Shlomo Mintz

Legendary virtuoso Shlomo Mintz returns to Dunedin as soloist in Tchaikovsky’s monumental Violin Concerto. Esteemed for his impeccable musicianship, stylistic versatility and commanding technique, he regularly appears with the most celebrated orchestras and conductors on the international stage.

Spanish conductor José Luis Gomez started his musical career as a violinist in Venezuela’s renowned El Sistema project. In September 2010, he was catapulted to international attention when he won First Prize at the International Sir Georg Solti Conductor’s Competition. His electrifying energy, talent and creativity led to immediate appointments with international orchestras. On his first visit to Dunedin, he will conduct Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7, a symphony regarded as one of Dvorak’s finest.

INTERNATIONALSERIES TWO Saturday 1 September 7.30 pm Dunedin Town Hall

PROGRAMME:Bizet: L’Arlésienne (extracts)Orff: Carmina Burana

Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana is based on 24 poems from a collection of old German texts found at Benediktbeuern Monastery. The subject matter, however, is less than holy; one item is actually a drinking song. The work’s first and last movements are the very well-known “O Fortuna”.

The soloists are some of New Zealand’s and Australia’s finest singers, and they will be joined by City Choir Dunedin, Southern Youth Choir and other singers from Dunedin’s many youth choirs.

Conductor Marc Taddei is known for his charismatic and inspirational conducting, and he has been Orchestra Wellington’s Music Director since 2007.

Bizet’s two charming L’Arlésienne Suites consist of music selected from his incidental music for a play. Lyrical and spirited by turns, the melodies are rooted in Provençal folk songs and dances, yet have all the colour and drama associated with the composer of Carmen.

INTERNATIONALSERIES THREE Saturday 27 October 7.30 pm Dunedin Town Hall

Russian RomanticsRach 2 Rachmaninov’s second piano concerto and

Tchaikovsky’s fourth symphony sweep the listener along on their emotional roller-coaster journeys: pain and despair at one extreme, soaring ecstasy at the other – traits typical of the Russian late-Romantic tradition.

The Concerto is also said to depict Rachmaninov’s own life story with compelling honesty, and its endlessly flowing lyricism has helped to make it one of the best-loved piano concertos. Wellington-based pianist Jian Liu makes his début performance with the DSO. His playing has been described as

“passionate, articulate, deeply expressive, and wholly musical’.

Simon Over, the orchestra’s London-based Principal Guest Conductor, returns to conduct this powerful all-Russian programme.

PROGRAMME:Beethoven: Egmont OvertureJack Speirs: Night MusicRodrigo: Concierto AndaluzFauré: Pelléas et Mélisande SuiteMozart: Symphony No. 35, Haffner

Kenneth Young ConductorVladimir Gorbach, Owen Moriarty, Jane Curry, John Couch Guitars

GuitarExtravaganza

At the heart of this programme are three evocative works spanning exactly 100 years. Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande Suite (1892) depicting the tragic story of Princess Mélisande, and regarded as Fauré’s orchestral masterpiece; Jack Speirs’ Night Music, written in 1992; and Rodrigo’s Concierto Andaluz (1967), a fascinating blend of baroque-influenced and impressionistic Spanish music. Making their début performance with the DSO as soloists for Rodrigo’s Concierto is the remarkable NZ Guitar Quartet.

Mozart’s Haffner symphony is amongst his last symphonies which are considered amongst the pinnacle of his compositions.

Conducting this concert is Wellington-based Kenneth Young, who conducts leading New Zealand and Australian orchestras.

PROGRAMME:Britten: Simple SymphonyCopland: Appalachian Spring SuiteAnthony Ritchie: Viola Concerto No. 2 (world première)Tchaikovsky: Serenade for Strings

Richard Davis ConductorTim Deighton Viola

Voila Viola!

Dunedin-based Anthony Ritchie has been hailed as “one of the greatest composers of his time” and the DSO has had the privilege of many première performances of his works during its 29-year association with him. The DSO is delighted to be presenting yet another world première performance: his Viola Concerto No. 2. Tim Deighton, the concerto soloist, originally from New Zealand, is Professor of Viola at Penn State University (USA) and is acclaimed as a leading teacher and performer.

Complementing this new work are two 20th century works: Benjamin Britten’s Simple Symphony and Copland’s Appalachian Spring, and the programme concludes with Tchaikovsky’s rousing Serenade for Strings.

Melbourne-based conductor Richard Davis is known for his versatility, and he conducts leading orchestras in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

You’re invited to join the DSO for our exciting 2018 concerts. We have a stunning line-up of guest artists from around the world: one of the world’s top violinists Shlomo Mintz, Spanish conductor José Luis Gomez, Australian conductor Richard Davis, plus leading New Zealand conductors and soloists, and of course Principal Guest Conductor Simon Over from the UK. The programmes offer plenty of variety: from landmark masterpieces to not-so-well-known works. A highlight will be the world première of a concerto by Dunedin composer Anthony Ritchie.

We are very thankful for the invaluable support the orchestra receives from you, our audience, and also from our funders, sponsors and donors, all of whom enable the DSO to continue to be a proud and vital part of Dunedin’s and New Zealand’s vibrant culture. The very many of you who supported our move to Hanover Hall just over a year ago will be pleased to know that it’s proved to be an outstanding rehearsal space and administration hub for the orchestra, and a popular performance venue. Thank you.

Do join us in 2018 for a spectacular year of music!Simon Over – Principal Guest ConductorBrendan Gray – President of the DSO BoardPhilippa Harris – General Manager
