2018 Carclew Artist in Residence Program Outline Aim: To provide two, early-career artists with the time, space and support to explore and develop their practice over a 12 month period as Artists in Residence at Carclew. The Resident The 2018 Artists in Residence will each be provided exclusive use of one of two Old Stable Studios at Carclew, 11 Jeffcott Street, North Adelaide. Primarily an opportunity for early-career artists to experiment with their practice and hone their craft, Artists in Residence will also be supported by Carclew staff to develop their professional capacities more broadly. 2018 Artists in Residence will also contribute work to the annual South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA) exhibition curated by the 2018 Carclew Curator in Residence in Carclew’s Ballroom Gallery. Expectations: Artists in Residence The 2018 Artists in Residence will:

be aged between 18 and 26 on January 1, 2018.

be a current resident of South Australia.

enter a formal contract agreement with Carclew for the period of the residency.

attain at their own cost, a DCSI Working With Children Clearance.

use the space provided regularly and consistently throughout the period of the residency

supply all materials used throughout the residency

create or provide work to be featured the annual SALA exhibition, working with the 2018 Curator in Residence. This exhibition is to take place within the Carclew Ballroom Gallery as part of SALA in August 2018.

meet regularly with Carclew staff, and provide written and verbal updates and feedback regarding the progress of their residency.

contribute content to Carclew’s website and social media presence.

participate in artist presentations and/or open studio events during Carclew functions, subject to availability and with reasonable notice.

Benefits Carclew can negotiate a range of benefits including:

free and exclusive access to Old Stables Studio between 7am and 12am, 7 days a week. Please note: there may be occasional restrictions upon the days/hours of access, specifically during private events held on Carclew grounds. In these instances, notification will be made by Carclew staff to alert you of restrictions.

free access to wireless internet and available meeting rooms, office space (via Carclew’s booking system).

free access to Carclew’s Fifth Quarter Intensive Workshop program and Helpman Academy’s Activate Seminar Series as negotiated throughout residency period. At the end of the residency, the Curator in Residence will be provided the option of automatic entry into Fifth Quarter.

promotion and mentorship support directly from Carclew’s Arts Programs, Funding and Marketing teams.

The term of residence will begin in January, 2018 as negotiated with Carclew staff.

2018 Carclew Artist in Residence Selection Criteria and Application Process Carclew will assess the candidates for the 2018 Artist in Residence Program based upon their supplied Artist Statement, Creative CV, Artist Biography and Support Materials against the following selection criteria.

Quality of past work and artistic merit of proposed residency activity

Suitability of applicant’s practice/plans to studio spaces

Potential of applicant to fulfil the residency expectations

Impact of residency on applicant’s development of new skills, abilities and networks

Timeliness of this opportunity in relation to applicant’s career and skill development

Willingness to engage with Carclew, arts sector and wider community Applications are to include the following (use this as a checklist when submitting your application)

Completed Cover Sheet or JotForm Artist Statement (max. 1 page)

Consider the following questions as prompts for your statement. o Why do you want to participate in the Residency? o What activities do you intend to undertake as part of the Residency? o Where do you see yourself in your career right now? o How do you see the Residency benefiting the development of your career? o What do you believe you can contribute to Carclew, the arts sector and

wider community through the Residency? Creative CV (max. 1 page) Biography (max. 300 words) Support materials (as appropriate to your previous experience)

A selection committee made up of two (2) Carclew staff and three (3) external leaders of the Adelaide arts community will assess all applications received by the deadline.
