DAHLIASThe following pages give details of some of the finest Dahlias available. All varieties have been thoroughly tested on the nursery and they can be offered with complete confidence. For our General Terms and conditions please see page 26.

DAHLIA CLASSIFICATIONThe classification of Dahlias in this catalogue is based on the NDS Classified List 2018, 33rd Edition. The “Classified Directory and Judging Rules” is available from the National Dahlia Society and is free to new members. Some varieties included in this catalogue are either not yet classified or are no longer included (prefixed U). Where this is the case we have included them in what we believe to be the most appropriate section after trial at the nursery or from historical information. We offer Dahlias in the following forms: -

POT TUBERS AVAILABLE DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY These are compact tubers grown in a 9cm pot and ideal for exhibitors or keen growers who have the facilities (e.g heated greenhouse or propagator) to produce and propagate their own stock. We strongly advise unpacking on arrival and, if necessary, storing in a cool, frost free environment until required for setting away. A minimum of 50°F(10°C) is required for propagation. Water tubers sparingly until growth is evident. Early ordering is advisable. Some varieties already in short supply are only available through our website where tuber availability is updated regularly.SPECIAL NOTE. Any tuber which fails to grow must be returned to us by March 30th. We will then either replace with tubers or mini plants (if available), supply a credit note or refund. No action can be taken unless a tuber is returned.MINI PLANTS AVAILABLE FROM 26TH MARCH TO END OF MAY The most popular form, these are strong rooted cuttings for those customers who have the facilities for potting up and growing on under glass (minimum 50°F, 10°C). On receipt, they should be unpacked immediately and potted on into a 9-12cm pot using a good quality compost. Be careful to avoid over watering, particularly after potting. We will make every effort to supply during the period requested but orders must be in the office at least FIVE WEEKS BEFORE required as cuttings are taken to order. No mini plant orders (unless for our special collections or on a substitutes acceptable basis) can be accepted after 20th April. GARDEN READY PLANTS AVAILABLE FOR 2 WEEKS COMMENCING 29TH MAYThese larger plants, grown in a 7cm paper pot, are “garden ready” after allowing a few days to get over the journey! They are popular with customers who do not have the facilities for growing on, but do however come at an additional cost of £2.00 per plant on top of the mini plant price. Orders must be in the office by the 20th April (unless for our special collections or on a substitutes acceptable basis) as cuttings are taken and plants are grown to order. Please Note we are unable to supply Garden Ready Dahlias to destinations outside of mainland UK.

QUANTITY DISCOUNTS - MINI PLANTSThese only apply when 3 or more of the SAME variety are ordered. Please remember to add £2.00 per plant for Garden Ready.

Dear Friends and Fellow Dahlia and Chrysanthemum Enthusiasts, December 2017

Welcome to this, the 97th edition of our Main catalogue. As we approach 100 years of growing Dahlias and Chrysanthemums it is interesting looking through old catalogues to see how much they have progressed through the years and how many things have changed. Consistent through all that time though has been our aim to bring you the best in new varieties and provide both quality plants and service to the best of our ability. Thank you to all of you who continue to entrust us with your orders and for the many favourable comments we receive throughout the season. I do try and make sure that our team behind the scenes are aware of the esteem in which we are held. Attending Harrogate Autumn Flower show is a repeat entry in our Diary each year and in September we were once again awarded a Premier Gold Award for our exhibit of Dahlias which featured over 80 varieties. A lot of preparation goes into staging such a colourful exhibit and it is a full team effort and wouldn’t be the success it is without the eye for colour that my cousin Maxine has for grouping and coordinating the arrangements. Meeting so many dare I say friends makes Harrogate one of the highlights of the year and Sue, myself and Maxine thoroughly enjoy our time there each year. The popularity of Dahlias seems to be going from strength to strength and the launch in 2016 of the National Dahlia Society Facebook group is linking together enthusiasts from all over the world. The help and encouragement given by so many well-respected exhibitors across the country on Facebook is, I think, helping to increase the number of young people wanting to grow and show. This must bode well for the future and what better platform than this new-fangled social media to share knowledge and experience. What Grandad would have thought of this new method of communication and networking I do not know. I know my Dad struggled to comprehend the possibilities. The depth and range of new varieties of Dahlias now is, I think, unprecedented, with so many amateur breeders having a bit of a dabble and coming up with some pretty good varieties. It must be noted that we are not just looking for top performing exhibition varieties but also ones giving good and reliable garden performance. We had over 70 varieties in our own trial last year and eleven of these have made it into the following pages, indicated by a “♦”. There has been much interest in Peter Greenway’s Josudi varieties recently. Sadly, Peter passed away early in 2017 before he could see how popular his raisings could become. Josudi Aurora (p20) was the 2017 winner of the Harry Howarth Memorial Medal at theNDS Exhibition Trials after already proving itself in 2015 winning both the Crowley and Jescot Trophies. This, along with Josudi Neptune, are just 2 of the 15 varieties that Peter entrusted to us with the agreement that if they made it into our catalogue his share of proceeds should be donated to the Cornish Air Ambulance Service. With a few more on trial to be released over the next few years I am sure the Josudi name will be around for a while. Another notable new release is the new Miniature Decorative, Westerton Ella Grace, from Gordon Hodgson, who kindly allowed it to be named after our gorgeous Great Niece. A share of proceeds from this, at Gordons request, will go to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. New varieties of quality Exhibition Chrysanthemums are something I must strive harder to source for next season although we have two new varieties of Exhibition Sprays from Rod Fox, a consistently successful raiser. Frizbee and Finn Lyttle are sure to do well in the future and both are featured on pages 42 and 43. There is much more I could include here but space is running out rapidly and the tipple of single malt in the glass next to me is down to the last drop so finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a successful 2017 from all of us at Halls of Heddon and we look forward to supplying your requirements for the forthcoming season. TO HAPPY AND SUCCESFUL GROWING IN 2018!Yours faithfully

