Potentate Message

David Barnekoff

Nobles and Ladies,

A huge thank you to all who attended BASCO and enjoyed the food, fun, frolic, fellowship and infor-mation sharing. We had record-breaking attendance at all sessions. Please use the knowledge gained to strengthen our fraternity, temple, units and clubs.

Liz and I want to thank everyone for getting the First Lady’s project and the Potentate’s Project off to such a great start. The Potentate’s project has traditionally supported Ben Ali Temple. The first Lady’s project has traditionally supported either the temple or the hospital, or both.

Liz’s First Lady’s project supports the Child Life Specialists’ continuing education and technological ad-vancements, as well as, program development within the Child Life Department at Shriners Hospital for Children Northern California. Child Life specialists help to minimize the anxiety of hospitalization, in-crease understanding and strengthen coping strategies, while helping children to continue their typical growth and development. Research has shown a reduction in the amount of pain medication adminis-tered, shorter hospital stays and an increase in positive outcomes for patients, when supported by a Child Life Specialist.

The Potentate’s project will fund upgrading the Temples communication, office and our safety technol-ogy. It will allow us to better communicate with the membership, maintain more accurate records, and keep our members safer.

The March Stated Meeting, March 13th, will be Sweethearts Night. Nobles competing in the Mr. Shriner competition will entertain us. Many will compete but only one will be named Ben Ali’s Mr. Shriner 2018. It is an honor that will last a lifetime..

April will be a busy month with a variety of activities to enjoy. We start off on April 6th with an action-packed hard-hitting hockey game at the Stockton Arena. The Stockton Heat facing off against the San Jose Barracudas. On April 7th the Islander Club will have Islander Night at the Activities Building. Enjoy a night of great food, music, entertainment and dancing. They have it all. The April Stated Meeting, April

10th will have a Those Were the Days (50s theme). Bring a friend and show them the fun side of the Shrine. Prizes will be awarded to Nobles and Ladies bringing a prospective Mason or Shriner. See the flyers in this issue of the Shriner Monthly for more details.

Our next Hot Sands Ceremonial will be May 19th, at Ben Ali Temple. If you know any Masons who would like to join the Shrine it is now time to start signing them up.

Petitions for Initiation are available on the Ben Ali web site, the Ben Ali app, and from your Shrine Blue Lodge Ambassador, Temple office and Membership Chair Bill Wells.

Liz and I enjoy attending the many events and activities within the Ben Ali jurisdiction and spending time with you, our nobles and ladies. We are continuously inspired by your good work of getting the word out in your local communities about the Shrine and Shriners Hospital for Children-Northern Cali-fornia. Thank you for all you do. It is truly appreciated.

Yours in the Faith,

David Barnekoff

Kids Drive Themselves

to Surgery

A desire to take some of the stress out of

the surgical experience inspired an innova-

tive approach to care. That care comes in

the form of electric cars that kids between

the ages of 2 and 7 years old can drive to

surgery. The toy cars are just like those

that can be purchased off the shelf at a big

box retailer. But when a patient sits behind

the wheel they become vehicles of change.

“The cars give kids a sense of control and

independence,” said child life specialist

Caitlin French, who worked with her child

life colleagues and the operating room team

research the use of the cars. Sundeep

Tumber, D.O., chief of anesthesia, says the

cars also result in a decreased use of medi-

cation before surgery, which can speed the

recovery process. “We are seeing that the

cars are beneficial to both patients and par-

ents,” said Dr. Tumber.

Keystone Cops Patrol

John Timblin

"LET'S GET CRABBY". That's what you will hear if you talk to a Keystone Cop or a Ben Ali Clown. Tickets were printed and were available in late December for this popular event that will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018. Besides the delicious food there will be many fun activities held throughout the evening to keep the action lively. If you would like to attend contact me or any Keystone Cop or Clown for tickets. Tickets are $50 each. Four Cops and their Ladies recently attended a live play at the "Theater in the Heights" located in Citrus Heights. Keystone Cop/Clown Gary Kid-die's Lady Janet had a staring role in the play and she lived up to her Clown name of "Chatterbox." She

wasn't overly chatty but her acting was superb. The play was a Sherlock Holmes "Who Done It" comedy mystery and was very entertaining. After reading Janet's bio I can see that she is not a new-comer to the stage.

Join us at our monthly meeting to learn a little more about our Unit. We meet the last Thurs-day of the month with our meeting commencing at 7 P.M. If you would like to attend contact me for meeting location. (916) 300-0699 or [email protected]

Eat Dessert First

LIFE’S SHORT….EAT DESSERT FIRST

Ann Ward

Well, here we are again, another month has passed and with it Valentine’s Day. Hope everyone remembered their special valentine. Now Debbie Clark and I want to wish y’all a safe and sane St. Patrick’s Day. Remember to keep an eye out for the Wee Folk as they don’t take kindly to being stepped on.

After the Christmas holidays, BASCO weekend, which by the way was informative and lots of fun, Debbie and I decided we needed to watch our calorie intake. Where could we do this? The an-swer was Season’s 52, where nothing on the menu is over 750 calories. The décor is warm un-derstated elegance and everyone there is friend-ly, courteous and helpful. The menu price is mid-dle of the road, not expensive, and not inexpen-sive.

