THE QUICK SCOOP• Coming off a thrilling overtime win at Stetson last Saturday, the FGCU men’s basketball team opens the third week of ASUN action at home as Kennesaw State visits Alico Arena on Thursday night . Tip-off is set for 7 PM and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+ .• The game will be a Blue Out for Eagles fans as well as Multicultural Night with a special halftime performance from FGCU Salseros which is a campus latin dance organization . • The Eagles split their week two schedule of league play with a road loss at North Florida before the win at Stetson - a game which featured 18 lead changes and eight ties . Sophomore Caleb Catto (Cape Coral, Fla .) scored a team-high and career-high 19 points while junior Jalen Warren (Milton, On-tario) had 16 points - eight of which came in overtime . • Sophomore Zach Scott (Miami, Fla .) continues to lead the Eagles in scoring this season with 11 .3 points per night followed by Catto’s 10 .9 points . Along with Warren’s 9 .5 points per outing, the trio’s 603 combined points account for half of the team’s 1,168 total points .• Warren’s 68 assists on the season are the second-most of any other play-er in the ASUN . Scott’s name also pops up in the league rankings leading the ASUN in total steals (30) . • As a team, the Eagles lead the league with an average of 4 .1 blocks per game . Both freshman Dakota Rivers (Windermere, Fla .) and junior Justus Rainwater (Enumclaw, Wash .) have spearheaded that effort, combining for a total of 48 blocks, the most of any duo in the conference . Individually, Rainwater ranks 4th with 25, while Rivers is 5th (23) . • Through four ASUN games, Catto and Warren lead FGCU with 13 .3 and 11 .5 points per game, respectively .• KSU has struggled this year under first year head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim and enters the game with a 1-15 overall record and 0-3 mark in ASUN play . Tyler Hooker (13 .5) and Jamie Lewis (13 .0) lead the Owls in scoring, while Ugo Obineke and Terrell Burden are each just shy of double-figure scoring averages .• Week three of ASUN play continues this Saturday when FGCU heads to North Alabama on Saturday, Jan . 18 (4:30 PM) . The Eagles won’t have a Week 4 Thursday game but will host NJIT on Saturday, Jan . 25 at Alico Arena .

SERIES HISTORY VS. KENNESAW STATE• FGCU enters Thursday night with a 19-7 all-time record against Kennesaw State following a pair of wins last season . The Eagles won 72-59 in Ken-nesaw (1/19) before sweeping the series later in February (78-56) in Alico Arena .• At Alico Arena, the Eagles are 11-3 all-time in the series . Only one of those losses have come in the past 10 games in Fort Myers . • FGCU averages 72 points per game in the series .

HOME SWEET HOME• With four home wins this year, FGCU sports an impressive advantage at Alico Arena, a .k .a ., The Nest . • The Eagles hold a 210-73 record in Alico Arena (75 .4%) including a 103-30 record (81%) over the last eight years . FGCU was 10-4 at home in 2018-19 with a 7-1 conference mark (best in the ASUN) .

TOUGH ROAD • FGCU had one of the tougher mid-major non-conference schedules in the country in 2018-19 and will do so again in 2019-20 . • The first five opponents last year (Illinois St ., Southeastern, Michigan St ., South Dakota St ., and Toledo) either won their regular season conference championship or played in their conference championship game in 2017-18 . • To start the 2019-20 campaign, the Eagles took on defending Atlantic 10 Champion Saint Louis followed by UMBC which fell last year to Vermont in the America East title game . The schedule is also full of name-brand op-ponents in VCU, Southern California, Mercer, and South Dakota State before getting into ASUN play following one of the league’s best seasons ever .• It’s also been a heavy frequent flyer non-conference season in 2019 aver-aging 1,243 miles per trip (8,700 miles total) . Included in those were trips to USC (2,650 miles), South Dakota State (1,800), Dartmouth (1,500) and Saint Louis (1,200) .

