The 14th annual Kentokukan Fall Classic took place on November 10th, 2018, at LaurenHill

Academy Junior Campus in the Montreal borough of St-Laurent, Quebec. A total of 98 participants

from 11 dojo were present at the tournament, a small increase from 90 participants in 2017, in spite

of multiple closed roads due to construction in the metropolitan area.

The event officially began at 9:50am with seiretsu, the formal opening ceremony, led by the

Kentokukan Master of Arms, Sensei David Harris (4th Dan). Then, as customary, the senior

yudansha and the dojo sensei were introduced by the MC, Sempai Jason Bensimohn (3rd Dan).

At 10am, the group photo was taken, followed by a warm-up for the competitors, led by Junior

Shodan Elijah Ryans, Sempai Anjali Chidam and Sempai Canaan Harris.

Shinan Wayne Donivan (9th Dan, Doshu and Founder) set the tone of the competition with his own

masterful kata presentation, Kentokukan No Kosoku, delighting the audience and inspiring

competitors and officials alike.

Keeping up with the new formula introduced in 2017, the competition began with the black belt

competitors. From 10:30 to 11:10am, five young yudansha competed in the central shiaijo,

capturing the attention of all the other participants, demonstrating their skill in kata and their

fighting spirit in shiai.

At 11:10am, the yukyusha competition began. The competition was run efficiently and smoothly,

and by 14:30, all 16 kata groups and 15 shiai groups had finished competing.

It was time to close the event and seiretsu was again called by the master of arms. But there was

one final part to the program: special prizes. A symbolic token of gratitude was offered to all center

referees. Then Shihan Mastrocola, the tournament organizer, announced the winners for grand

prizes:

• The Trophy for Outstanding Karateka was

awarded to Alexandre Lavoie for his remarkable

fighting spirit.

• The Kentokukan Cup for Outstanding Dojo was

awarded to Shindo Budo Kwai Sherbrooke. The

trophy was presented by the Sun Youth

representative, Jonathan Caisse, and gracefully

accepted by Sensei Larry Foisy.

• The Sensei Stewart Hersey Memorial Trophy

for Outstanding Referee was awarded to Sensei

Steve Morin.

• The dojo having most “heavily” contributed to

the food drive (non-perishable food to the

benefit of Sun Youth) for the second

consecutive year was Seishinkan Dojo, led by

Shihan Filippelli, with 183kg collected. Other

dojo had also generously contributed to the

cause, notably Hibö No Hoshi Kai Dojo with

101kg and Kazoku Kai Dojo with 83.3kg.

So ended the 2018 Kentokukan Fall Classic Junior Tournament, without incidents, thanks to the

organization’s nurtured attention to safety and respect. After the event, a dinner gathering was held

at Fu Lam Buffet, to allow participants, officials and volunteers to relax, socialize and reflect on a

job well performed.
