Eric Dooley was named Prairie View A&M head football coach on Dec. 22, 2017.

Dooley, the 33rd head coach in program history, joins Panther Football after spending the previous four seasons at Grambling State University as offensive coordinator (2014-17), including one year as quarterbacks coach (2014) and two years as receivers coach (2016-17). Dooley helped the Tigers to three consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division titles (2015-17), two SWAC Championships (2015-16), and an HBCU National Championship (2016). While at GSU, his offenses averaged at least 31 points per game in all four seasons, and ranked first or second in the SWAC in scoring offense each of the last three seasons. In 2016, he was named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Assistant Coach of the Year.

Under Dooley's guidance in 2015,

Grambling ranked fourth in the nation in scoring (41.3 points per game), scored 65 touchdowns, and averaged 470.0 yards per game. The Tigers have produced the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year each of the last three seasons (QB Johnathan Williams 2015, QB Devante Kincade 2016-17). A pair of players during Dooley's tenure are currently in the NFL (2016 free agent WR Chester Rogers – Indianapolis Colts, 2017 third-round draft pick Chad Williams – Arizona Cardinals).

In three seasons as offensive

coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2011-13), the Golden Lions offense improved each year under his direction. In 2011, QB Ben Anderson earned SWAC Freshman of the Year accolades while ranking second in the league in passing offense. In 2012, UAPB set a school record for wins (10), and won its first outright SWAC Championship since 1966 and were crowned HBCU National Champions. During Dooley's tenure, tackle Terron Armstead became a third-round pick by the New Orleans Saints in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Those seven seasons as offensive

coordinator were preceded by 14 years as an assistant coach in various roles at Southern University (1997-2010). In his one season as running backs coach (1997), he helped to produce a pair of

All-SWAC rushers, including SWAC Player of the Year, Steve Wofford. As receivers coach at Southern (1997-2010), he developed the two most prolific receivers in school history (Michael Hayes, Juamorris Stewart).

Dooley played wide receiver at

Grambling under legendary coach Eddie Robinson (1985 – 1988), winning two SWAC Championships. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Southern University New Orleans (1999), and his Master's degree from Southern University Baton Rouge (2005).

His professional playing experience

includes earning a free agent contract with the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders, one year with the AFL's Arizona Rattlers and one year with the World League's Taipei Dragons (China). He also spent time coaching at his alma mater, Alcee Fortier Senior High, as the wide receiver coach, and as offensive coordinator at McMain High School, both in New Orleans, La.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ABOUT DOOLEY:"Eric is a solid citizen. He has

good work habits and has great communications skills. He's very accountable, trustworthy and honest. He'll do a great job of representing Prairie View A&M because he played in the conference and understands the conference. After playing at Grambling, he was associated with some great teams at Southern as an assistant coach, worked his way up through the ranks, and has been involved in some great programs as a coordinator. I think more

than anything else, he understands how to build programs. He's learned really well in terms of order and organization. Also, he's going to demand respect and discipline from his players. The great thing about him is he understands how to recruit. He's a great recruiter, and he understands talent. He's well respected in the coaching profession."

"I want to congratulate Prairie View

A&M University and Mr. Eric Dooley. It's been a long time coming. What a great, great person first of all, a great Godly man, and secondly a great coach. He won the championship with me in 2012, and I truly don't believe we could have won that championship without the work ethic and knowledge that he brought to the table. I've been waiting for teams to call him to be a head coach, and with that opportunity coming at Prairie View A&M, I think he's going to do an outstanding job. I'm very proud of him. I'm very happy for him. I know he's wanted to be a head coach. He now has that opportunity, and I truly believe within my heart he's going to do very well and be very successful at Prairie View A&M. I want to again congratulate Coach Dooley on his promotion, and I will be praying for him."

a personal friend of mine, but he's also a really exceptional football coach and football mind. I want to congratulate him on his new appointment and new opportunity to be the new head football coach at Prairie View A&M. He has a great and loving family, and he's definitely a part of us and we'll definitely miss him. I wish him all the best, and wish him the best of luck in all of his endeavors. We'll always be friends and counterparts. God bless him."

The Panthers' women’s sports program finished second in the Barbara Jacket / Sadie Magee Award for best overall women’s program in the SWAC. All totaled, 13 of PVAMU’s 18 teams posted top three finishes.