Open centred Dahlias are great

for pollinators

Collerette Dahlias have flowers with a single outer ring of generally flat petals (ray florets) with a ring of smaller petals (florets) forming a collar. The open centred flowers are hugely attractive to all types of pollinators. These make an excellent addition to any garden, particularly herbaceous borders.

This section includes Star, Orchid, Anemone centred and single flowered Dahlias. The open centred varieties included are excellent for attracting all types of pollinators. Being very free flowering they will provide a wonderful display of colour through summer and well into the autumn. They are becoming increasingly popular because of this.

COLLERETTE, WATERLILY AND BEE and BUTTERFLY COLLECTIONSWe feel that this group of Dahlias is one of the best for using in herbaceous borders and for general planting. The waterlily types make excellent cut flowers whilst the Collerettes are extremely free flowering and are particularly good for attracting butterflies and bees into the garden. Both types can be ‘stopped’ when 5-7 pairs of leaves have developed and all the resulting stems allowed to flower. Disbudding of these is only necessary if growing for exhibition or if they are needed for cutting. The following collections are of OUR CHOICE from this catalogue and supplied in a wide colour range with a label for each variety.

POMPON AND BALL DAHLIA COLLECTIONSPompons are dainty flowers that only reach about 50mm (2”) across. Ball dahlias have flowers up to 150mm (6”) across. Both types can be ‘stopped’ when 5-7 pairs of leaves have developed and all the resulting stems allowed to flower. Disbudding is only necessary if growing for exhibition or for cut flowers as this gives longer stems. The following collections are of OUR CHOICE from this catalogue and supplied in a wide colour range with a label for each variety.

Chrysanthemums are supplied as strong rooted cuttings grown in individual cells ready for potting into at least a 9cm pot and are available from February to Mid May. Orders for other than our special collections must be received before March 15th.

Please indicate clearly on the order form when plants are required bearing in mind that a minimum of 5 weeks notice is required as cuttings are taken to order. We would suggest the following guidelines to help you determine when it is best for you to receive your plants depending on the facilities you have available:HEATED GREENHOUSE - from early February onwards.COLD GREENHOUSE - not before mid-March in the South and early April in the North.COLD FRAME - not before early April in the South and mid-end April in the NorthNO PROTECTION - not before end April in the South and early May in the North.

SUGGESTED STOPPING DATES

For those of you that are showing it is important to have an idea of "stopping" dates. To assist exhibitors in timing their blooms we have now included suggested stopping dates for each variety within their descriptions. These dates are intended as a guide only and are based on aiming for show dates of early/mid September and early/mid November in the North East of England. Adjustments should be made for earlier or later shows. Due to longer day length, growers in the south of the country should delay these suggested dates by up to 4 weeks whilst more northerly growers than ourselves would need to stop up to 2 weeks or so earlier. As an extremely rough guide delay stopping by 1 week for every 150 miles south of Newcastle and bring forward by 1 week for every 150 miles further north. If you are not aiming to grow for shows then these stopping dates become much less critical with a delay in stopping only resulting in a corresponding delay in flowering. The serious grower will keep their own records from year to year to assist them in timing for shows. Please Note: Depending on when your order is received and the period you have requested delivery of your order, some of these suggested dates may have been missed. This will not affect the plant, but may result in some varieties flowering later than indicated.

