UNIVERSITY OF MONTANAGRIZZLY FOOTBALLNATIONAL CHAMPIONS 1995, 2001

2018 MONTANA FOOTBALL

BOBBY HAUCKHEAD COACHDirector of Athlet-ics Kent Haslam named former Grizzly head coach and San Diego State associate head coach

Bobby Hauck as the 37th head football coach at the University of Montana in 2017. On Nov. 30, Hauck agreed to a three-year con-tract, which will take him through the 2020 sea-son. He was formally introduced to Griz nation on Dec. 1, 2017 in a press conference at the Wash-ington-Grizzly Stadium Canyon Club. One of the winningest coaches in Grizzly histo-ry, the UM alum returned to his native Montana after five seasons as the head coach at UNLV, and three seasons serving as SDSU’s associate head coach and special teams coordinator. “I look forward to working with Coach Hauck and the football staff in advancing the overall mission of the athletic department. A mission focused on success in the community, in athletics, and in the classroom. We will not compromise on our pursuit of excellence in everything we do. Coach Hauck’s previous success on the football field at the University of Montana is well known and I expect that will continue. I also expect we will continue to build a culture of hard work, respect and accountability,” said Haslam. “It is an honor and a privilege to be able to come back home to a place that is so important to me. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue the tradition of excellence at the University of Mon-tana. I am absolutely committed to success both on and off the field. I cannot wait to get started, and look forward to being a strong advocate for the University as a whole,” said Hauck. 2018 marks Hauck’s thirtieth year coaching col-lege football with seven spent as Montana’s head coach from 2003 and 2009. He led the Grizzlies to three national championship appearances, won seven-straight Big Sky Championships, and mentored a host of future professionals. He began his coaching career with the Grizzlies in 1988 after earning a bachelor’s degree in busi-ness and physical education at Montana in 1987.

He is a three-time Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year, and was a finalist for the Eddie Robin-son Coach of the Year award in 2009. Hauck was prolific for Montana in his first stint as head coach, posting an overall 80-17 record, an 82 percent winning average, the highest in the FCS at the time. He also led the Griz to three perfect seasons in Big Sky Conference play with a 47-6 league record and won at least a share of the Big Sky title in each of his seven seasons. Hauck’s Grizzlies also excelled in the classroom during that time. From 2003-2009, Montana placed 104 football players on Academic All-Big Sky teams, the most, or second most in the league each year. In each of those seasons, foot-ball student-athletes also graduated at a higher rate than their campus counterparts, including a remarkable 90 percent rate in 2005. Known for operating a punishing rushing attack, Hauck’s Grizzlies outscored their opponents 3,079-1,795 in his 97-game tenure with the Griz. He also coached 37 first-team All-Big Sky selec-tions. “Griz Nation welcomes Coach Hauck back to the University of Montana. This process has moved quickly, but deliberately, and with in-depth dis-cussions of our expectations. I’ve appreciated that dialogue from a diversity of perspectives, be-cause it speaks to the heartfelt admiration for our university shared by so many,” said University of Montana President Sheila Stearns. Incoming University of Montana President Seth Bodnar spoke with Hauck when he was hired, sharing his vision for all student-athletes at UM. “Coach Hauck and I discussed my unwavering commitment to all of our students’ well-being and success, and the critical importance of building a respectful and positive culture – in athletics and across the university. We will hold ourselves accountable and live these values through our actions. I know that Coach Hauck has a deep love for this institution and our state, which is his home. As a former Division I student-athlete my-self, I believe that our athletic programs play a key role in developing young women and men of character. I look forward to working with Ath-letic Director Haslam, Coach Hauck, and all our coaches as we commit to that work,” said incom-ing University of Montana President Seth Bodnar. From 2010-2014 Hauck served as head coach and special teams coordinator at UNLV. As head coach, he led the Rebels to the Heat of Dallas Bowl in 2013 - their first winning season since

2000. As special teams coordinator, Hauck’s Running Rebels ranked No. 34 nationally in kick-off return average and No. 40 in kick return aver-age yards allowed. “I spent over 30 years as an Athletic Director at the Division-I level and made a lot of hires in ev-ery sport. Bobby Hauck is as good a coach and person as anyone I’ve been around. This is an absolute home run for the University of Montana. He did a great job here at UNLV,” said former AD Jim Livengood. “I think the world of him as a coach and as a person. He’s an incredible family person. Bobby Hauck could coach anywhere in the country, and the program, the university and the student-ath-letes would be better for it. He is absolutely as good as they come.” In 2015, Hauck accepted the role as special teams coordinator at San Diego State under legendary head coach Rocky Long. There he coached kick returner Rashaad Penny, a three-time Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year and 2017 Offensive Player of the Year - the only player in league history to win both awards in the same season. Hauck was born in Missoula and went to high school in Big Timber. He and his wife Stacy have four children: Alexandra, Elise, Robby and Syd-ney.

