It is difficult to imagine how the music of Hector Berlioz would have struck his contemporaries. Early on in his career, only a few years after Beethoven, his reputation was made by the ‘Symphonie fantastique’, and we could not celebrate his music and life without including it in our season. We also hear two of his colourful and original overtures, but the centre-piece of the season is his great dramatic work, ‘The Damnation of Faust’. This thrilling and moving portrayal of temptation and redemption must have astounded British audiences when Sir Charles Hallé presented it to them, for the first time, in Manchester in 1880, with this very orchestra. I personally share what must have been his enormous admiration for this great work; the fact that Hallé went on to perform it on fourteen more occasions until his death is proof both of its success and of Sir Charles’s loyal championship of his friend and mentor.

We have set out to match the originality of this orchestral giant with other works equally distinctive in their own terms. Janácek’s ‘Glagolitic Mass’ and Richard Strauss’s incandescent tone-poem ‘Also sprach Zarathustra’ set the tone for a season where we are taken from one landmark of the repertoire to another.

We also encounter Richard Strauss’s unlikely hero Don Quixote, and we are looking forward to getting to grips once more with the visceral energy of Stravinsky’s

‘The Rite of Spring’. This time we pair it with another ground-breaking work carrying as much, however different, emotional force, ‘Verklärte Nacht’, by Schoenberg.

We will hear some of the most important symphonies of the twentieth century: Elgar’s enigmatic and moving Second, Shostakovich’s Tenth, and the Fifth symphonies of Prokofiev, Nielsen and Sibelius. I will also revive a work long associated with the Hallé, the ‘Sinfonia antartica’, whose premiere under Barbirolli inspired Vaughan Williams to write his next symphony for them.

There is more Vaughan Williams, Dvorák, Rachmaninov, Beethoven, Wagner, Sibelius and Shostakovich, and the latest in our series of commissions for Hallé soloists – a trombone concerto by John Casken.

We round off the season with Mahler’s epic ‘Resurrection’ Symphony, his first to bring in voices, solo to begin with, then joined by massed choirs for a blazing finale. There is so much here, brought to you by some of the most distinguished and talented musicians working today; I hope I have whetted your appetite for what is to come. Enjoy the Hallé’s 161st season.

Simon Trpceski returns to our Opus One Series with Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto, one of the greatest of all piano concertos. The work has both heroic bravura and the intimacy of chamber music; its slow movement is a tender musical love letter, its finale a joyous celebration of song and dance. Dvorák’s highly dramatic, and at times tempestuous, Seventh Symphony owes a stylistic debt to his great friend Brahms, yet it is also a distinctly Czech symphony. As Dvorák said during its composition, ‘what is in my mind is Love, God and my country.’ Karl-Heinz Steffens will draw out all its dark-hued grandeur and passion.

Ever since his tenure as the Hallé’s Assistant Conductor, Edward Gardner’s career has gone from strength to strength and he is now an international star. For our opening Thursday Series concert, he returns to conduct an enthralling programme. Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra was inspired by the writings of the philosopher Nietzsche. With its hugely famous ‘sunrise’ opening, it is a glorious example of sumptuous orchestral sound. Janácek’s lean and muscular Glagolitic Mass, a setting of a ninth-century liturgical text, is one of the greatest twentieth-century choral works, a Czech masterpiece that evokes both rawness and purity. Among much else, it will showcase the magnificent Bridgewater Hall organ and the extraordinary Hallé Choir.

Two distinguished Hallé favourites team up to perform what is simply the greatest of all cello concertos. When Brahms heard Dvorák’s masterpiece for the first time he was astonished, saying he wished he could have written it himself. Packed with both melodies and virtuosity, Jian Wang will more than meet its many challenges. The music of Vaughan Williams is something of a specialism for Andrew Manze. He is a superb choice to conduct ‘A London Symphony’, one of the English composer’s most imaginative, evocative and atmospheric creations.

