2018 Oliver Hill/Samuel Tucker Pre-Law InstituteWe are now accepting applications for the 2018 Oliver Hill/Samuel Tucker Pre-Law Institute (“Institute”). The Institute is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and positive introduction to the judicial system, and was birthed from a recognized need for diversity in the legal profession. The Institute targets future lawyers at an early age and provides them with exposure and opportunity to explore the legal profession, all at no cost to the participants. The Institute is open to rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.The Institute is held annually in Richmond, Virginia. This year, it will be held from July 8, 2018, to July 13, 2018, at the University of Richmond. We have attached the application packet to this email. About the Program:

The program gives young women a comprehensive look at engineering fields and at UVA’sengineering curriculum through informative speakers and hands-on design activities. 2018 National Youth Science Camp (NYSC)

The National Youth Science Camp (NYSC) is a broad science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) experience that incorporates creative and performing arts as well as outdoor experience in an intense month-long camp for young scientists. In a rustic setting in West Virginia, students from around the country are challenged academically in exciting lectures and hands-on studies on current STEM topics. The intense month-long program also offers participants the opportunity to experience a wide variety of outdoor activities that have minimal

impact on the environment and are challenging for the experienced but accessible to those who have never participated in outdoor excursions. The NYSC is an all-expenses-paid program. The National Youth Science Foundation will arrange round trip transportation from an airport near the delegate’s home to Charleston, West Virginia.

Two students will be chosen to represent Virginia as delegates to the National Youth Science Camp. Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

● must be candidates for high school graduation between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018;

● must be able to attend the entire NYSC program in Charleston, West Virginia, tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, June 27, 2018, and depart on Saturday, July 21, 2018;

● must demonstrate superior academic proficiency, including recognition in science, technology, engineering, and/or mathematics;

● must demonstrate an application of leadership abilities and social maturity through involvement in school and community activities;

● must demonstrate skills and achievements outside the realm of science and outside the realm of academic pursuits;

● must demonstrate a curiosity and an eagerness to explore many and varied topics; and

● must intend to pursue higher education and a career in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics related field.

Information about the National Youth Science Camp and an application may be obtained at the National Youth Science Camp website. The application must be submitted through the NYSC website by February 28, 2018.

Applications will be reviewed by an expert panel based on the criteria required in the application. Applicants will be notified by March 31, 2018, regarding their selection status for the 2018 National Youth Science Camp.

The Ingevity Scholarship, funded by the Ingevity Corporation, is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors each year. Students are recognized for their outstanding leadership and their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. Five scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to qualifying students. Of the five, one scholarship will be awarded to the child of an Ingevity employee, one scholarship will be awarded to an external candidate in a STEM related field and the remaining scholarships are open to all qualifying students. A panel of community leaders will evaluate the applications and determine the scholarship recipients.

A Complete Application* Consists of:

2. Student’s Transcript

3. Letter(s) of Recommendation from non-family members (maximum of three letters)

Applicants must be:

● Current high school senior anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application;

Applicant must be a descendent of a Jefferson School Graduate, B average, graduate in 2018 and have an acceptance letter and copy of transcript.

Deadline is April 2, 2018 to give to Ms. Howell

The Blue Ridge Council of Teachers of Mathematics scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a senior planning on entering the field of mathematics education. It is $500 and is renewable for 3 years (a total of $2000) provided the student continues in mathematics education and is a student in good standing.

Virginia Society of CPAs (VSCPA) Educational Foundation scholarship

application is open through Sunday, April 1. I hope you will remind your students that we are offering over $50,000 in scholarships to accounting students.

Annual Track Meet Scholarship Program

This year The Cosmopolitan Club of Roanoke will award two $3,500 scholarships to a Senior High School male and a Senior High School female Cosmopolitan Track Meet participant that is pursuing further education after graduation. The scholarship proceeds are intended to be used exclusively for tuition expenses.

The Cosmopolitan Club is an international service club and will consider each applicant’s record of service in awarding the scholarships. Financial need is not a consideration. Please refer to the procedure and eligibility requirements for further information. Deadline is April 5, 2018.