LAST TIME OUT - OT WIN AT STETSON• Caleb Catto scored a career-high 19 points and Jalen Warren netted eight of his 16 points in overtime as the FGCU men’s basketball team won 66-62 at Stetson’s Edmunds Center last Saturday . The back-and-forth contest featured 18 lead changes and eight ties before the Eagles were able to pull away in the final 64 seconds of overtime .• “I thought that was as gritty of a road win as we’ve had since I’ve been here; it was a great team effort and we really had some guys step up to-night,” said head coach Michael Fly . “We challenged them tonight to limit Stetson on the offensive glass and to hold them to zero second chance points was a really huge accomplishment . I’m really proud of the fight and resolve that the team had especially when we were down some late .”• Catto finished the day going 5-of-7 from three-point range and 7-of-13 overall while adding six rebounds . Warren’s 16 points included a 4-of-4 free throw performance with two of them coming in the final 25 seconds of over-time pushing the FGCU lead to four . Rounding out the Eagles’ top scorers was Zach Scott who had 10 points, while Tracy Hector tied his career-high with seven assists to go with five rebounds and three steals .

SCOTT & CATTO A SOPHOMORE DUO• Sophomores Zach Scott and Caleb Catto are two of three returning play-ers for FGCU from last season and have seen dramatic increases in their production from their rookie campaigns .• Scott has increased his scoring productivity by nearly three full points going from 8 .4 in 2018-19 to 11 .3 points per game this year . In addition, his rebounding has gone up from 3 .1 per game to 4 .3 per game while his min-utes have increased from 22 .4 to 27 .6 per outing .• Catto has also seen an increase after starting all 19 games this year and averaging 30 .7 minutes compared to 32 games played (no starts) and 17 .9 minutes per game . He is averaging 10 .9 points compared to 4 .1 and is av-eraging 3 .9 rebounds compared to 2 .4 boards per game . He has also been FGCU’s most consistent free throw shooter hitting 26-of-31 ( .839) .• Catto has become the team’s leading scorer in ASUN play averaging 13 .3 points and 4 .3 rebounds in four games . His shooting has improved to 51 .2 percent from the floor overall and 53 .8 percent from beyond the arc .

WARREN GETS SPORTSCENTER’S NO. 1 PLAY; CLUTCH IN OT• In the comeback win over FAU, Jalen Warren’s game-winning floater in over-time was the No . 1 Play of the Day on ESPN’s SportsCenter .• FGCU rallied from a 19-point deficit thanks in part to 21 points from Warren as the Eagles won 72-70 in overtime for their first win of the season .• Warren again made a difference in the Stetson overtime win where he pro-duced eight of his 16 points . He leads the Eagles with a total of 14 points in the two overtime games this year .

GAGLIARDI HEATS UP• Sharp-shooting junior Sam Gagliardi had a breakout game at Mercer notch-ing a season-high 12 points hitting 4-of-8 from beyond the arc . That broke a tough opening streak of 3-of-14 from three-point range in the prior three games combined . The native of Gig Harbor, Wash ., also had a season-high six rebounds increasing his season average to 4 .5 per game .• In the overtime win against FAU, Gagliardi earned his first FGCU start and finished the game with 9 points on 3-of-6 shooting from deep while adding three rebounds, three steals and two assists in 34 minutes .• He picked up 18 points on six made triples in the win over Florida Tech .• Gagliardi was named the ASUN Newcomer of the Week on Jan . 6 after averaging 14 points on 57-percent shooting from beyond the arc (8-of-15) against Liberty and Lipscomb .

LARGIE EARNING MINUTES• Freshman walk-on Cyrus Largie has steadily earned minutes, and even the starting nod at USC, over the course of the season . After averaging roughly 4 minutes in six of the first 11 games, he saw that begin to increase to 15 minutes per game starting with the South Dakota State trip .• Largie had a season-high 9 points at SDSU and is averaging 4 .1 points over the last seven games compared to having just a total of two points in his prior six games played .

In fact, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical is the only other school in Florida that received the award .

HOOPS ON A MISSION• Giving back to the community and making an impact is a hallmark of FGCU . One group that has a close relationship with the basketball team is Hoops On A Mission based in Fort Myers and run by Dwayne Jackson .• This past April, the nonprofit hosted a 3x3 Tournament at Alico Arena to raise money with members of the Eagles serving as referees . Many of the team’s local products, like Caleb Catto, have ties to Jackson and his organi-zation which works to help area youth by using basketball and mentorship to inspire, empower, and have a grand purpose for life .• “There’s people from all over the town that come out to this event,” said Catt . “And it just goes to show who Dwayne is and the impact he’s made .”

