one point the director and the crew were onthree different boats controlling a flotilla ofother boats. We all had goose bumps.Shooting ten years later on this amazingisland with the same cast, it was a moment. That f---ing song is a moment!”

So where is current Donna in all thisdancing merriment? We can’t say exactly, but Streep definitely appears in the film.“She has a very impactful moment with anamazing song,” teases Craymer. “You feelher presence, and her moment in the filmis just such a celebration of motherhood.”To that end, the film also introduces us toDonna’s mother—and Sophie’s grand-mother—Ruby, played by Cher. The iconwas a fan of the stage musical and was thefilmmaker’s ideal choice to play Donna’ssuperstar-musician mama. “Donna alwaystalked about a mother, and we kind of felt itwas going to be somebody that’s quitemighty,” says Craymer. “She was the dreamfor all of us. She is rock-chick royalty.” AddsSeyfried, “When Ol told me that Cher wasgoing to be in it, I teared up. I didn’t think itcould get better.” The legend drew quite acrowd on her shooting days. RemembersCraymer: “There was a couple of days whenthey were all there—Meryl, Pierce, Colin, and Cher! Colin had his parents there, whoapparently had never visited one of his sets, and Pierce had his mother there. It was likeour own rock concert, really. And everyonewas completely in awe of Cher.” Talk aboutsomething in the air that night. —TIM STACK

GETTING AN ENTIRE CAST BACK TOGETHER FOR A

sequel is always a challenge. In the case ofMamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the follow-up to 2008’s blockbuster musical starringMeryl Streep, booze helped. “It took a whileto work out what it was going to be,” saysproducer Judy Craymer of the film’s plot.“There were all kinds of chats and journeysand airfares and drinks. Meryl is partial to amartini, of which I promised many.”

Based on the enormously popular stagemusical featuring a score composed entirelyof songs by the Swedish pop group ABBA,the original film focused on Greek-islandhotel owner Donna (Streep) dealing withthe arrival of three ex-boyfriends—Sam(Pierce Brosnan), Harry (Colin Firth), andBill (Stellan Skarsgård)—whom her daugh-ter, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), had invitedto her wedding to determine which one washer biological father. Craymer, who also pro-duced the theatrical show, says it took 10years to figure out the story and the songsthat would be used this time around.

Written and directed by Ol Parker (TheBest Exotic Marigold Hotel), the sequelbegins with Sophie living on the island andrenovating her mother’s hotel. “It’s like herpride and joy,” says Seyfried. “It’s every-thing her mother wanted and everything’sgoing wrong.” As opening day approaches,

her mom’s besties, Tanya (Christine Baran-ski) and Rosie (Julie Walters), return tothe island to support her with tales of howDonna came to live in Greece, how she metSophie’s three “dads,” how she opened thehotel, and where she found her prized over-alls. The film flashes back and forthbetween present day and a 22-year-oldDonna (Baby Driver’s Lily James) graduat-ing from college. An unabashed MammaMia! fan, James auditioned by singing thetitle track and “I Have a Dream.” “I went offto the Glastonbury Festival and screamedand danced so hard that I lost my voice, andthe following Monday the producers werelike, ‘You’ve got Mamma Mia! You’re goingto be recording songs from ABBA.’ I waslike, ‘I can’t speak!’ ” To channel Streep,James watched the original over and over.Says the young actress, “I can quote everysingle sentence of that film down to, like,an eyebrow raise.”

While Again features several ABBA songsnot in the original, including “When IKissed the Teacher,” the movie revisitssome of the core hits, like “DancingQueen.” That number has been expandedinto a massive production involving hun-dreds of dancing extras on boats. “It wasepic and ambitious—it’s kind of Dunkirk, really,” says Craymer. Adds Seyfried, “At
