2019-2020 SEASON // NASHREP

MANAGING DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to Every Brilliant Thing, a special production as part of our 35th Season!

When we decided to add a sixth show to our MainStage season this year, we knew we wanted to offer

something different than our usual fare. Every Brilliant Thing takes so many elements that are unique to live performance (storytelling, audience participation, stand-up comedy) and combines them to create something that is both instantly familiar and completely new. You will feel this show on both a personal level, and a universal one. Thank you for taking this journey with us.

Speaking of something new, Every Brilliant Thing is just the start of new things happening this season at your resident theatre. This month, we are hosting our first Broadway master class with the star of Disney’s Frozen Jelani Alladin. And already in rehearsal is our brand new holiday production of Patrick Barlow’s A Christmas Carol.

As our artists are deep in planning for our 2020/2021 season, one of the guiding questions we are asking is, “What can we offer to our Nashville community that is new?”

Last month, at one of our open rehearsal events, a long time subscriber asked me if he could expect to see a lot of changes forthcoming at the Rep. The answer is both yes, and no.

You will never see us abandon our commitment to high quality, thought provoking, discussion starting theatre. Shows like last month’s Pipeline are a perfect example of how non-profit theatre can serve its community. But theatre evolves, and the Nashville community is rapidly changing, so Nashville Rep is evolving as well. The Rep’s program is broad enough to offer more. What you will see is our program expanding in many directions, including theatre designed to welcome families and first time theatre goers as well as unique productions that will make you rethink what we define as “theatre.”

In other words, a Nashville Rep that is both instantly familiar and completely new.

But that’s all for the future. Tonight, I truly hope you the unique experience that is Every Brilliant Thing. Thank you once again for being here, and for supporting your Nashville Repertory Theatre.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

What makes life worth living? Every Brilliant Thing is a play about building resilience by finding joy in the everyday things in life. This story offers a life buoy to those of us who have struggled with depression and mental illness as it says

you are not alone. Duncan Macmillan adapted the play from a short story he wrote called “Sleeve Notes.” In both the story and the play, we follow the narrator’s journey to create a list of things that make life worth living after his mother attempts suicide. As a young boy, he wanted to make his mother feel better so the list began when the Narrator was seven with:

1. Ice Cream2. Water Fights3. Staying up past your bedtime and being allowed to watch TV4. The color yellow5. Things with stripes6. Roller coasters7. People falling over

While we acknowledge that this list is not a cure for depression and mental illness, we learn tactics for survival that lift us up and teach us how to begin to talk about our pain with our fellow human beings. Through our

Narrator’s journey, played by incredible Nashville actor Mark Cabus, we learn to open up and be vulnerable with each other. And with our Narrator, we realize that we can and need to laugh about some of the darker things in life. This story is a unique conversation in the theatre with the lights on.

Co-authored by actor/comedian Johnny Donohue, Every Brilliant Thing is told in collaboration with the audience. That means you will be invited to play a character or shout out one of the brilliant things when asked. We invite you to join us as humans who are interested in lifting each other up through story. We ask you to play with us as we explore the pieces of life that bring us together in a common experience: growing up, losing a pet, finding love, losing someone you love and overcoming crushing depression. As Duncan Macmillan says, “You’re not alone, you’re not weird, you will get through it, and you’ve just got to hold on. That’s a very uncool, unfashionable thing for someone to say, but I really mean it.” Thank you for joining us for Every Brilliant Thing and please contribute to our lobby as we craft our own list of things that make life worth living.