ONE OF FLORIDA’S FINEST • With 38 wins over the prior two seasons, the Eagles continue to be one of the top hoop programs in all of Florida . • From 2013-2018, FGCU was the only Division I men’s team in the state of Florida to have 20 wins and reach the postseason in that span . • The Eagles currently rank fourth in wins among the Sunshine State schools over the previous seven years (since 2012-13) .

THE GROWTH OF FGCU • After starting their Division I transition with five-straight losing seasons, the Eagles have now posted six 20-win seasons in the last seven years . • After not finishing higher than sixth place in the ASUN the first five years, FGCU has finished no worse than a tie for third each of the past seven sea-sons . 2007-08 10-21, 6-10 ASUN (T-8th) 2008-09 11-20, 7-13 ASUN (9th) 2009-10 8-21, 5-15 ASUN (T-10th) 2010-11 10-20, 7-13 ASUN (7th) 2011-12 15-17, 8-10 ASUN (T-6th) 2012-13 26-11, 13-5 ASUN (2nd) 2013-14 22-13, 14-4 ASUN (T-1st) 2014-15 22-11, 11-3 ASUN (2nd) 2015-16 21-14, 8-6 ASUN (T-2nd) 2016-17 26-8, 12-2 ASUN (1st) 2017-18 23-12, 12-2 ASUN (1st) 2018-19 14-18, 9-7 ASUN (T-3rd) 2019-20 5-14, 2-2 ASUNASUN Last 6+ Years (Since 2012-13) 159-101, 81-31 ASUN

Michael Fly, who spent the previous seven years as an assistant coach on the Eagles’ staff, was promoted to head coach of the FGCU men’s basketball program on Apr . 5, 2018 .

Including the 2018-19 season, Fly has been a part of more than 160 wins the past eight years, six ASUN Tournament Final appearances, three NCAA Tournament victories, three ASUN Tournament titles and three ASUN Regular Season Championships, two berths in the NIT, a CIT appear-ance and a run to the Sweet Sixteen which captivated the nation and put the Southwest Florida campus on the national radar for good .

The only remaining member from that 2013 Sweet Sixteen squad, Fly has been an integral and loyal member of two staffs which have changed the men’s basketball culture in every facet, resulting in team accomplishments and player developments to coincide with the Dunk City mantra .

A 2006 University of Kentucky alumnus, Fly is the program’s fourth all-time head coach (since 2002; Division I in 2007), joining Dave Balza (2002-11), Andy Enfield (2011-13) and Joe Dooley (2013-18) .

Fly, 36, has coached 13 all-conference selections while with the Green and Blue, including two ASUN Player of the Year honors in Sherwood Brown and Brandon Goodwin, and two ASUN Defensive Player of the Year selections in Bernard Thompson and Demetris Morant . Graduate transfer Schadrac Casimir was named Second Team All-ASUN and was tabbed the conference’s newcomer of the year in 2018-19 .

More recently, Fly is responsible for recruiting Zach Johnson, Brandon Goodwin and Christian Terrell . Johnson scored 1,344 career points in just three years to rank 4th in program history . Goodwin holds the top-two single-season scoring campaigns in program history in his only two years with the Eagles . Terrell is the only player in program history with at least 1,300 points, 500 rebounds and 250 assists .

Of the top-10 players in career points at FGCU, Fly has helped develop eight of them, including all-time leading scorer Thompson (1,835) . Additionally, the Fulton, Ky ., native has coached both the ASUN all-time assists leader Brett Comer (845; 24th in NCAA history) and FGCU all-time leading rebounder Chase Fieler (714) .

A relentless and respected recruiter, Fly has worked tirelessly to build rela-tionships nationally, regionally and particularly in the state of Florida . Of the 13 scholarship players on the 2017-18 team, nine were recruited by Fly and eight hailed from the Sunshine State . Excluding Goodwin’s single-season record of 632 points, 86 percent of FGCU’s points this past season came from Florida natives .

FGCU is one of only 18 teams in the nation to have posted six-straight 20+ win campaigns which have culminated in postseason appearances: 2013, ’16, ’17 NCAA Tournament; 2014, ’18 NIT; 2015 CIT . During Fly’s time on the sidelines with the Eagles, FGCU has secured a 155-86 record ( .643 winning percentage) .

Fly came to FGCU from Florida State where he was the video coordina-tor for three Seminoles’ NCAA Tournament teams (2008-11) and worked with future NBA players Okaro White, Toney Douglas, Solomon Alabi, Ryan Reid, Chris Singleton and Bernard James . Fly also served as the assistant director of Leonard Hamilton Basketball Camps during his time in Tallahassee .

