Brook. Her career has spanned four decades, with the first ten years

spent in medical, surgical and critical care nursing. With over twenty years’ experience in

addiction and psychiatric nursing, she is a recognized expert on the issue of substance use

disorders in nurses. Author of “Unbecoming A Nurse” and “From Unbecoming A Nurse to

Overcoming Addiction,” she has served as Vice President for the Foundation for Addiction Nursing

(FAN) and on the Nurse Advisory Panel for the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance

Abuse Services.

“Addiction & Recovery in Nurses”: Lack of education regarding substance use disorders

has been identified as one of four major risk factors nurses face in developing an issue with

substances. Since a majority of disciplinary actions against nurses are due to the use of mood-

altering substances and any health-care professional can succumb to this problem, this issue will

be explored in depth. At the end of the SALPN 2017 Professional Development Day attendees will

be able to:

1. Describe the prevalence of problematic substance use in nursing professionals.

2. Identify 4 personal risk factors & 4 professional risk factors that moderate the risk of a nurse

acquiring a substance use disorder.

3. Identify 2 proactive responses to initiate if suspicions of problematic substance use surface in

yourself, a loved one or colleague.

4. Describe 2 strategies that can be initiated to decrease substance use disorders in nurses.

5. Identify 2 negative impacts shame & stigma have on nurses who have a substance use

disorder.

CEP CARRY OVER BYLAW:

Upon review of the member proposed resolution (2017 AGM), it was determined the current wording of the bylaws related to carry-over of CEP hours is overly complex. The SALPN Council will be proposing a bylaw change at the 2018 AGM to allow for carry-over hours, up to 8 hours, be applied in the

category in which they were obtained.

The SALPN will be relocating prior to January 1st, 2018 to 2208 Victoria Avenue East, Regina. The

new space was leased in shell condition and the interior is currently under construction. The space

will be larger and support growth of the organization and has been designed with efficiency and

protection of confidential information as priorities. All costs related to the development of the office

will be funded with the reserves established by SALPN and will not require financing.

The health and wellness of our staff, Council and visitors are important to us. The current location

continues to pose both environmental and health risks to those in the building. With those

considerations and the ongoing financial uncertainty of the building owner, the SALPN is confident

that our future relocation is in the best interest of the organization. We look forward to serving the

public and welcoming LPNs and Stakeholders to our new location.

Stay tuned for further updates

SALPN AWARDS

The SALPN is committed to excellence in the regulation of Licensed Practical Nurses in Saskatchewan.

One of the strategic themes of the SALPN is to improve public protection with a distinct focus on

regulatory practices. A regulatory mandate does not include work that can be perceived as

advocating for the LPN profession. This involves an assessment of all functions of the SALPN for

appropriateness within a regulatory mandate.

Recently, the SALPN Council engaged in a discussion regarding the current awards program. It was

determined that the SALPN managing and funding an awards program may be seen as promoting the

professional interests of its members and harmful to the integrity of the LPN profession. The cost of

regulating the profession is increasing exponentially due to the number of and complexity of

complaints. Costs associated with hosting the conference and awards banquet are substantial. The

event cost exceeds the event revenues. Therefore, a motion was made to discontinue the current awards program and banquet.

It is recognized the LPN profession is integral to the delivery of safe

nursing care in Saskatchewan. This decision is not intended to

discredit the continued contributions LPNs make to Saskatchewan

health care. SALPN’s contribution to the delivery of quality

healthcare in Saskatchewan is to protect the public through

regulation of the Licensed Practical Nurse profession in

Saskatchewan.

IV INITIATION

The Ministry of Health has passed the Regulatory Bylaws that were approved by the membership at

the 2016 Annual General Meeting. To maintain licensure, Licensed Practical Nurses practicing in

Saskatchewan must complete an IV initiation course by December 1st, 2018.

IV initiation was incorporated into the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Practical Nursing basic program in

2006. Therefore, LPNs graduating in Saskatchewan from 2008 onwards will have completed the

necessary education. Saskatchewan Polytechnic Continuing Education Department offers the

required course titled “NRSG 254 IV Therapy/Blood and Blood Products”. The next intakes for NURS

254 are:

• October 23rd, 2017-December 15th, 2017

• January 8th, 2018-March 2nd, 2018

• March 5th, 2018-April 27th, 2018

• April 30th, 2018-June 22nd, 2018

For information on this course, please contact Saskatchewan Polytechnic

Continuing Education Department 1-866-467-4278 or click on the following link:

http://saskpolytech.ca/programs-and-courses/part-time-studies/a-z-listing.aspx

The SALPN will accept IV initiation/therapy courses that are deemed equivalent

to the Saskatchewan Polytechnic course.

If you are uncertain if you have this competency, please logon to your member

profile, click on ‘view your profile’, then view additional skills under ‘current

registration’. If you have taken this education and this is not listed on your

member profile, please submit your certificate of completion to

SIHL SCHOLARSHIP

The Saskatchewan Institute of Health Leadership (SIHL), brings together healthcare professionals from all disciplines and all levels to foster leadership potential, skills and the creation of a leadership community that works together to promote, support and sustain good health. SALPN supports SIHL’s education and awards scholarships to those who apply with the SIHL Application Form and a commitment to return for service, which may include running for SALPN Council, SALPN committees, presenting at a SALPN event, etc. Bonnie Marko, an LPN who was granted a scholarship and graduated from SIHL, shares her experience below.

For more information please visit, http://salpn.com/salpn/other/sihl-scholarship or email [email protected]

“My name is Bonnie Marko, and I am one of the LPN’s that participated in the Saskatchewan Institute of Health Leadership Program. I was granted a scholarship from SALPN, for the 2016-2107 program. I am very thankful and appreciative for this amazing and enlightening experience. This is an opportunity that I personally, think all healthcare providers should take part in. This has been an asset to my personal and professional life. The course includes an in-class retreat, an individual and group project.

Initially, I attended an in-class retreat at the First Nations University at the University of Regina campus. As a class, we participated in many activities, lessons and group discussions that targeted leadership and professional development. We also organized for our individual and group projects at this time.

Through the six-month course, I took part in a personal project. The individual assignment was ongoing and I completed an action plan to address a key issue I would face. It allowed me to address long term and short-term goals. Through this process it enabled me to step out of my comfort zone, and build my personal and professional relationships.

I also took part in a group project as part of the program. The purpose of the group project was to work collaboratively with other health care professionals on a challenge within the Saskatchewan health system. It also was required to develop leadership skills through transformative change. Through this process it enabled me to work with different personalities and strengthen my collaboration and communication skills. At the closing retreat, we presented this project to a series of Healthcare Professionals from various areas in Saskatchewan.

The SIHL program was definitely mandatory for my career as an LPN. I continue to utilize the tools that I have been given on a daily basis personally and professionally. After completing my leadership journey and developing my desired leadership style I feel more confident in my profession. The program has allowed me to advance and guide others within the healthcare field.”