When it comes to late flowering varieties you will see that most have 2 stopping dates suggested. Exhibitors will tend to flower on 2nd crown buds as this gives the plant a longer growing season, a bigger root system and therefore generally better flowers. Perfectly good results when growing for pleasure can however be achieved on later delivered plants by just using the later date given for the 2nd stop.

Blooms have close, firm and tightly formed incurved florets (petals) which should form a perfect globe. These will all generally flower in September depending on cultural practices and stopping dates of which a suggested date (for northern growers) is given in brackets. After stopping restrict the number of breaks (stems) on each plant to 3-5 stems. * denotes ability to flower outside without protection from wind or rain.

Blooms have drooping florets (petals) which should reflex gracefully and overlap one another to give a fully reflexed bloom - an umbrella effect. These will all generally flower in September depending on cultural prac-tices and stopping dates of which a suggested date (for northern growers) is given in brackets. After stopping restrict the number of breaks (stems) on each plant to 3-5 stems. * denotes ability to flower outside without protection from wind or rain.

Usually grown in pots in a soil-based compost these would normally be grown outside and moved into the greenhouse just before buds break into colour, flowering in the greenhouse from late October into November. These varieties are normally flowered on 2nd crown buds (stopped twice). Suggested stopping dates are shown in ( ) for flowering end October - early November in the North of England. For exhibition purposes only 2 or 3 blooms should be allowed to fully develop on each plant though more can be allowed when blooms are just for cutting.

Late October to December flowering subject to cultural practices and stopping dates and needing a heated or at least frost free greenhouse. Generally incurving flowers although not as tightly balled as the true incurves. For exhibition purposes restrict to 2 or 3 blooms per plant, more if just for cut flower. Normally grown in pots in a soil-based compost outside and moved into the greenhouse just before buds break into colour. Most varieties are normally flowered on 2nd crown buds (stopped twice). Suggested stopping dates shown in ( ) for the first stop and red (2nd stop) are for flowering end October - early November in the North of England. Grown in pots they would usually be brought into the greenhouse from September to protect the potentially enormous blooms during their development. It is important to be able to provide good air circulation to prevent blooms damping off. Most varieties are normally flowered on 2nd crown buds (stopped twice) and grown no more than 2 up for exhibition. NCS Classification:- 1=Large Exhibition, 2= Medium Exhibition

PLEASE NOTE: NOT AVAILABLE BEFORE MID-LATE MARCH. Growing on is similar to other Greenhouse Chrysanthemums except that they are best on a 2nd stop growing about 8 up otherwise flowers can be too full of petals. They are less prone to damping off than the bigger blooms and last well in water. NCS Classification: 7 - November, a- Large Flowered, b - Medium Flowered

PLEASE NOTE: NOT AVAILABLE BEFORE MID-LATE MARCH.These unusual Chrysanthemums are gaining a following and proving to be increasingly popular. Culture is similar to other greenhouse Chrysanthemums with plants generally flowering end of October-December. We have given each variety a suggested stopping date for flowering end October - early November in the North of England.

GROWING TIP

GREENHOUSE FLOWERING CHRYSANTHEMUMS

ASSORTED GREENHOUSE CHRYSANTHEMUM COLLECTIONS

As with Dahlias, whether growing indoors or outside, it is important to support the flowering stems of Chrysanthemums with canes or stakes, regularly tying them in as the plants grow.

Fully double with a number of flowers developing on each stem this section includes varieties useful for exhibiting (E), floral arranging and late summer colour in the garden.

Flowering from August to October these are relatively easy to grow and make excellent cut flowers. All varieties require only to be “stopped” (the growing tip pinched out) at about 15-20cms (6-8”) when they are growing strongly and all the resulting growth tied in. Unlike the blooms, no disbudding is required but if you are growing for exhibition only 5 or 6 buds should be allowed to develop at the top of each stem These should be selected for evenness in height, development and spacing with the aim of having as even a head of flowers as possible. We have given each variety a suggested stopping date shown in ( ) for flowering mid-September in the North of England.

PLEASE NOTE: NOT AVAILABLE BEFORE MID-LATE MARCH. The Rubellum and Korean types listed below are ideal for the herbaceous border bringing an abundance of autumn colour, with some varieties flowering well into the winter! They are also an invaluable late season source of nectar and act as a magnet for Butterflies and Bees. The plants can grow quite bushy so need plenty of space but are often strong enough to support themselves. We have found them to be very hardy surviving outside with no protection and flowering very freely year after year. We are indebted to Judy Barker who holds the National Collection of Koreans, Rubellums and Hardy Sprays for supplying stock of some of these varieties.