In 2007-08, Fly was a corporate and broadcast alliances intern with the NCAA after serving as a video coordinator intern with the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats in 2006-07 under head coach Bernie Bickerstaff . Fly got his start in

2004-05 as a student assistant at NAIA Georgetown College under head coach Happy Osborne, helping the team advance to the Elite 8 that year .

Several programs have had tremendous success promoting from within, most notably at Butler, Gonzaga and Xavier . In 2007, Brad Stevens – now the head coach of the Boston Celtics – was promoted from his assistant coach position with Butler and led the Bulldogs to a 30-4 record in his first season as the head coach before taking them to consecutive National Championship Game appearances in 2010 and 2011 .

At Gonzaga, Mark Few was an assistant coach for 10 years before being promoted, and has since taken the Bulldogs from a mid-major Cinderella to a traditional national power which reached the NCAA Championship Game in 2017 . Xavier recently lost head coach Chris Mack to the same position at Louisville, but prior to that he was a Musketeers’ five-year assistant before leading the program for the last nine years, leading them to the Sweet Sixteen three times, a pair of Elite Eight trips and a Final Four .

In 2017-18, the Eagles earned an automatic NIT berth with their second-straight outright ASUN Regular Season Championship, and became the only school in the history of the ASUN (since 1978-79) to post six-straight 20-win seasons . From Dec . 29-Feb . 14, FGCU won 13-straight games – the longest in D-I program history, besting a 10-game run in 2014-15 .

FGCU set single-season all-time program records for points (2,847; previous: 2,703 in 2015-16), 3-pointers made (254; previous: 251 in 2011-12), free-throw percentage ( .740; previous: .714 in 2003-04) and field goals made (1,045; previ-ous: 1,008 in 2015-16), while establishing D-I single-season marks for assists (535; previous: 527 in 2016-17) and free throws made (503; previous: 501 in 2015-16) .

In 2016-17, FGCU posted a 26-8 record, matching the program’s D-I single-season wins record and securing the first single-digit loss campaign in the D-I era . The Eagles played their sixth NCAA Tournament game in five seasons after receiving a program-best No . 14 seed and fell just short to No . 3 seed Florida State – the second-tallest team in the nation in 2016-17 – 86-80 .

Fly helped lead FGCU to an ASUN Tournament title in 2015-16, advancing to claim its third NCAA Tournament win in four years with a 96-65 victory over fel-low No . 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson in the First Four – with the 31-point margin of victory in that round of the tournament being the largest in NCAA history .

In 2014-15, FGCU (22-11, 11-3 ASUN) finished with the second-most wins of any D-I team in Florida (North Florida, 23), and a 10-game winning streak during conference action which at the time was the longest in D-I program history .

Fly was instrumental in guiding the Eagles to their initial ASUN Regular Season Championship and first trip to the NIT in 2013-14 . FGCU finished the year with a 22-13 record, including a record 14 wins as part of a 14-4 ASUN mark .

In 2012-13, FGCU (26-11, 13-5 ASUN) again appeared in the ASUN Tournament Final; this time turning in the most impressive 40 minutes in program history up to that point by defeating No . 1 seed and host Mercer, 88-75, on its home floor to become the first team into the 2013 NCAA Tournament .

Deemed a No . 15 seed and sent to Philadelphia, the Eagles captured the hearts of the city and the nation by defeating No . 2 seed Georgetown, 78-68, before extending their win streak to seven games with another double-figure win over No . 7 seed San Diego State, 81-71 . FGCU’s high-flying attack – which culminated in a then-program-record 148 dunks – helped the Eagles become the only No . 15 seed in NCAA history to advance to the Sweet Sixteen and the first team since Florida in 1987 to win its first two NCAA Tournament contests .

In 2011-12 under then-head coach Enfield, the Eagles advanced to the ASUN Tournament Final in the program’s first year of postseason eligibility, falling just 20 minutes short of the NCAA Tournament and finishing with 15 wins .