FIRST TIME IS SPECIAL HC Eric Dooley faced three first-time head coaches in the first four weeks of the 2018 season. Mike Bloomgren (Rice), Granville Eastman (North Carolina Central), and Cedric Thomas (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) all made their head coaching debuts this season.

CHANGE HAS COME IN THE SWAC HC Eric Dooley is one of five new head coaches in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Dooley will face two of the four new coaches this season (Cedric Thomas, Arkansas-Pine Bluff; Donald Hill-Eley, Alabama St.). The other new SWAC head coaches are Vincent Dancy (Miss. Valley St.), and Connell Maynor (Alabama A&M).

SEVEN PANTHERS SELECTED ALL-CONFERENCE; PVAMU PICKED THIRD IN SWAC WEST

A total of seven Prairie View A&M Panthers earned 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Preseason honors. CB Ju’Anthony Parker (1st team All-SWAC in '17) and OL Corbin Finlayson (2nd team All-SWAC in '17) earned first team honors. RB Dawonya Tucker, OL Roderick Smith, WR Markcus Hardy, TE Zarrian Holcombe, and S Reggie Stubblefield earned second-team honors.

In the SWAC East, defending division champion Alcorn State was picked first, followed by Alabama St., Jackson St., Alabama A&M and Miss. Valley St.

SWAC FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS RETURN TO BIRMINGHAM

The 2018 Toyota SWAC Football Championship returns home to Legion Field, and the Bill Harris Fair Park Arena – located adjacent to the Birmingham Crossplex home of the SWAC Indoor Track and Field Championships -- will host the 2019 SWAC Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament. Legion Field served as the initial site for the SWAC Football Championship from 1999 to 2012.

The Panthers won the 2009 SWAC Championship in Birmingham in a 30-24 win over Alabama A&M.

THREE TEAMS OPENED SEASON AGAINST PANTHERSIn a unique scheduling quirk, PVAMU football will face three teams which will open the season against the Panthers. Prairie View A&M opened the season on Week Zero matchup at Rice. On Labor Day Weekend, North Carolina Central opened its season against the Panthers. Last week, Sam Houston did not play on Week 1, and will play 11 consecutive weeks during the regular season.

PANTHERS CLAIM SWAC'S FOURTH WIN IN MEAC-SWACPrairie View A&M became only the second Southwestern Athletic Conference team to win in the MEAC-SWAC Challenge. The matchup between the only two HBCU Division I Conferences had been won just three times in 14 contests by the SWAC, with Southern winning three times. PVAMU HC Head Coach Eric Dooley was an assistant coach at Southern for wins in 2007 and 2010. The Panthers win evens their record at 1-1. In 2011, Prairie View A&M lost to Bethune-Cookman.

DOOLEY'S CONNECTION TO HISTORY HC Head Coach Eric Dooley was a member of the last SWAC football team to defeat an FBS team, as Grambling defeated Oregon State 23-6 on Sept. 28, 1985 in Shreveport, La. The win tied GSU's legendary coach Eddie Robinson for the most wins in college football history with 323 wins, tying Paul "Bear" Bryant. Ironically, Robinson's Tigers claimed victory 324 against PVAMU the following week in the State Fair Classic.

In the last three years, Dooley has twice been on the sidelines nearly rewriting history. On Sept. 10, 2016 as offensive coordinator, Grambling led 21-3 in the first half before losing at Arizona 31-21. In his first game as head coach, Dooley's Panthers led FBS foe Rice 28-19 before losing on the last play, 31-28.

PRIMETIME PANTHERS PVAMU football has been primetime viewing in 2018, as nine of the 11 regular season games will be televised or video streamed live.

The first three games were shown on the ESPN Networks. Contests at Rice and Sam Houston were on ESPN+, and the game vs. North Carolina Central in the MEAC-SWAC Challenge was televised live on ESPN2. The final non-conference game at UNLV was video streamed on the Mountain West Network.

The Oct. 13 game vs. Southern and this week's game at Jackson State are on ESPN3.com. The remaining home games vs. Alcorn St. (Oct. 27), Alabama St. (Nov. 17), and Texas Southern (Nov. 24) will be streamed at pvpanthers.com.

PVAMU MARCHING STORM ON NATIONAL STAGE AT THANKSGIVING PARADE, BATTLE OF THE BANDS

Prairie View A&M University was again on the national stage as the Marching Storm Band opened and performed at the 2017 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. PVAMU was one of only two college bands (Ohio) that performed in New York City.

