What is a Provincial Girl Event?

• There are many different kinds!– Individual Events

• ROAM, Pathfinder Paddles, Mt Assiniboine– Patrol Events

• Guide Jubilee, Mix it up, Trex Rendezvous– Provincially-Sponsored Interprovincial Camps

• SOAR• Yukon 101

• The Provincial International and Program Committees also put on Events for girls, but Camping may not be the focus of these– International Trips– Ranger Revolution, Pathfinder Summit, GUEST, etc.

Prerequisites:

Good Physical condition: carry a pack weight 16 kg/35 lbsbackpack a distance up to 16 km in a day

Five nights tenting with Girl Guides of Canadaconsecutive or non-consecutive

Ability to adapt and work co-operatively

Ability to cope with daily adventure camp activities no trace camping, back country cooking

Day 1• Arrive at Calgary Airport

travel to Banff and stay in a hostel, possibly visit to Banff Hot Springs.

• Review trip plan, route, maps, gear, expectations.

• Sort and distribute group gear.

1. Find your references (ask them early!) – One reference who you know from Guiding– One reference who you know from outside of Guiding– Neither of your references should be family members

2. Complete your forms (previous slide)

1. Late applications will not be considered– Applications and/or references date stamped by January 10, 2018 will be

considered on time.– You can drop applications off in person at Guide House by sliding them

through the mail slot.

2. Applicants will be contacted via the email address on their application form (make sure it’s an address that you will check!)

Q&A

•Can we email our applications–A: No. Only the references can be emailed at this time

•I went on a trip as a pathfinder, can I go on this one?–A: You can go on a provincially sponsored trip once in each branch. (eg. once as a Guide, once as a Pathfinder, once as a Ranger)

•Does experience camping through Duke of Edinburgh count toward necessary camping experience?

–A: Yes, any relevant camping should be included in the camping log as part of your application.

•When will applicants be notified about selections?–A: Late January or early February

Q&A•For pre camp training what would you suggest us doing? Running, going to the gym?

–A: Best is getting out and hiking with a pack. You can work it into your daily activities by carry around backpack while walking dog or add weight to bag walking to school. Building cardio with biking or other sports is good as is strength if possible.

•What is the most important personal gear to have?–A: Good boots. They are harder to borrow and they can make the difference between a great trip and an unhappy trip