Alleghany Retired Teachers Association Scholarship

The primary requirement is that the applicant be planning to attend college to prepare for a career is education-teacher, counselor, librarian or related area. We do expect the recipients of this scholarship to attend the May 1, 2018 ARTA meeting.

2018 Granville P. Meade Scholarship

The Virginia Department of Education is announcing the Granville P. Meade Scholarship that provides financial assistance to students who have achieved academically, but who are financially unable to attend college. The Granville P. Meade fund awards scholarships to eligible Virginia high school seniors to attend one of Virginia's public or private colleges or universities. Additional information about thee scholarship is in Attachment A-This is a Word document. (Word) and Attachment BThis is a Word document. (Word) contains the scholarship application.

It is anticipated that the scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $2,000 per year for four years, provided the student continues to meet the scholarship requirements.

Jackson River Community Credit Union will provide a $500 scholarship to a credit union member (at least 6 months), high school senior entering college or university and demonstrates a financial need for grand. Academic merit and social contributions to school and community will also be evaluated.

William Earehart Memorial Scholarship

T h e Virginia Aviation Business Association is the sponsor of the annual Charles J. Colgan Scholarship. We provide an award in the amount of $2,000 (Two Thousand Dollars), to a well deserving Virginia resident High School, student who is pursuing an aviation or aerospace related career at an accredited institution. The scholarship will be paid directly to the institution in the name of the awardee.Complete and sign the VABA Scholarship application form.

Universal Retirement Scholarship is offering a $1,000 Scholarship for the 2018-2019 school year.

Applicant Eligibility Requirements:

· Open to high school seniors and college undergraduate or graduate students who live in the United States

· Student must enroll in college or graduate school beginning no later than Fall 2018

SGT Shawn M. Dunkin Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is to honor the memory and sacrifices of Sgt. Shawn M. Dunkin, US Army. The requirement is for

seniors enrolling in any post secondary accredited school having a least a one year certification program. GPA of 2.5 or higher and 200 word essay.

Deadline Must be submitted to Ms. Howell by April 15, 2018

Event Zone- Scholarship For the Arts

APPLICANT MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

· High school seniors whose parents’ or guardians’ permanent residence is within a 100-mile radius of Roanoke. Applicant must have been accepted, or expect acceptance into a post-secondary educational arts program for the 2018 fall semester as a full-time student. (See listing below.)

● Planning further study with a MINOR or MAJOR in the fine arts: MUSIC, DANCE, THEATRE, SCULPTURE, PAINTING, PHOTOGRAPHY, DRAWING. (No graphic/computer art majors please.)

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application deadline is April 13, 2018.

NOTE: Prior winners of EventZone Scholarships are not eligible.

The application must be accompanied by the following:

1. A maximum of two recommendations, one of which must be from a teacher, instructor or other professional in the arts. The recommendation should include at least the following information:

a. What is the student’s potential for future creative expression?

b. What is the student’s level of performance up to this point in their career?

c. Does student work at “expected” level or work beyond requested level?

d. Does student complete work in a timely fashion or if not, why?

e. Your perception of the student’s artistic ability.

2. Student must submit examples of their work in their area of art. These may

include DVDs, CDs, photos or actual drawings, or paintings. Choose examples that make you stand out as an applicant!

- Lists of stage performances are accepted, but please also include at least one sample of your performance in video, sound or picture form.

- Limit submissions to ten pieces of work or photos. Each piece of work must be labeled with the applicant’s name (including each photo).

- Videos should include five minutes of recent work and recorded on clean, high-quality CDs.

- In a crowded scene in a video or picture, please identify yourself.

- All pictures should be marked in order and accompanied by a sheet that lists the size and title of the work. All art work should be dated and identified and noted if it was a class project, etc. All work submitted must be the original or a photo of it - no computer print outs.

- Computer generated or enhanced work will not be reviewed.

- Standard size DVDs can be used for paintings, sculpture and other artwork. If you are submitting a DVD of art pieces, please label, in order, both on DVD and in an attached document.

- Please email [email protected] if you have videos or pictures you can send online.

3. Musicians submitting original compositions must submit both the written score and a recording of the

music stating who is performing the piece. The composer does not have to be performing the music unless he/ she wants to be judged as both a performer and composer. All musicians please submit two contrasting musical pieces, one of which should be a “live” performance (i.e. recital).

