Canteen Corner: Hello from the Canteen!

Our big news for this issue is the

fact we changed our Monthly

Drawing from the 4th Friday of

the month to the 4th Saturday.

We will also have live entertain-

ment that night for all out mem-

bers and their guests to enjoy. If you haven’t been to the canteen in

awhile, you will find that we now

have Keno machines in place. Play

it or get your Lottery tickets while

enjoying a Blue Moon and some chicken tenders with

friends. Our Tuesday Wing Night hours of 5:00-

7:00pm provide ample time for our clamoring fans to

order and devour these tantalizing delicacies. And

breakfast is served as well every Saturday morning

from 7:00 to 10:30am. Come enjoy the “Blue

Bomber”, our “SOS Camper Special” or other

menu items with neighbors and friends. Don’t

forget Monday night drawings, Wednesday Queen

of Hearts, and Friday jukebox night where the mu-

sic is free and the fun level is up to you. The post

is hosting another gun raffle that will be held on

March 24th. Three weapons will be given away to

lucky ticket holders. Tickets are $10. Lastly,

along with our monthly fish fry, the post will host

one every Friday during Lent starting February

16th. The event is open to the public from 5 to 7

pm and costs $8.50.

To use post facilities for

a reunion, wedding re-

ception, or anniversary

etc, call

COMMANDERS COMMENTS:

Over the past holidays, I had

time to reflect on all of the 2017

experiences we’ve shared to-

gether and the cherished memo-

ries of those whom we have

lost. Winter of 2018 is upon us

and it will not be slowing us down. We will continue

our Drawings, Tuesday Wing night, Wednesday Queen

of Hearts, Saturday Breakfast, and our Monthly Fish

Frys. And since our Monthly drawing moved to the

4th Saturday of each month, we will provide live enter-

tainment that night from 8 to 11. We still need volun-

teers to help with our many functions. Only a few

hours a month are needed to ensure we accomplish our

mission and lessen the workload for all. Additionally,

we have recently had several retirements among our

Color Guard volunteers and we are recruiting new team

members from our VFW membership. If you are able to

honor our Veterans as they are laid to rest, please con-

tact Danny Paumier or myself. It is our solemn duty to

pay respect to fallen comrades no matter how long ago

they served their country, and these military funerals

are among our proudest traditions. Thank you and have

a safe 2018. Commander Joe Gillen

Comments: Happy New Year. With the

holiday season over, we need to

get back to business and starting looking

forward to spring. I would like to thank

everyone who helped with the ‘Santa with

Cookies’ event this year. We served the

Shriners on December 21st and had a great

turnout. My thanks for everyone’s help

this year.

I was able to go to Washington DC, for

Wreaths across America on Saturday,

December 16th. I was able to take my

mom (Donna Moore) to lay wreaths on

our fallen heroes at Arlington Ceme-

tery. What a great experience that was

and which we will never forget. We

also visited many historical sites, Lincolns Cottage, Mt. Vernon

(George Washington Estate), Pentagon, and met new friends.

In the next month on the 1st Friday of February, the VFW does

their Fish Fry and the Auxiliary will do a bake sale. So please

come out and support our VFW and your Auxiliary, we all need

to work together. Our District Meeting will be March 11th, at

VFW Post 1388, Buckeye Lake at 10AM. We will have our

election of officers coming up at the April meeting. Our meet-

ings are the fourth (4rd) Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm. I

will miss Januarys due to the Mid-Winter Conference.

To those that have been ill, I wish a speedy recovery, and for

those that have lost a loved one my deepest sympathy.

Loyally,

Susan Stover-Hite, VFW Auxiliary President

Veterans Day at LU

Elementary school! It was another visit to the

school on Veteran’s Day

as we posted the flags

and listened to almost

300 children recite the

pledge and sing the

National Anthem.

This was followed by

patriotic songs and

poems by students and then the introduction of all

the veterans who

showed this day. We

then went over to the

Jr High for their lunch

with a veteran pro-

gram. Here we min-

gled with the 7th-8th

graders enjoying our

chicken tenders and

their company. 7th

grade teacher Marcus

Alford then announced our Post’s Patriot Pen win-

ners. Yes, it was another Veterans’ Day to

remember.

The Blue Plane Post Visitors

come from throughout the State

to visit and take pictures of our

Post’s Icon. This aged Navy

plane’s paint is beginning to fade

and the aircraft is in need of a

cleaning and repairs. Currently, pilots Pat Ferguson

and ?????? are researching methods to restore the

aircraft to it’s original condition. Estimated costs for

this venture is $10,000 of which we already have

pledges for $4,000. If you would like to donate to this

worthy cause, or can help us in this restoration pro-

ject, contact Commander Joe or the canteen manager

at 740-862-4028.