We decided since we were going to shop in the Arden Fair mall after lunch, we could have a glass of wine. Debbie ordered red and I had white. For starters we split a warm beet and toasted almond salad, which we thoroughly enjoyed. This was followed by Southern Style Shrimp and Grits for me, which consisted of chorizo, bacon and stone ground cheddar grits. The shrimp were to die for, omg were they good. I know those of you that don’t like grits went oh yuck! But, I’m telling you they were good. Debbie chose the Grilled BBQ Meat-loaf, which was made with grass-fed beef blended with mushrooms, served with green beans and Yu-kon mash. The meatloaf was melt- in- your mouth and yummy. The desserts come in small glasses, pre-sented on a tray, and you pick the one you want. I chose the pecan and Debbie the chocolate one. The size is just right and we enjoyed them with a cup of coffee. Season’s 52 can be found at 1689 Arden Way in the Arden Mall. Telephone No. 916-922-5252. If you go, we hope you enjoy Season’s 52 as much as we did. This is not a place where you have to rush your meal, and the menu seems to have something for everyone.

Until next time take care God Bless and remember LIFE’S SHORT….EAT DESSERT FIRST!!!

2018 Clothing and Jewelry

Art Hawkins, Quartermaster

Each year the Potentate and First Lady select clothing that is sold by the Quartermaster during the first quarter of the year. This year Potentate Dave Barnekoff chose a patriotic polo style shirt with a US flag motif and an embroidered Shrine emblem for his uniform # 2 ($40). Lady Liz selected a blue T-shirt with “Love” on the front and “Shrine Lady” embroidered on the sleeve ($28) and a white denim jacket ($32).

Additionally, Lady Liz is selling a Swarovski heart crystal neckless ($25) and/or matching earrings ($30) embellished with a gold Shrine emblem to raise money for her project, buy both for $50, a $5 savings.

All of these items are available for purchase on the Ben Ali web-site under “store”. The website has pictures and available sizes. All clothing orders are paid for in advance. Clothing will be or-dered from the distributor following stated meetings provided the minimum order quantity of 12 for an item has been placed by members. If not, orders are accumulated until at least 12 of an item have been ordered. It is best to order early when oth-ers are buying to insure timely receipt. When the ordered mer-chandise has been received from the vendor it can be picked up at a stated meeting or it can be shipped to your home for a shipping fee.

Ballad of the new podium

Have you noticed the Temple’s new podium? Cibara Motor Corps and the Purveyors donated the cost of materials for a custom podium made of cherry hardwood. Art Hawkins crafted the podium which features the current year’s poten-tate’s pin on the front.

Shriners Business Network

You know Shrine members…but do you know the services their companies provide?

Shriner’s Business Network has been formed hoping to generate a Shriner Business Listing,

similar to a Shriner’s Yellow Pages, which will create a forum where Shriner’s can help Shriner’s.

Any Shriner Noble or their lady is welcome to join. If you would like to be listed in the directory

without being a member of the club just let us know. The Shriner’s Business Network will meet

twice monthly on the second Tuesday for lunch and the fourth Tuesday for dinner meetings at

Vallejo’s Res- taurant - 1100 O Street – Sacramento 95814

For further in- formation please contact Scott Colvin at 916-849-3387

MEMBERSHIP

Membership Referral Program

Commitment-Empowerment-Accountability

The three “R”s of membership development are recruitment – the successful creation of new members; retention – providing a program that keeps your current members active, engaged and involved; and restoration – restoring to active membership those members who have lost connection with the fraternity. These concepts are critical to the future success of our organizations.

As Shriners, we all have accountability to our fraternity. It becomes our responsibility to educate others about the Shrine, create more Shriners, recruit more Freemasons, and refer more patients to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Collaboration is essential, and we must all work together to promote successful and efficient membership processes.

Imperial has developed a new approach to membership development, changing the membership paradigm with the introduction of a new referral program with this new referral functionality, current Nobles can now directly refer names of friends, family members and acquaintances who they feel would make good Shriners.

Similar to beashrinernow.com, this new referral program is administered through WebFez and links the prospect with his referring noble, promoting natural mentorship based on pre-existing friendship or acquaintance. The program encourages constant collaboration, so that everyone can share their Shrine with the good men around them.

A recommended part of the new program is the encouragement to host fellowship parties and rush events. Fellow-ship parties should be in a relaxed environment and have an open table/social concept, with no formalized member-ship presentation. These parties should be open to prospective members, but with no pressure for membership re-cruitment or restoration; and membership literature should be available upon request.

Rush events have an open house, social and educational concept, and are open to prospective members and their families. A multifaceted presentation providing information on Shriners, Masonry and affiliated organizations is en-couraged at these events, including information about temple clubs and units. Membership literature should also be provided to all attendees.

To assure our contribution to the overall Imperial goal, Ben Ali has set our Temple goal at 55 new Noble creations for the 2017-2018 shrine year. To achieve this lofty goal will take all of us working together, spotting new members and inviting good non-fraternity men to join us. So let’s get to work!

THANKS FOR SUPPORTING OUR PROGRAM!
