Savannah Pride 2017By Sean Brandon

On October 28th thousands of people came out to Ellis Square for Savannah Pride. Pride this year featured a number of changes designed to enhance the experience and create a more public presence for the celebration. “This is the first year in Ellis Square,” said Regan Drake, executive director of Savannah Pride. “Here, we are available to everyone and right in the heart of the city. We have the support of the city and our business partners, and it’s been great. And everyone is of course welcome to pride” he said. Chairman’s MessageBy Michael Ploski

As we approach the end of the year we find it is time:A time to reflect on the year behind us.A time to give thanks for all we have.A time to give thanks for all we have accomplished.A time to share with friends and family.A time to help those in need.A time to thank those who have helped us.A time to plan for the year ahead.

I wish you all Happy Holidays and a Wonderful New Year.

As always, I end with:Be Safe, Be Strong, Be Happy.Be yourself, Be Proud of who you are.Don’t tolerate bigotry and hatred.Respect others and their opinions.Resist and work together for what is right.

SAVANNAH PRIDE 2017

The Ellis Square celebration culminated in a performance by Grammy award winning singer and actress Estelle. Pride also featured a drag queen led trolley tour of downtown thanks to members of the house of Gunt. Later that evening the Pride after party was hosted by Ghost Coast Distillery and featured a number of impressive costumes worn by revelers.

Savannah Pride has said that given the success of the Ellis Square location this will be the location of Pride for the foreseeable future.

November SocialBy Jon Kesler. Photography by Billy Wooten.

This month’s social was hosted by Ghost Coast Distillery in the old Loading Dock building. With a DJ playing, the staff was on key mixing drinks, selling souvenirs, and guiding tours of the Distillery. There were many new faces as well as faces we have not seen in a while. Our normal potluck was allowed, however many opted to give the $5 donation. As a reminder, please remember that for monthly socials we ask that a dish, drink, or $5 is given.

Just when you thought that January would be the calm after the holiday storm, along comes the FCN January First Saturday Social. The Social, which occurs on January 6th, will be hosted by Melvin and Billy at their southside “estate” at 12 Arabica Lane in the Coffee Pointe community. January 6 is known to some as Three Kings Day, or The Feast of the Three Kings, or Epiphany; granny used to call it “Old Christmas.” And The 12 Days of Christmas come to a celebratory end on the 12 Night, which, you guessed it, is January 6. For many the holiday season does not officially come to an end until then. Rumor has it the FCN version of this ancient celebration could well become Three QUEENS Day, who knows. But what we do know is you do not want to miss this once-a-year party that will kick off a great 2018 for the LGBT community in Savannah.

Get Centered Reception & Fundraiser A Big SuccessBy Billy Wooten

The swanky and ever-popular Andaz in downtown Savannah was the site for a very successful fundraiser for Savannah’s LGBT Center. The event, held on Friday night before the Pride celebration, was sponsored by Savannah Pride and proudly hosted by Mark Bennett & Thomas Macauley, Eric Chin & Jonathan Stalcup, Bobby Glenn, and Lisa Sweeny & Jill Simon. In addition to fine food and an assortment of wines, there was a very successful silent auction including art from the ROYGBIV Show at The Center, several hotel getaways, a yacht cruise, a chef-prepared dinner with wine pairings, and numerous gift cards. According to Fundraising Chair, Lynn Bowling, the event was very successful. “The auction was very profitable and donations are still coming in,” said Bowling, “and once tallied I’m sure the event will be a rousing (and financial) success. We appreciate our sponsor and the hosts for their energy and dedication.”

Participants Needed For Trans Survey

By Billy Wooten

On Saturday afternoon, December 9th, from 2:30 – 5:30, at The LGBT Center, the TRANScending Barriers organization will be conducting surveys with the transgender and gender non conforming community here in Savannah. The survey questions are centered around the experiences of transgender and gender non conforming people in Georgia. The survey will be used to compile data for analysis in determining the necessities for the community, recognizing the gaps and delays in the trans-specific direct services from present organizations, and for the purpose of structuring our future programs.

Participants will be provided gift cards or gift bags as an incentive for participating in the survey.

Holiday First Saturday Social at The Center

By Billy Wooten

Plan to begin the holidays with FCN at The LGBT Center. On Saturday December 2nd, the Center will host the FCN First Saturday Social, featuring festive live music, decorating a holiday tree, enjoying food and various adult beverages, and maybe even a visit from a big fat man with a long white beard!

We need your help with the tree; if you have extra ornaments, especially if they are “gay” themed, please bring them and add to our decorations. We will also again accept contributions of canned and boxed food for the Thomas Park Food Pantry. The Center is in the Thomas Park District so we are now neighbors! Please bring a donation of rice (small bags), dried beans, powdered milk, canned meat, canned fruit, canned vegetables and hearty soups.

So HO, HO, HO and see you on December 2nd.

World AIDS DayBy Billy Wooten

World AIDS Day, first held in 1988, is on the 1st of December each year. The Savannah LGBT Center will host World AIDS Day: Remembrance, Reflection, & Resilience on Friday December 1st at 4pm. It is an opportunity for people in our community to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate loved ones who have died. The service will be led by The LGBT Center’s pastoral group, consisting of faith leaders from various congregations.

“Tio Arturo”WORKS BY ALEXANDRO SANTANA

Opens Dec. 1st from 5-8pm

ABOUT THE ARTISTAlexandro Santana imbues his work with a calculated complexity fed by a lusciously-hued aesthetic, an international upbringing (Spain and the Dominican Republic, mostly) and an affinity for obscure postmodernist French philosophers.

ABOUT THE SHOWA collection of works by Alexandro Santana. Mediums range from oils to drawings, all swankily mindful of Louis the Sixties meets Palm Springs.

Movie Night at The Center Set for December 17by Max Arnzen

Lauded as one of the best films of 2015, our holiday screening focuses on a transgender prostitute recently released from prison. Ready to return to work, she has to deal with the unsettling information that her boyfriend-pimp is now seeing someone else (a cisgender woman, no less!). The following pursuit throughout the cityscape of Los Angeles is at times heartbreaking and extremely hilarious. But what does it have to do with Christmas time? Well, you’ll have to come to the screening to find out. At parts nouvelle-vague and Italian neorealism, the film was made using three iPhone 5s and director Sean Baker treats his subjects with almost documentary-like objectiveness, allowing the trans actors to bring forth the feelings and the drama - which they do with stunning precision. As much fun as the film is, it still hits hard on the topics of sex work and the necessity for transgender women of color to find financial stability in a society where they are discriminated against. I hope you’ll join us in celebrating

these strong characters Sunday, December 17th at the LGBT Center at 7PM.