Champion. CFL MVP. CFL Hall of Famer. CFL Coach of the Year. Montana football great Dave Dickenson has earned many accolades in his illus-trious collegiate and professional career, but perhaps none as prestigious as this. On Monday, the National Football Founda-tion announced that Dickenson will be immor-talized as one of the greatest college football players of all time as a member of the Col-lege Football Hall of Fame Class of 2018. Dickenson will be inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside nine other legendary play-ers and three coaches at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4 in New York City. Their accomplishments will also be enshrined at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. "I am very honored and excited to be includ-ed in the Hall of Fame," said Dickenson. "We did some special things at Montana. To be able to represent our program, Don Read and the coaches, our school, and our city, means a lot to me. More than anything though, it means a lot to be able to represent the state of Montana." The class of 2018 includes legendary players Trevor Cobb – RB, Rice (1989-92), Kerry Collins – QB, Penn State (1991-94), Dave Dickenson – QB, Montana (1992-95), Dana Howard – LB, Illinois (1991-94), Calvin Johnson – WR, Geor-gia Tech (2004-06), Paul Palmer – RB, Temple (1983-86), Ed Reed – DB, Miami [Fla.] (1998-2001), Matt Stinchcomb – OT, Georgia (1995-98), Aaron Taylor – C/OG, Nebraska (1994-97), Charles Woodson – DB, Michigan (1995-97). Coaches joining the Hall of Fame include Frank Beamer – 280-144-4 (65.9%); Murray State (1981-86), Virginia Tech (1987-2015), Mack Brown – 244-122-1 (66.6%); Appalachian State (1983), Tulane (1985-87), North Carolina (1988-97), Texas (1998-2013), Mel Tjeerdsma – 242-82-4 (74.4%); Austin College [Texas] (1984-93), Northwest Missouri State (1994-2010).

The inductees were selected from a national bal-lot of 75 All-America players and six elite coach-es from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 98 players and 31 coaches from the divisional ranks. Dickenson is only the second player ever from the state of Montana to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The other: Grizzly great William "Wild Bill" Kelly who was inducted in 1969. Including the 2018 Hall of Fame class, only 997 players and 217 coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame from the near-ly 5.26 million who have played or coached the game during the past 149 years. Meaning few-er than two one-hundredths of a percent (.02%) of the individuals who have played the game have been deemed worthy of this distinction. "Being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame is such an amazing and well-de-served achievement for Dave," said Mon-tana Director of Athletics Kent Haslam. "He is a great representative of the University of Montana and the Grizzly football program. He was the definition of a student-athlete during his years here at UM, and we could not be more proud of him and his accomplishments." The announcement of the 2018 Class was made today live on ESPN's SportsCen-ter in Atlanta, the site of the College Foot-ball Playoff (CFP) National Championship. "We are extremely proud to announce the 2018 College Football Hall of Fame Class," said Ar-chie Manning, NFF Chairman and a 1989 Col-lege Football Hall of Famer in an NFF statement."Each of these men has established himself

DICKENSON TO BE INDUCTED INTOCOLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

among the absolute best to have ever played or coached the game, and we look forward to im-mortalizing their incredible accomplishments." The 2018 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be officially inducted at the 61st NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4, 2018, at the New York Hilton Midtown. The inductees will also be rec-ognized at their respective collegiate institutions with NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salutes, pre-sented by Fidelity Investments, during the fall. A Montana football legend and two-time First Team All-American, Dave Dickenson re-mains the Grizzlies’ all-time leading pass-er and still holds 28 other school records. The recipient of the 1995 Walter Payton Award as the top player in the FCS, Dickenson led Montana to the FCS national title that year. In the championship game, he orchestrated a 12-play, 72-yard scoring drive that culminated with the game-winning field goal as part of a come-from-behind win over Marshall. In four playoff games in 1995, Dickenson threw for 1,500 yards and 13 touchdowns, bringing his totals at the end of the season to 5,676 and 51, respectively.

Although the NCAA did not recognize playoff statistics at the time, he completed the reg-ular season with a school- and then-Big Sky Conference single-season record 4,176 pass-ing yards. Dickenson’s 379.6 yards per game in 1995 rank fifth all-time in FCS history and still stand as a school and conference record. His record-setting senior season also extend-ed off the field where he was named an NFF National Scholar-Athlete and earned his third consecutive Academic All-America honors.

2018 MONTANA FOOTBALL

Grizzly football jersey #37 began its lega-cy in 1983. Griz fullback and Plentywood native Kraig Paulson began the tradition of passing #37 on to a younger player who hailed from the state of Montana. Paulson was known for his hard-nosed play and workman mentality. So the tradition began. Number 37 has come to represent the Spir-it of Montana… hard work, dedication to the team, and tough play on the gridiron.
