KidLink’s mission is to link kids to healing, hope and happiness through music and media—and our Therapeutic Music Entertainment and Music Therapy direct services, along with our KidLinks.org online resources, truly make a positive difference in the lives of children and families every day. Unfortunately, there are an ever-growing number of kids diagnosed each year with medical, mental and/or behavioral problems. Severe and chronic physical illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, autism, cystic fibrosis, and many others, more than doubled in children from 12.8% in 1994 to 26.6% in 2006 (Reported in 2019 by the Focus for Health Foundation). And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that an approximate total of 17 million kids currently suffer from one or more of these challenges— ADHD, behavior problems, anxiety, and/or depression (March, 2019 statistics). With the support of our donors and grantors, and in collaboration with children’s healthcare professionals, KidLinks is growing to serve more and more of these precious children and families each year.

Hugworks Children’s Network / KidLinks.orgOur Redesigned Online Platform!Hundreds of hours were spent during 2018 designing the “refresh” of our online platform, which was launched on November 15 at the American Music Therapy Association Conference in Dallas.

We had a great time introducing our much-improved, more user-friendly site, which has tremendously improved capabilities for expansion. The Music Therapists we met there from around the world were VERY excited about our new “Community of Practice” section on KidLinks.org. This feature will not only make our MT resources available for use by thousands of Board-Certified Therapists, students and families, but it will soon grow to be a “state-of-best-practices” hub where MT-BC’s, and families with kids receiving music therapy services, will be able to dialogue and share what works and what they need for KidLinks to provide in order to help the children in their care even more!

New Playground - KidLinks.orgOur KidLinks platform is now more accessible and is mobile-friendly. Kids, families, child life specialists, music therapists, teachers & other early childhood professionals will find the new website to be brighter, more readable and lots of fun when accessing our Therapeutic Music Entertainment and Music Therapy resources.

Whether logging on from the hospital, a clinic, at school or home, over 200 songs, animations, instrumental tracks & videos are available free-of-charge, 24-7, and we’re growing our catalog every month!

J.W. BrownPresident and Chairman of the Board

2018 was a big year for KidLinks. With the addition of five new members to our Board of Directors, great progress was made on many fronts.

Jim NewtonFounder & Chief Program Officer

It is no wonder that we love what we have done with and for special kids and families for the past 35+ years! See Paul’s “mission moment” (next page). Our faithful donors and grantors continue to empower our KidLinks team as we bring healing, hope & happiness to children and families.

The new Directors, each seasoned professionals with years of nonprofit experience, added depth to the ongoing management of KidLinks. Through-

out the year, they have individually addressed selected challenges,

and collectively provided great insights on major decisions which elevated the business decisions of KidLinks.

Under the leadership of Diana Crawford,

our CEO, our online platform has been

upgraded, reframed and reloaded for extensive ex-pansion going forward.

The continued efforts of Jim Newton and Paul G. Hill, with their personal appearances at hospitals and children related facilities, and our music therapists Gina, Cora and Bizzy, continue to personally touch the lives of kids, their families and related caregivers every day.

With this leadership and support, our great library of songs and videos continue to be a unique resource for children, their families, caregivers and professionals and enable our primary mission of making a positive impact on the lives of children!

On behalf of all those whom we are honored to serve—THANK YOU!

Stories of children positively impacted by messages created

with the help of Child Life professionals and delivered by our talent-ed therapeutic music entertainers. Stories of

children’s phenomenal achievements due to the

life-changing clinical work of our professional music therapists.

All made possible by the $641,709 (including in-kind) given in 2018 to support KidLinks’ mission to and for children with special challenges. That support enabled us to serve 7,113 children, family members and caregivers, 10-14 kids/week in private music therapy sessions and an additional 14,855

unique visitors to our online platform of music, media and music therapy resources.

To keep up with changing technologies, we took the bold step of revamping our online platform. As a result, we’re no longer Hugworks Children’s Network. We are, simply, KIDLINKS.ORG. You’ll still find your favorite hugworks songs on the KidLinks site but now you’ll also find them on iTunes, Apple Music, YouTube, Spotify—wherever you get your music today! Everything is indexed, searchable and organized in thematic playlists.

2019 will be a year of enhanced services across all our programs, supported by the capabilities now available on KidLinks.org. I’m proud of the accomplishments of our team this year, thrilled for the possibilities ahead and grateful that we could reach each child who smiled, laughed, danced and sometimes cried away their pain and sadness, as a result of the musical services and resources you helped make possible. Thank you!

Diana CrawfordCEO

Each year, I’m touched anew by the stories shared in this Annual Report and all those still left to tell.

As Jim, Larry and I were playing in the Pavilion atrium at Children’s Health, Dallas, many of those passing through on the way to their medical appointments,

smiled in approval of our musical offering. At one point, we slowed the tempo down, and a young lady holding

her mother’s hand stopped in awe of this “band” playing for her. She dropped the grip on her mother’s hand and began floating around in circles, holding her arms out, moving her feet with complete abandon and freedom.

Her mom put her hand to her heart and mouthed the words, “thank you” and wiped a tear away

as they turned to leave. -------

HowWeThrive

I’ve had the honor of working with Hayden Rogers, a stroke survivor, since he was 4-years old. He is now a young man in high school. I truly treasure my music therapy sessions with Hayden. We have worked on many goals over

the years, but last week when his mom Kimberly walked into the room, I asked

Hayden to “show off” and he did. I played the chords on the left

side of the piano while Hayden played a blues improvisation with his

right hand. Kimberly said, “He can do that? Just make it up?” Yes, he can Kimberly, yes he can!

It is impossible to overstate the positive impact KidLinks Volunteers have each year on our mission success! From our Board of Directors & Advisors to the Energy Golf Classic & Symphony of Chefs volunteers to those who shuttle our TME Team to and from the airports for their hospital tours, we could not do without them. As we salute our many great Volunteers for 2018, we highlight three who made our 2018 HUGAPALOOZA! event an unqualified success. We consider all our Volunteers part of the KidLinks family, but our own personal family members and longtime personal friends enjoy pitching in as well. Kenneth Fuquay (Diana Crawford’s husband), Sophie Graham-Newton (Jim Newton’s older daughter) and Larry Whitaker (45+ years of friendship) were standouts! They assisted our staff at the event with setup and organization, welcoming and registering kids and families, serving refreshments, photographing all the fun and generally handling anything that needed to be done to assure a super experience for all in attendance. A BIG THANK YOU to Kenneth, Sophie, Larry and to every one of KidLinks’ dedicated volunteers—your excellent support makes all the difference!