The score of Elgar’s Second Symphony is inscribed with Shelley’s words ‘Rarely, rarely comest thou, Spirit of Delight’. Accordingly, though this great Romantic symphony begins optimistically, the music yields to resignation and deep nostalgia for past times. It is an enigmatic blend of the private and public sides of its composer’s persona and a work of restless and tragic beauty. In the first half, Nicholas Trygstad assumes the role of Don Quixote in Richard Strauss’s take on Cervantes’ classic novel and Timothy Pooley plays Sancho Panza, the Don’s trusty sidekick and the voice of reason. Commotion ensues as ‘the knight of the woeful countenance’ tilts his lance at windmills, assails a flock of sheep and generally gets it wrong! The full drama of Strauss’s ‘Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character’ will be described through surtitles in this highly-anticipated performance.

This heart-warming programme opens with Elgar’s picturesque overture In the South. Written during an Italian holiday it remains one of the composer’s sunniest works for orchestra. Pianist Francesco Piemontesi’s delicate virtuosity is ideally suited to the first of Mendelssohn’s two glittering piano concertos. Then we hear two contrasting preludes from Lohengrin: in the first, strings gliding as serenely as the swan at the heart of the story, and all the energy and tension below the surface in the second. In a glorious climax, Sir Mark guides us through the intimacy and ceremony of Wagner’s great comic masterpiece, Die Meistersinger.

Kazushi Ono, a conductor described by Le Figaro as ‘one of the most fascinating musical minds of our era’, contrasts Viennese fantasy with Russian realism. Schubert’s Rosamunde overture owes a stylistic debt to Beethoven, yet it also contains Schubert’s own personal brand of grace and charm. The incomparable Paul Lewis is soloist in Beethoven’s Second Piano Concerto, a work of ingenuity, lyricism and, ultimately, mischief. Much has been written about Shostakovich’s epic Tenth Symphony: that it took its final shape as a result of the sense of relief occasioned by Stalin’s death; or that its menacing second movement was a portrait of Stalin and the terrors of his regime. Shostakovich simply said that he had ‘wanted to portray human feelings and passions.’ Whatever was meant, it is a remarkably powerful musical journey.

Sir Mark conducts three highly contrasting masterpieces, all composed within just eighteen years of each other and each in its own way hugely influential. Satie’s surreal ballet score Parade is bizarre in the best possible way: its instrumentation includes gun shots, sirens and a typewriter! Verklärte Nacht is a wholly different matter and one of the blazing masterpieces of the Romantic era. For string orchestra this work is a highly melodious affair that expresses Schoenberg’s love for his future wife. Pierre Boulez described Stravinsky’s unleashing of his The Rite of Spring upon a scandalised Parisian public in 1913 as ‘an exemplary moment of modernity’. Over one hundred years later, the composer’s extraordinary evocation of pagan fertility rites fully retains its ability to rouse, to excite and to shock.

December just wouldn’t be the same without Handel’s glorious Messiah. Soon after its first performance in 1742 it was established as a national treasure, before the Victorians made it the rock on which an entire choral tradition was built. Back then, vocal and orchestral forces of literally thousands would perform Messiah – most famously in London’s Crystal Palace – but today, as the Hallé’s performance will show, the taste is for authentic readings, highlighting the dramatic tension of Handel’s famous work. Whether you are a Messiah regular or new to the work, The Bridgewater Hall is the perfect setting for this richly satisfying musical treat.

In recent years Cristian Macelaru has become very much a favourite with Hallé audiences. In these concerts he forms a dream team with the great pianist Lars Vogt. Beethoven’s great concerto is a work of lyricism and humour with a slow movement that has been likened to Orpheus taming the furies! Hans Richter compared Brahms’s Third Symphony to Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ and it certainly has heroic qualities, its moody third movement being a particular highlight that has made its mark in film as well as the concert hall. In his short life, Weber left us a dazzling legacy of operatic and orchestral works; Der Freischütz perhaps the most popular of them all, and certainly the most eloquent, as the Overture reveals.

