That is, if one were to sing clearly, he or she would have to have the right heart and breath. Otherwise, no song is possible. We need the internal intention (tune, breath) to produce the external action. To follow Christ, we also need the right heart and breath. This does not mean we will never fall or fail. Rather, it will seem – at times – that we are regressing or losing our place in the song. This is a challenge. When we experience setbacks, the ending of friendships, discord in our families, academic challenges, we return to the tune – the word of God – inside of us. We are called to keep our ears open for his song. And, we can do this also by sitting before the Lord in prayer and silence. Let the song play in your head and heart. One of our prayers might be not only to sing a new song but also to discover friends and loved ones who will help us to sing and praise God. In other words, pray that the Lord will send good friends into our lives. Augustine’s way is to regard our actions as praising God as though we are singing; he writes: “You ask me how to sing his praises. You have the words, Sing to the Lord a new song, and you wish to know what praises to sing. The answer is: His praise is in the assembly of the saints (Psalm 149); it is in the singers them- selves. If you desire to praise him, then live what you express. Live good lives, and you yourselves will be his praise.” ( AugusƟne, Sermon 34, 1-3, 5-6, CCL 41, 424-426, 3 rd week of Easter, Tuesday, 2 nd reading (Office of Readings). This does not necessarily mean a sheet of music. Rather, this call to sing refers not only to music, but to the method of our lives. By singing to the Lord (cf. Psalm 98, Psalm 149) we mani- fest what is otherwise invisible. And, when we are truly following God’s path and commands, it is then that we are in tune. Just as music is based on timing, we are also called to keep our schedule and efforts in balance. After all, wisdom calls us not only to know what to do but also when to carry it out. Augustine uses the example of music to show this. 6 MAY 2018 2018 EASTER COLLECTIONS EASTER $18,103.01 EASTER FLOWERS $2,001.22 Holy Land $1,214.70 St. Vincent DePaul Society $926.50

Dear Brothers & Sisters of Our Lady of Lourdes:

Singing Twice

Sing to the Lord a new song, a hymn in the assembly of the faithful. Let Israel

be glad in their maker, the people of Zion rejoice in their king. (Psalm 149:1-2)

A proverb of St. Augustine reminds us that song brings us closer to God’s presence. Augustine is quoted as saying, “He who sings well prays twice.” Our esteem of music, however, could leave some feeling left out. Maybe we say, “I cannot sing; I cannot carry a tune.” Please note that we invite every person to sing with us at Mass and every person to give it a try if you would like to join our choir – either as a child or as an adult.