4. Past applicants to this scholarship who have not won in any category may submit a new application.

Works previously judged for this scholarship must not be included in the new application.

5. Proof of full time acceptance into a college, institute or apprenticeship program in the Arts will be

required prior to award of the scholarship funds.

6. High School transcripts are not necessary and will not be taken into consideration.

Rich Murray Journalism Scholarship 2017-18

The Rich Murray Journalism Scholarship is presented annually to a graduating Virginia high school student who excels in the area of sports journalism and must be pursuing a college degree in journalism, communication, video, media or a related field with intentions of pursuing a career in sports. DELTA KAPPA GAMMA ALPHA BETA CHAPTER is offering a $500.00 stipend to a female student at Alleghany High School, Bath County High School, and Covington High School. Any graduating female is eligible to apply providing the following stipulations are met:

The female student must be interested in furthering her education with a career goal in the education profession. This may include the areas of teaching, counseling, administration, media specialist, or any other new field that may become a part of the public or private educational systems. The female student has demonstrated academic promise with a B or higher grade point average. The female student has participated in extracurricular and/or community activities. The female student is a person of good character.The female student has exhibited some leadership ability.

This application must be submitted to your guidance counselor no later than March 13, 2018. Your guidance counselor will mail the applications to the selection committee. You will be notified before April 30, 2018, because the chapter honors the recipients and their mothers at the May meeting.

High School Senior who will matriculate full-time at a US accredited four-year college or university within the fifty states or District of Columbia.

Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participating in community services or other extra curricular activities.

Combined adjusted income of the parent(s) cannot exceed $50,000.

II. Required Documentation

Application- Each candidate must submit a complete and timely application. An application will be considered incomplete and not processed if all instructions have

The staff of the JMSMSF will not accept any application packet or portion thereof that is filled out with a pencil. Application and required documents should be neat and easy to read. Official Transcript- An official copy of the applicant’s high school transcript provided by the high school staff in a sealed envelope must be included in the application packet. Submission of an application along with the required documents for this scholarship constitutes your authorization for the JMSMSF Scholarship Selection Committee to review your academic record.

1. Financial Document – The submission packet must include a copy of the applicant’s Student Aid Report (consists of three to four pages) from the Department of Education or FAFSA. If applicant can’t obtain any one of these reports, the applicant can submit a copy of the parent’s income tax return (Submit only the front and back of the IRS Form 1040 or IRS Form 1040 EZ) for the year prior to the year in which the application packets are due. (WILL NOT ACCEPT INCOME TAX RETURNS OF ANY OTHER YEARS). For example, you should submit your parent’s income tax return for tax year 2015 in the application submission packet due on/or before March 31, 2016.

High School Senior Picture - A high school senior picture or a picture taken above the waistline and in color. The picture must be an original or printed on official photo paper. Do not submit any picture taken at an angle. Applicant is required to

print his/her full name on the reverse-side of the picture.

Essay – Each candidate must provide a 500-1000 word essay focusing on “Describing his or her planned undergraduate study and how he or she plans to apply it upon graduation” or “Who is your role-model and how he or she has influenced/impacted your life”. The individual cannot be a relative. Essay technical requirements: double space, 11 point font size, one inch margin on all sides, submit original only, submit in English, and certify authorship/originality at the end of the essay. The essay will be evaluated on originality, content, thought provoking ideas, innovation, and concepts previously unpublished. Applicant must certify the authenticity of the writing at the end of the essay by affixing the below statement and then signing beneath it.

The Society of the Cincinnati in the State of VirginiaHistory Essay Contest for College ScholarshipEligibility - any high school graduating senior who plans to attend a 4 year college or university in Virginia.Essay Topic- Each year the essay is about a historical document that played an important role in the establishment of our nation. Past essay topics have included such documents as the Virginia Declaration of Religious Freedom, the United States Constitution and the Virginia Statute for Declaration of Independence. Theis year’s topic will be the Westmoreland Resolutions.The essay should be written for the benefit of someone who has never studied the Westmoreland Resolutions. The essay should address the ideas in the document that were important to Americans during the latter half of the 18th century and should explain why these ideas remain important today. Deadline is March 16, 2018.