For this all-Russian programme, Daniele Rustioni, one of the most compelling conductors of his generation, is joined by Francesca Dego for Tchaikovsky’s perennially popular Violin Concerto. It is rich both in melody and finely-crafted virtuoso writing and culminates in a thrilling Cossack dance. After the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, Rachmaninov left Russia, never to return. His Third Symphony is a great work of exile, notable for its profusion of melodies, aching nostalgia and technical brilliance. This enticing concert opens with Glinka’s thrilling and breathtakingly fast overture to his opera Ruslan and Ludmilla.

Representing two distinct sides of the French musical personality, Berlioz and Saint-Saëns make an intriguing combination. Our celebration of Berlioz begins with the overture to his much misunderstood opera Benvenuto Cellini, full of revolutionary zeal. Saint-Saëns lavished on his Fifth Piano Concerto all of his carefully-crafted expertise in melody and orchestration. Written during a vogue for exotic musical influences, it combines his melodic gifts with touches of Java and the Mediterranean. Much of Vaughan Williams’s evocative score to the classic 1948 film Scott of the Antarctic was to re-surface in his seventh symphony, premiered by the Hallé almost exactly 66 years ago. It continues to fascinate audiences with its powerful fusion of symphonic precision and haunting atmosphere.

‘Shakespeare and Goethe: the silent confidants of my torments; they hold the key to my life,’ Berlioz wrote in 1828 when he came to Goethe via a French translation. The Damnation of Faust is central to Berlioz’s creative personality, and Sir Mark Elder has assembled an appropriately stellar cast alongside massed choirs from the Hallé. In Berlioz’s graphic version of the legend, Faust, having sold his soul to Méphistophélès in exchange for eternal youth, is led by the nose through temptation, seduction, betrayal, humiliation and a terrifying ride into his inevitable damnation. Berlioz invested all his incredible talent for narrative in what he described as a ‘kind of opera’. It is more than seventy years since this great work was performed by the Hallé, whose founder did so much for the composer in this country. A rare opportunity to experience this spectacular masterwork is long overdue.

Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony was born in the closing months of the Second World War, yet it captures the optimism and the dynamism of the Soviet industrial age. The composer’s enormous gift for melody and colour is as apparent in this wonderful symphony as in his ballet scores, Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella. Following the successful premiere of John Casken’s Oboe Concerto in 2014, the series of commissions for Hallé wind soloists continues with Madonna of Silence, written for the Hallé’s Principal Trombone, Katy Jones. John Casken’s craftsmanship, musical imagination and mastery of instrumental writing will doubtlessly thrill and inspire. Jamie Phillips, a former Hallé Assistant Conductor, opens proceedings with Mozart’s ebullient ‘Paris’ Symphony.

The Hallé’s Principal Clarinet Sergio Castelló López is soloist in Mozart’s serene concerto. It was written for Anton Stadler, hugely respected despite Mozart’s nickname for him: ‘old redcurrant face’. The concerto was tailored to exploit Stadler’s virtuosity, celebrated singing tone and love of the instrument’s rich lower register. Carlos Miguel Prieto brings his panache to bear on Beethoven’s exhilarating Seventh Symphony, a work described by Wagner as ‘the apotheosis of the dance’. The concert opens with Falla’s remarkably beautiful El amor brujo.

Great voices and a great orchestra come together in an evening filled to the brim with passion, imagination and unforgettable melodies. Acclaimed Italian conductor, Gianluca Marcianò and the Hallé are joined by rising stars Anna Patalong and Jung Soo Yun to bring your favourite operas to life.

Tomás Hanus conductor Winner of the 2018 Leeds International Piano Competition

Czech conductor, Tomáš Hanus, conducts Dvorák’s Scherzo capriccioso, bursting with Bohemian charm. The latest winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition will then take centre stage for Beethoven’s C major Concerto. As in all his early works, the genius has emerged fully-formed, although a deep admiration of Mozart’s piano concertos is evident in this, Beethoven’s First. Shostakovich’s astonishingly assured First Symphony lays out his youthful manifesto of where the symphonic form might go in the twentieth century, with an appreciative nod in the direction of tradition. More than anything, it’s great fun too!

