In this keynote, Andy Cohen explores the fundamental assumptions, cognitive biases, and beliefs you wittingly or unwittingly make. He will then show you how to turn those assumptions into opportunities that lead to faster and smarter leadership, operational, and communications decisions.

Stronger Together: How Collaborative Efforts between Primex Members are Paying OffPanel of Member Speakers

As members of a risk pool, each of us have a responsibility to our fellow pool members – we rely oneach other to work safely and responsibly to keep our costs down and further enhance the strengthof the pool. At the same time, we have the enormous privilege of sharing this partnership with our fellow community members, and the valuable opportunity to connect with others in New Hampshire’s municipalities, counties and school districts to draw on our unique set of shared experiences and knowledge. At Primex3, we have seen time and again how we’re stronger when we all work together. This session will feature three Primex3 members in municipal, school and county roles sharing how they’ve collaborated with other members in order to respond to emergencies and to undertake major renovation projects in their communities – achievements that may not have been as successful had each member tried to go it alone. After hearing from each of our panel members, participants will have the opportunity for Q&A. This session will spark some ideas about how participants may start to build partnerships back at home, and begin to break down any perceived barriers and use collaborative efforts to achieve shared community goals.

Public Speaking for Your AudienceSpeakers: Matt Ellis, journalist, author and founder of Ellis Strategies

This program teaches speakers how to identify their core messages so presentations are clearly focused and tailored to their specific audience. We will examine the qualities that make people effective public speakers — focusing on their content as well as their performance. We will review video clips of different speakers to identify their strengths and weaknesses. Attendees will learn how to integrate storytelling into their speeches and presentations and how to context and flavor, not just facts.

Designing for Cyber Security Risk Mitigation and Resilience in the Public SectorSpeaker: Jennifer McArdle, Assistant Professor of Cyber Defense

The rising specter of cyber-attacks against the U.S. homeland has caused the U.S. Intelligence Community to label cyber threats as a top global threat in their 2017 Worldwide Threat Assessment. The U.S. public sector — both the federal and state government — have sought to respond to the rising risks associated with cyberspace by putting in place a diverse range of policy measures. This presentation provides an overview of how the public sector currently designs for cyber security risk mitigation and resilience, and discusses areas for improvement and growth.

Cog Days: A Boy’s Life and One Tragic Summer on Mt. WashingtonJoe McQuaid, Publisher, Union Leader Corporation In more than one sense, Joe McQuaid grew up at the Mt. Washington Cog Railway, working there for four summers in high school and college. His parents dropped him off the first day of the first summer. After a brief bout of homesickness, he never looked back. Based upon his memoir, Cog Days: A Boy’s Life and One Tragic Summer on Mt. Washington.

McQuaid will share the story of life and work and weather and friendships on the highest mountain in the Northeast. He will also tell of one of America’s most-decorated World War II officers, Col. Arthur S. Teague, and how he came back to the Cog to build a life for himself, his family, and eventually thousands of young men and women. McQuaid will recount the “terrible summer’’ of 1967 that forever changed the Cog and its family.

Assessing Future Leaders: Implementing a Character-based Promotional ProcessSpeaker: Kimberly Miller, PhD.Sponsored in part by ANHPEHRA (Association of NH Public Employer Human Resource Administrators

Many promotional processes focus on asking employees to jump through several hoops to demonstrate their suitability for the position and capacity to lead all on one day, rather than assessing the employee’s behavior and history of interactions over time. Additionally, few processes assess the most important aspect of a leader, which is character. Given that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, the majority of promotional processes fail in their ability to identify the best leaders because they don’t have a way to directly assess character. This session will focus on the benefits of running a historically-based promotional process, describe specific components of the process, explain how to directly assess for past behavior, explore defensibility and test fairness, describe how to assess for character in all aspect of the process, and provide examples of exercises and questions that will assist your organization in identifying your next generation of leaders.

Who is in Charge? Me or My Brain?: Exploring the Two Continuums of AggressionSpeaker: Rick VanWickler, Superintendent Cheshire County DOC, Chameleon Consulting

CrimeWare: Motives and MoneySpeakers: Krystal Martin, CPA and Peter Fortunato, CISM, CISA, CISSP, Baker Newman Noyes

In today’s world, Cyber Criminals don’t need technical expertise to breach your organization’s data. They only need a credit card. We will explore how Cyber Criminals are utilizing the Internet

to disrupt your organization. This seminar will offer insights to help you prevent, detect, and defend against these attacks.

Compassion Fatigue and Other Forms of Occupational Stress: What You Need to KnowSpeaker: Deb Pendergast, BA, EFO, AEMT, Director of NH Fire Standards, Training and Emergency Medical Services

In light of the Opioid epidemic that has plagued New Hampshire, there have been some “hidden” consequences to many of our Community professionals. Those affected include emergency dispatchers, Law Enforcement, Firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics, as well as healthcare professionals to include school nurses. We will define and discuss forms of occupational stress focusing on compassion fatigue, a more recently emerging trend. We will look at some of the causes as well as the signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue. The presentation will reveal strategies for coping and building resiliency and most importantly, how to help prevent the development of compassion fatigue as well as other forms of burnout and work stress. Finally, it will be important to understand when and where to seek help if you should find yourself struggling with negative behavioral health effects.

Bias Awareness and Intervention LabSpeaker: PowerPlay Interactive Development, featuring David Kaye and CJ Lewis

This interactive workshop allows participants to take in moments of bias from the perspective of the Bystander and then play Director and Experimenter from the comfort of their chair. The facilitated session allows participants to identify incidents of bias and then build the ability to address those issues in a positive and constructive way.

Observe. Witness our actors portray brief, familiar moments of bias and challenging interpersonal behavior.

Interact. Stop the action. Ask the characters questions about their experience. Dig into what motivates the characters’ behaviors. Uncover human reactions that might be difficult to express in the workplace.

Replay. This is where it gets fun. Offer the characters suggestions about how to navigate these situations more successfully. The actors will replay the scene in real time, utilizing these strategies.

UNH PowerPlay is a professional training and development company who helps organizations improve their work environment by facilitating difficult dialogues about interpersonal behavior.

10:30-11:00 Hotel Check Out

11:00 am Keynote Speaker: Eileen McDargh, Speaker and Author Radical Resilience: Leadership Skills in Changing Times Co-Sponsored by: The NH Association of Fire ChiefsRadically turbulent times demand professional and personal responses that transcend our regular work and life patterns. It’s not about happy faces on mirrors and mantras on coffee mugs. It’s not about hanging on while holding back. It’s about times when you feel someone ate your cheese, drained the swamp, and went from great to less-than-good. Radical resilience requires the courage to challenge, commit, and contribute in ways that positively impact both today as well as many tomorrows.