The band was also one of only eight selected to perform at the Honda Battle of the Bands in Atlanta in January at Mercedes Benz Stadium.

Panther Stadium - A NEW ERA IN PRAIRIE VIEW A&M FOOTBALLAn exciting new chapter in the history of Prairie View A&M University football opened Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016 as Panther Stadium at Blackshear Field opened with a come-from-behind win over Texas Southern before a sold-out crowd and national television audience on ESPNU. The new 15,000-seat stadium, along with the 55,000-square feet Athletics Administration Building, was built on the hallowed ground of the original Blackshear Field. The original facility hosted Panther football and track teams from 1948 – 2014. PVAMU football won 11 SWAC titles and five Black College National Championships during that time. The Panthers won the first three games in the new venue, all in come-from-behind fashion, and are 6-4 at Panther Stadium.

HOUSTON – The Prairie View A&M University football team lost on the final play of the game at Rice, falling 31-28 at Rice Stadium.

Quarterback Jalen Morton completed 16 of 28 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed 12 times for 53 yards. WR Tristen Wallace caught five passes for 157 yards and a touchdown to lead all receivers. RB Dawonya Tucker rushed 10 times or 73 yards while catching two passes for nine yards.

Trailing 16-0 in the second quarter, the Panthers’ offense found its groove scoring touchdowns on four consecutive possessions. PVAMU got on the board with a six-play, 75-yard drive, ending in Zarrian Holcombe’s 20-yard touchdown catch cut the deficit to 16-7 with just over nine minutes to play in the first half.

Following a Rice field goal, the Panthers drove 69 yards in seven plays. Jose Medrano’s first career touchdown catch from two yards out cut the deficit to 19-14 with less than two minutes to play until halftime.

The Prairie View A&M defense forced a three-and-out before the offense scored again. A six-play, 69-yard drive ended with Wallace’s 20-yard scoring pass to give PVAMU its first lead of the season at 21-19 just before halftime.

On the first possession of the second half, the Panthers extended its lead. An eight-play, 94-yard drive ended with Bernard Goodwater’s 27-yard scoring run on his only carry of the game to give Prairie View A&M its largest lead of the game, 28-19, with just over eight minutes to play in the third quarter.

Rice scored the final 12 points of the game in the fourth quarter, including a 23-yard field goal on the final play of the game, for the final margin.

ATLANTA – The Prairie View A&M University football team defeated North Carolina Central 40-24 to win the 14th MEAC-SWAC Challenge at Georgia State Stadium.

The Panthers (1-1) jumped out to a 20-0 first-quarter lead, withstood a determined NCCU comeback, and then pulled away late for the victory. Prairie View A&M joins Southern as the only SWAC teams to win the Challenge.

Jalen Morton ran for a 14-yard touchdown on the opening drive, then threw 15 yards to Markcus Hardy for a score on the second possession for an early 14-0 led less than six minutes into the game.

Caleb Broach’s 15-yard scoring run just before the quarter ended gave PVAMU the big early lead.

As the Panthers were limited to field goals in the second and third periods, North Carolina Central cut the lead two points on two different occasions, the last time at 26-24 with just over 11 minutes remaining.

Prairie View A&M never lost the lead and sealed the win with two fourth-quarter touchdowns. An 82-yard, seven play drive ended with the second Morton-to-Hardy TD connection, this time from 20 yards out for a 33-24 lead with just under nine minutes to play.

Ju’Anthony Parker’s interception and 16-yard return to midfield set up Dawonya Tucker’s 50-yard touchdown run with just over six minutes remaining for the final margin.

RB Dawonya Tucker posted his second straight 200-yard rushing game, rushing 21 times for a career—high 245 yards and two touchdowns.

The game was delayed approximately 35 minutes late in the first quarter due to lightning.

Tucker scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 14-yard run to take a 9-3 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the first quarter.

Following consecutive touchdowns by Sam Houston to put the Bearkats ahead 17-9, Prairie View A&M scored back-to-back touchdowns of its own. Jaylen Harris returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit to one. On the next offensive series, Tucker scored on a 25-yard run to put PVAMU ahead 23-17 with just over six minutes to play in the first half.