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT FLYFly is an outstanding basketball coach . His hire as head coach brings tremen-dous pride to all of us who have watched him grow the last seven years into one of the best assistant coaches on the East Coast . His extreme dedication and loyalty to FGCU and to the players he has coached is admired by all . This a great day for Coach Fly and the FGCU men’s basketball program, and we look forward to following the success of the Eagles in the coming seasons .-- Andy Enfield, FGCU Head Coach 2011-14; Current USC Head Coach Fly is an excellent choice to be the head basketball coach at FGCU . There is no question that he has prepared himself for this position because he has studied the game throughout his career, and will utilize the skills he has learned to be a detail-orientated teacher to all of his players . He will recruit well, and his players will enjoy playing for him because he will be an outstanding mentor during not only their playing careers but throughout their lives . He has grown up on the game of basketball; it’s in his blood . Michael has absolutely put himself in a posi-tion to be a successful head coach .-- Leonard Hamilton, Florida State Head Coach

Fly was like a father figure for me all four years at FGCU – he helped get me through college both on and off the court . He’s been a mentor for me as I’ve got into coaching and been there for me almost every step of the way . He’ll keep FGCU moving in the right direction and maybe even higher heights . I couldn’t be happier for him; he’s earned this opportunity by staying loyal to the program and the community .-- Brett Comer, FGCU Guard 2011-15; Current Director of Operations at Dayton This is an amazing hire for FGCU . It’s not just a stepping-stone job for Fly; he loves FGCU and the surrounding area . Of all the coaches that I’ve played for, none of them keep in contact as often as Fly, and his passion for the FGCU program is incredible . He is a hire that I’m very proud of as an alumnus .-- Chase Fieler, FGCU Forward 2010-14; Current Professional Player Fly is a tremendous pick as the next head coach . He’s one of those guys you can’t help but respect; I saw him almost as a head coach these past few years even though he was an assistant . He really wants to see guys succeed, and I can’t think of one problem I ever had with him . He brought me in, and it would have been nice to play for him, but I’m proud of him and I’ll definitely be following along closely . He’s going to bring a fast-paced style to the team and program . His worth ethic is second-to-none, and I can only see positive things in the future for FGCU .-- Brandon Goodwin, FGCU Guard 2016-18

DONNIE MARSHASSOCIATE HEAD COACH • FRANKLIN & MARSHALL ‘79

Bringing nearly 40 years of collegiate experience, veteran Donnie Marsh is in his second season as the program’s associate head coach in 2019-20 .

Beyond his head-coaching stints at FIU and Alabama A&M, Marsh’s 35+ years of college coaching experience includes stops at Florida State, Virginia Tech, Indiana, UAB, Texas Southern and USF, in addition to more than a decade in Division III to begin his career .

Prior to his most recent tenure as the head coach at Alabama A&M, Marsh served as the associate head coach from 2014-17 at Texas Southern, helping the Tigers to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2015 and 2017, and an NIT berth in 2016 following a Southwestern Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship . TSU also won regular-season titles in 2015 and 2017, in addi-tion to a 2013 crown when Marsh spent the 2012-13 season as an associate head coach with the program .

During his one year away from Texas Southern in 2013-14, Marsh was an assistant coach at USF . That year, FGCU and USF’s matchup ended contro-versially in double overtime, when Chase Fieler’s full-court tip-in with .3 of a second showing was waved off .

Marsh spent 2006-12 as the associate head coach at UAB, helping guide the Blazers to four-straight postseason appearances (3 NITs and 1 NCAA) from 2007-11 . During that span, UAB compiled an impressive record of 95-41 ( .698), including the program’s first outright Conference USA Regular Season Championship in 2011 .

Marsh, who is known as one of the top recruiters in the nation, made an im-mediate impact on UAB during his first season in 2006-07 . He was responsible for bringing several newcomers who made up the nation’s 9th-ranked class in 2007, according to CollegeHoopsUpdate .com . Additionally, the 2007 class was ranked among the nation’s top 25 of incoming classes by almost every major recruiting service .

Prior to his time at UAB, Marsh was an assistant coach at Indiana from 2004-06 . Before his arrival, Indiana ranked 8th in the Big 10 in points allowed (67 .6) and 5th in field-goal percentage defense ( .433) . Under Marsh’s tutelage, the Hoosier defense improved considerably, rising to 5th in scoring defense (63 .6) and tied for 3rd in field-goal percentage defense ( .420) . While with IU, Marsh helped guide the Hoosiers to the 2005 NIT and 2006 NCAA Tourna-ment .

