What is a Provincial Girl Event?

• There are many different kinds!– Individual Events

• ROAM, Pathfinder Paddles, Mt Assiniboine– Patrol Events

• Guide Jubilee, Mix it up, Trex Rendezvous– Provincially-Sponsored Interprovincial Camps

• SOAR• Yukon 101

• The Provincial International and Program Committees also put on Events for girls, but Camping may not be the focus of these– International Trips– Ranger Revolution, Pathfinder Summit, GUEST, etc.

Mt Assiniboine Backpacking 2018 Event Details

When: July 19 – 26, 2018

Who: 10 girls (Rangers) born between September 1999 and

August 2003.


What:

Eight amazing daysBackpacking the spine of

the Canadian Rockies Experiencing adventure

camping in a world renowned outdoor destination.

Mt Assiniboine Backpacking 2018Event Details

Prerequisites:

Good Physical condition: carry a pack weight 16 kg/35 lbsbackpack a distance up to 16 km in a day

Five nights tenting with Girl Guides of Canadaconsecutive or non-consecutive

Ability to adapt and work co-operatively

Ability to cope with daily adventure camp activities no trace camping, back country cooking


Pre-tripOnce selections are complete the group will participate in pre-trip communication, (eg. email, conference calls) to work on: • travel • menu selection • kit lists• trip planning.

A pre-trip fitness commitment will also be required.


Gear ExpectationAppropriate gear is important for a successful trip

BEG - BORROW - RENT - BUY

Good boots, backpack, sleeping bag, raingear…

Can make or break the experience.


Day 1• Arrive at Calgary Airport

travel to Banff and stay in a hostel, possibly visit to Banff Hot Springs.

• Review trip plan, route, maps, gear, expectations.

• Sort and distribute group gear.


Day 2• Travel by shuttle from Banff to Sunshine Village• Bus from Sunshine to trailhead, 9km• Hike 12.5km to the first campsite at Porcupine campground.


Day 3• Hike 9.5 km and camp at Og Lake


Day 4 , Day 5• Hike 6.7 km to the core of Assiniboine Park.

Options being explored: • Stay a second night • Day hiking in the heart of the park

- Overnight in a Naiset Hut- Heli food resupply


Day 6• Hiking 10.6km towards Mount Shark from Mount Assiniboine.

Camp at Marvel campground.


Day 7• Hike out 15.5km. • Pick up at Mount Shark trailhead

and shuttle to Canmore

• Once in Canmore we will stay in a hostel and have a fabulous meal at a restaurant.


Day 8- Transfer from Canmore to Calgary airport

and onward to home


We will camp in some beautiful locations and see many amazing sunsets


and perhaps see some local wildlife along the way…


We know for sure that we will return from our exciting adventure with lifelong memories, new skills, new friends and great stories…

What to do Next

1. Find your references (ask them early!) – One reference who you know from Guiding– One reference who you know from outside of Guiding– Neither of your references should be family members

2. Complete your forms (previous slide)

3. Send your application, and ensure that your references are sent to Guide House (hard copies) by

Other Important Notes

1. Late applications will not be considered– Applications and/or references date stamped by January 10, 2018 will be

considered on time.– You can drop applications off in person at Guide House by sliding them

through the mail slot.

2. Applicants will be contacted via the email address on their application form (make sure it’s an address that you will check!)

1. We will contact all applicants in late January with one of three outcomes:

– You have been selected– You have been selected as an alternate– You have not been selected this time

Q&A

•Can we email our applications–A: No. Only the references can be emailed at this time

•I went on a trip as a pathfinder, can I go on this one?–A: You can go on a provincially sponsored trip once in each branch. (eg. once as a Guide, once as a Pathfinder, once as a Ranger)

•Does experience camping through Duke of Edinburgh count toward necessary camping experience?

–A: Yes, any relevant camping should be included in the camping log as part of your application.

•When will applicants be notified about selections?–A: Late January or early February

Q&A•For pre camp training what would you suggest us doing? Running, going to the gym?

–A: Best is getting out and hiking with a pack. You can work it into your daily activities by carry around backpack while walking dog or add weight to bag walking to school. Building cardio with biking or other sports is good as is strength if possible.

•What is the most important personal gear to have?–A: Good boots. They are harder to borrow and they can make the difference between a great trip and an unhappy trip