Zach Elder’s 27-yard field goal cut the PVAMU deficit to 34-26 less than two minutes into the final period before the Panthers scored a touchdown on their next offensive possession. A six-play, 73-yard drive ended with a 40-yard scoring pass from Morton to Zarrian Holcombe with 9:04 remaining, but the two-point conversion try was ruled incomplete.

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – QB Jalen Morton had a record-setting game in a record-setting night for Prairie View A&M football in a 62-13 win at Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Morton accounted for 511 yards and six touchdowns as he set a single-game school record with 255 rushing yards, and tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns. Morton broke John Payton’s 64-year old school record of 253 rushing yards set in 1953. It was the fourth time in school history a Panther player rushed for four touchdowns (Ed Price 1952; Payton 1954; Archie Seals 1958).

The Panthers (2-3 overall, 1-0 SWAC) set a school record with 815 total yards, breaking the previous mark of 772 yards in a 62-59 double overtime loss at Southern on Sept. 14, 2013.

RB Dawonya Tucker, who entered the weekend as the leading rusher in Division I (both FBS and FCS), had his third 100+ yard rushing game of the season with 11 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown.

PVAMU exploded for 35 first-quarter points. It took the Panthers only 10 plays to score four touchdowns:• Morton scored on a career-long 89-yard run on the second play of the game.• On the next snap from scrimmage following a UAPB field goal, Morton connected with TE Zarrian Holcombe on a career-long 75-yard scoring pass.• Morton’s 37-yard scoring run ended a three-play, 83-yard drive.• Following a fumble recovery by Jason Dumas, a Morton-to-Markcus Hardy 6-yard scoring pass ended a four-play, 29-yard drive for a 28-3 lead with 6:54 to play in the first quarter.

Caleb Broach’s nine-yard scoring run ended a seven-play, 84-yard drive for 35-3 lead after one quarter.

Tucker (24 yards) and Morton (1 yard) had scoring runs sandwiched around an Arkansas-Pine Bluff touchdown as the Panthers led 49-10 at halftime.

Following a 40-yard punt return by Ju’Anthony Parker, Morton ended a 48-yard drive with his rush into history. His 21-yard scoring run set the school record for rushing yards in a game and tied the school record for rushing touchdowns in a game.

In the fourth quarter, Trazon Connley connected with Kaleb O’Bryant on an 88-yard scoring pass for the final Panthers, who had their highest-point total since a 67-12 win over Allen in 1959.

DALLAS – The Prairie View A&M University football team led from start to finish in defeating Grambling 22-16 in the 93rd State Fair Classic.

The Panthers (3-3 overall, 2-0 SWAC) defeated Grambling (1-3, 1-1) for the first time since 2013 as well as ending the Tigers’ 26-game Southwestern Athletic Conference winning streak, which began in 2015.

Jalen Morton completed 23-of-34 passes for 269 yards with three touchdowns and one interception and also rushed 13 times for 62 yards. Dawonya Tucker, the leading rusher in all of Division I football, rushed 19 times for 72 yards and also caught three passes for 89 yards and a touchdown.

The Panthers’ defense kept Grambling out of the end zone until the fourth quarter, registering 10 sacks, including three by DE Willie Green. After the Tigers scored on back-to-back drives in the fourth quarter, and recovered an on-side kick, Prairie View A&M CB Ju’Anthony Parker’s interception with 1:42 remaining sealed the win.

Prairie View A&M scored touchdowns on back-to-back possessions in the first quarter less than three minutes apart. Morton completed the first scoring drive with a short pass to Markcus Hardy, who outleaped a Grambling defender, then shook off another tackle on a 38-yard scoring pass on the far sideline to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead with 4:20 to play in the opening quarter.

On the second play of the next Panthers’ drive, Morton flipped a screen pass to Tucker, who got a big block from OL Christian Rice and then maneuvered through the Grambling defense on an 80-yard scoring play for a 12-0 lead with 1:33 to play in the first quarter.

A Zach Elder field goal extended the PVAMU lead to 15-0 with 6:31 to play in the second quarter, as a late Grambling safety gave the Panthers a 15-2 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, a nine-play, 61-yard drive ended with a four-yard scoring pass from Morton to Zarrian Holcombe to give Prairie View A&M its largest lead of the night at 22-2 with just over four minutes to play in the third quarter, setting up the dramatic fourth-quarter finish.