Marsh arrived in Bloomington after spending the previous four seasons as the head coach at FIU . During his tenure in Miami from 2000-04, the Panthers ranked among the Sun Belt Conference leaders in total defense and offensive rebounding . Marsh also played a key role in the development of guard Carlos Arroyo .

After his stellar FIU career ended in 2001, Arroyo became – at the time – just the fifth Puerto Rico native in history to play in the NBA when he debuted for the Toronto Raptors . Arroyo has also played with the Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, Miami Heat and Boston Celtics . Arroyo was a member of the Puerto Rico National Team that participated in the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games .

Prior to FIU, Marsh served as an assistant (1997-99) and associate head coach (1999-00) at Virginia Tech . Marsh had gone to Virginia Tech after serv-ing as an assistant coach at Florida State from 1995-97, helping the Semi-noles to the 1997 NIT Final .

As the head coach at Trenton State (N .J .) College, now named College of New Jersey, from 1989-93, Marsh compiled a four-year record of 64-41 . That was highlighted by a 22-6 record and NCAA Tournament berth in 1990 .

A 1979 graduate of Franklin & Marshall (Pa .) College with a bachelor’s degree in history and education, Marsh earned All-American honors and helped the Diplomats to a 27-5 record and Division III Final Four . He averaged 15 .4 points per game during his career, including 18 .9 as a senior, which helped him be-come the 3rd-round pick of the Atlanta Hawks in the 1979 NBA Draft .

After a brief professional playing stint, Marsh spent six years as assistant basketball coach, head baseball coach and associate director of admissions at Franklin & Marshall from 1980-86 . Marsh was inducted into the Franklin & Marshall Hall of Fame in 1984 . In 1987-88, Marsh served as the president of Players in Action, Inc ., a firm that represented professional athletes .

Marsh, who earned a master’s degree in health and human performance from Texas Southern in May 2017, made his head-coaching debut at Division III Elizabethtown (Pa .) College in 1988-89 before moving on to the College of New Jersey .

A graduate of Atlantic City (N.J.) High School, Marsh and his wife, LaRoyce, have a son, Tyler, and a daughter, Sydnee.

JUSTIN FURRASSISTANT COACH • WINGATE ‘99

Bringing a wealth of experience at the Division I and Division II levels, former Barry University top assistant coach Justin Furr is in his first season as FGCU’s assistant coach in 2018-19 .

Formerly the lead assistant coach with Barry for the past three seasons, Furr – who has been an assistant with the Miami-based school since 2013 – began his duties with the Eagles on May 14 .

This past season with Barry, Furr helped guide the Buccaneers to a 23-9 record, advancing to the Elite Eight of the D-II NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years . In addition, Barry defeated Auburn – which won the SEC Regular Season Championship – in an exhibition contest to open the year . Barry made a school-record 391 3-pointers; in fact, Barry’s top four 3-point total seasons came between 2014-18 with Furr on the sidelines .

In Furr’s five seasons at Barry, the Buccaneers made the NCAA Tourna-ment each year, winning at least one game four times and advancing to the Elite Eight twice . Furr assisted Barry to an impressive 116-38 record ( .753), including three-straight Sunshine State Conference championships . He also recruited the 2016, 2017 and 2018 SSC Players of the Year, in addition to three-time All-American Elvar Fridriksson . Furr was named one of the top 15 assistant coaches in the country by CoachStat .net .

In 2012-13, Furr served as an assistant coach at D-II Lynn University (Boca Raton, Fla .), where he served as a recruiting coordinator and on-floor coach-ing of guards, opponent scouting, fundraising, academic mentoring and all other facets of the program .

Prior to landing at Lynn, Furr was an assistant at D-II Newberry College from 2010-12 where he coached a conference First Team member in 2011 and the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2012 .

Before Newberry, Furr served as an assistant coach at UNC Wilmington for four seasons from 2006-10 . As the program’s recruiting coordinator, Furr as-sembled the No . 2-ranked class in the Colonial Athletic Association in 2007-08, according to Street and Smith’s College Basketball magazine . That class

helped produce the largest turnaround among all D-I teams in 2007-08, go-ing from 7-22 the previous year to 20-13 .

He coached John Fields, who set the UNCW record for blocked shots in a season with 59 . Furr also instructed Keith Rendleman, who finished his career among the top 10 in scoring, blocks and rebounds . Another one of his players, Chad Tomko, finished among UNCW’s career scoring, assists, steals and 3-point leaders .