Johannes Debus (Music Director with Canadian Opera for a decade), makes his Hallé debut with Brahms’s colourful variations on Haydn’s ‘St Anthony Chorale’. He is joined by the young piano virtuoso Pavel Kolesnikov, winner of the prestigious Honens Prize 2012 who is also making his Hallé debut, for one of Mozart’s most memorably lyrical and sunny piano concertos. Nielsen’s astonishing Fifth Symphony darkens the mood. The composer saw it as ‘the division of dark and light, the battle between evil and good’. A militaristic side-drum threatens to derail the orchestra before a dawn of hope emerges and eventually triumphs. One of the great symphonies, not to be missed.

Viktoria Mullova makes a welcome return to perform the most popular and most recorded of twentieth-century violin concertos. Sibelius takes us from a mysterious opening to an achingly nostalgic slow movement and a finale once described as ‘a polonaise for polar bears’! Berlioz’s overture Les Francs Juges is a genuine tour de force, with bold brass writing and a catchy, oddly familiar, main theme. Debussy’s haunting Nocturnes paint vivid pictures of nature in Nuages, and riotous partying in Fêtes. After the sensuous Sirènes have worked their magic, we’re ready to take on Ravel’s orchestral masterpiece.

These special concerts celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of our founder, Sir Charles Hallé, on 11 April. As well as being a pianist and conductor, Sir Charles was also a composer and we have a fascinating chance to hear one of his works in an orchestration by C. M. Wagner.

In the first half, after Beethoven’s stirring overture, the orchestra’s hugely talented Assistant Conductor Jonathon Heyward is joined by Heejae Kim, winner of the Terence Judd-Hallé Orchestra prize at the 2015 Leeds International Piano Competition. Her interpretation of Mozart’s lovely G major concerto is hugely anticipated. Sibelius, working on his Fifth Symphony, wrote, ‘It’s as if God the Father had thrown down the tiles of a mosaic from heaven’s floor and asked me to determine what kind of picture it was.’. Though his shifting of the tiles was a long and arduous process, his picture ends in triumph, the swinging phrases of what he called his ‘Swan Hymn’ ringing out in life-affirming fashion.Tickets from £14 (including booking fees)

The BBC Philharmonic is a welcome guest in the Thursday Series due to the Hallé’s appearances in China, and they celebrate three giants of recent British musical history. Sir James MacMillan has enjoyed a long association with the Orchestra, and their performance of his Fourth Symphony marks his 60th birthday year. Sophie Bevan performs in Britten’s Les Illuminations – one of his most enduringly popular works for voice and orchestra. Sir Michael Tippett’s single-movement Fourth Symphony (1977) enjoyed huge success at the hands of Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as the BBC Philharmonic, in the early years of its life.

The rustic Czech mood continues with Simone Lamsma’s interpretation of Dvorák’s Violin Concerto, bursting with typical sunny lyricism and a memorable dancing finale. Our exploration of the music of Berlioz could hardly be complete without his best-known and admired work, full of the passions and dreams, fantasies and phantoms of the most creative mind in French 19th-century music.

Two of the world’s finest artists, Anne Schwanewilms and Alice Coote, join Sir Mark, the orchestra and the Hallé Choir for this truly epic concert. It promises to be an unforgettable experience. The highly dramatic first movement of Mahler’s Second Symphony portrays a superman’s titanic struggle with fate. The second and third movements offer contrast, the text of the latter describing St Anthony’s sermon to the fishes. Then, the orchestra falls silent as the mezzo-soprano soloist enters in magical fashion, the resolute voice of faith. Finally, voices, orchestra and organ combine in what is probably the greatest vision of redemption and re-birth in all music.
