is a great at making students

feel welcome and part of the community.

Despite it being connected to a Catholic school,

all faiths are welcome and treated equally. The

small classes allow students to learn quicker

and easier as they get a lot more attention from

the teachers.” A Yr 13 student.

“Newman Sixth is such as student orientated

college. The support and care you get from

teachers and staff make it so much less stressful.

You feel prepared and calm which is probably one

of the most important factors I took into

consideration when choosing this college.”

A Yr 12 student.

“Newman Sixth has both a welcoming

social environment and a great learning

atmosphere. Teachers are very willing

to help you if you get stuck. When you

have an issue, the N6 team are very

good at helping you find a solution.”

A Yr 12 student.

What student support is there?

Strong Academic Support:

Our Sixth Form teachers are outstanding and

offer daily support beyond what is taught in

their classrooms; they run extra intervention

sessions and weekly study groups to resolve

misunderstandings, but to also deepen

students’ wider knowledge.

Students are assigned supervised study sessions

where they have time and resources available to

them to complete independent revision.

Personalised support is available from the study

supervisor to assist with learning and revision

techniques.

Pastoral Support:

Sixth Form can be a stressful time for many

students and so we provide a range of

pastoral support to ensure that all students

stay happy and mindful; tutors use flexi-

registration to monitor students, Assistant

Heads of Year meet regular with individuals

and also offer ‘open talk time’ sessions to

explore any barriers to their learning.

We have a designated counsellor who

offers weekly sessions, as well as a

comprehensive PSHE curriculum that

covers topics such as positive mental

health, wellness and support.

Discover more: www.newman6th.com @newman6th

Financial Support:

We understand that our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and may

require financial support. We offer 2 types of bursary which students may apply for

each year:

• Vulnerable learners – up to £30 a week for young people who require

financial aid.

• Discretionary fund – up to £15 a week which are awarded to students on an individual basis to help with the cost of transport, meals, books, university visits or equipment. This bursary will be at the discretion of Miss Blackbird.

• There is also a budget set aside for Aim Higher students to cover the cost of

additional courses, music lessons, trips, and enrichment programmes.

Career Support:

We have a dedicated Careers Advisor, Ms Palmiero, who supports students in

their future aspirations and pathways post-18; this could be advising students on

degree apprenticeships or helping students prepare for interviews. In addition to

this, students visit the Annual UCAS Careers Fair, Interview Skills days at Tui and

the London Apprenticeship Show. This is supported by a detailed PSHE curriculum

that uses the platform Unifrog to allow students to broaden their understanding

of their post-18 options.

99% of our students continue onto further education, employment or degree

apprenticeships, with around 70% of students continuing their study into

University.

Potential Oxbridge students have the opportunity to attend the Epsom

conference and also join a fortnightly seminar that supports students with

applications, personal statements and interviews run by an Oxford graduate. We

have links with Cambridge and Imperial University who host mock interview days

for us each year.

Our vision is to create a respectful community, that leads by example in acts of kindness and compassion. Our goal is to help students to become well-rounded young adults who are ambitious, accepting of others and well-prepared to face whatever challenges they may experience in the world. We believe our enrichment program is integral to this vision. We also have a range of social events that all our students take part in:

Annual Christmas Bazaar organised and ran by the Sixth Form for the rest of the school.

Multiple fundraisers throughout the year, such as Hello Yellow, where we raised over £200 for mental health awareness

Themed Alternative Sports Day A range of socials including a Halloween and Valentine’s club night Summer trip to Thorpe Park Christmas trip Ice Skating A range of subject based trips their own trips throughout the year, including

visits to the theatre, Auschwitz and Rome to name only a few. Students can also undertake paid work through our student cleaners and web

team.

Our Ambassadors & Exec Team

Every year we select 10 Ambassadors to

support the Head of Sixth Form and be our

post-16 role models. These Ambassadors form

part of the Exec Team that are the ‘student

voice’ of the Sixth Form.

The Ambassadors and the Exec team meet

weekly with the Head of Sixth Form and make

suggestions or propose ideas which help make

the Newman Sixth Community be the best it

can be. This includes discussing topics such as

half-termly socials, school-based fundraising

for charities that the students want to support

or termly reward trips to ice rinks, basketball

competitions and Thorpe Park.

This year’s team have been fantastic in raising

money for mental health awareness with the

Hello Yellow day, fundraising for CAFOD and

through supporting staff at Open Evening

events as tour guides or speakers.

A Yr 13 student Ambassador said, “It is a

wonderful opportunity to work as a real team

and make a difference in the college. I feel

valued and like my opinions count. I was shy

before, but being part of the Exec has helped

me to build my confidence in speaking to

others.”

Our Newman Facilities

Discover more: www.newman6th.com @newman6th

Supervised Study/ IT Suite

Our Study space is a quiet working area where

students can revise. It provides computers and all

the resources students may require to study

effectively and gain the best results they can.

Common Room

We have a newly refurbished common room,

which is fully equipped with table football and a

speaker alongside comfy lounge chairs. Students

are able to personalise the notice boards to allow

them to feel a part of our community.

Chapel and Prayer Room

As a multi-faith Sixth Form, students may choose to

use the chapel or an alternative prayer room for

their prayer.

Careers Hub and group study area

Students may use the library in the careers hub to

search for post-18 pathways, but many use this

area for group study work as well.

Canteen

We have a cashless catering system in our canteen.

Sixth Formers have their own lunch period

separate to the rest of the school, but they may

also use this space in their free time for further

study.