From 2004-06, Furr was an assistant at High Point University . He aided in the development of Arizona Reid, a two-time Big South Conference Player of the Year, who scored more than 2,000 points and grabbed over 1,000 rebounds in his career . Furr also coached 2004 Big South Player of the Year Danny Gathings .

Furr was the associate head coach at Saint Andrews Presbyterian College in 2003-04 . There he coached Chad Eichelberger, who played professionally in Romania, in addition to logging stints in the American Basketball Associa-tion .

From 2001-03, Furr worked as an assistant at his alma mater, Wingate University . In 2001-02, his team advanced to the D-II NCAA Tournament, fin-ishing 26-7 . He coached Lorinza Harrington, who went on to play for the Den-ver Nuggets, New Orleans Hornets and Memphis Grizzlies . His two Wingate teams had a combined record of 44-18 .

Furr’s coaching start began at Pfeiffer University in 1999 . He was there for two years and made the D-II Sweet Sixteen after becoming the first team in conference history to run the table with an 18-0 record in 1999-00 . Pfeiffer led the country in scoring that year . Furr recruited 1,000-point scorer Rico Grier and a trio of All-American performers .

Furr played collegiately at North Carolina-based Wingate, receiving his Bachelor’s of Science in Sports Management in 1999 . He has a wife, Jennifer, and son, Ezra .

JOEY CANTENSASSISTANT COACH • ECKERD ‘09

Joey Cantens returns to FGCU as an assistant coach for his first season in 2018-19; he previously spent 2011-14 with the Eagles as the program’s Director of Operations .

In 12 total years of college and professional basketball coaching and play-ing experience, Cantens has served a valuable role in three Sweet Sixteen appearances, a No . 3 finish in the FIBA America’s Championship and a No . 20 FIBA World Ranking with the Dominican Republic National Team .

He has spent late June-mid July of 2018 assistant coach with the San An-tonio Spurs – one of the most respected and well-run organizations in the NBA – for their training camp in Texas and Summer League games in Utah and Las Vegas .

A three-year letterwinner at Eckerd College, Cantens is reunited with Fly as the only two members on staff who helped lead FGCU to its historic Sweet Sixteen in 2013 – still the only 15 seed to reach that round in NCAA Tourna-ment history .

Cantens had spent the prior two years in Germany as an assistant coach with a pair of professional clubs . He was on staff with Hebeisen White Wings in 2016-17 before moving to MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in 2017-18, helping lead the team to the Champions League Final Four and a top-10 ranking in Europe .

Prior to that, Cantens was an assistant coach at Division II Indiana Uni-versity of Pennsylvania for 2015-16, aiding in the Crimson Hawks’ 21-8 record and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Championship . Cantens went to IUP from USC where he was the Director of Scouting and Video Oper-ations for the Trojans in 2014-15 under former FGCU head coach Andy Enfield .

Cantens worked with Enfield in his two seasons with the Green and Blue,

culminating in 2012-13 with the program’s first ASUN Tournament Champion-ship and NCAA Tournament victories over 2nd-seeded Georgetown and 7th-seeded San Diego State . He then remained on staff for former head coach Joe Dooley’s first season in 2013-14, playing an integral role in FGCU’s first ASUN Regular Season Championship .

In addition to his collegiate and professional experience, Cantens also possesses a national team coaching background with the Dominican Repub-lic . He has had three different stints as a staff member with the Dominican Republic National Team (summers in 2011, 2013 and 2014) . In 2011, he served under Kentucky head coach John Calipari and helped the team to a 3rd-place finish in the FIBA America’s Championship – the highest in the country’s his-tory . That team afforded Cantens the opportunity to work alongside former NBA players Al Horford, Charlie Villanueva and Francisco Garcia .

Cantens got his start as a graduate manager from 2009-11 at Florida State where Fly was a video coordinator on Leonard Hamilton’s staff . The Seminoles reached the Sweet Sixteen in 2011 .

Cantens began his playing career at FIU for 2005-06 before transferring and graduating from Eckerd in 2009 . While at the St . Petersburg-based school, he made two NCAA Tournament trips and reached the Sweet Sixteen . Cantens was named to the Sunshine State Conference Academic Honor Roll and received the Triton Award, which is presented annually to a student-athlete who reaches the highest levels of athletic achievement, scholarship and leadership . Cantens received his Master’s of Science in Sport Manage-ment from FSU in 2011 .
