Matthew Jennings, from USAOne of my first explorations upon coming to Edinburgh was a near magical excursion to the Botanical Gardens. Walking into the Glasshouses was like crossing a threshold into a completely new environment with a spike in temperature, pungent smell of life, and overwhelming sense of calm.

Jaanvi Gopalakrishnan, from India CATEGORY PRIZE, COMMUNITYThis is Edinburgh summer life as we know it: blue skies, tall trees, green grass that seems endless. But more than that, it is the incredible community. Sharing stories over barbecues, having frisbee competitions, reading books, loving the cool breeze: it’s the epitome of good vibes in Edinburgh.

Bowen Wang, from ChinaEveryone fond of symmetry will love this viewpoint of the Museum. There is a balance of aesthetics and harmony between the left and right; a Blakean ‘fearful symmetry’ of the philosophical complexity of its knowledge storage, but also one for the undisruptive consistency of life and art.

Sheng Zhu, from China CATEGORY PRIZE, VIEWPOINTSCompared with sunny Edinburgh, I actually prefer the rainy and windy one. The heavy clouds, ancient buildings and city skyline create a sense of dignity. Taken at the top of Calton Hill.

Vlada Kravtsova, from Russia CATEGORY PRIZE, EXPERIENCESA long walk.
Sergio Muñoz, from Spain
Discovering Edinburgh meant more than visiting its monuments and photographing its landscapes. We had the chance to develop new friendships and join an international and multicultural group with which we shared a trip to Arthur’s Seat and some awe-inspiring views of the city.
Lei Guo, from China
After taking the mid-term exam, I walked from Hugh Robson building to my dormitory. Suddenly, I was caught by the charming scenery. The shadow of the trees on the vintage building, against the blue sky. So beautiful!
Show me Edinburgh AbroadEach year hundreds of students at the University of Edinburgh go abroad on a range of experiences – to study as part of their degree via student exchanges, to undertake research, on projects or fieldwork trips, to take work placements, to work as volunteers or simply to take part in optional cultural and international experiences.
www.ed.ac.uk/go-abroadThe ‘Abroad’ category in the photography competition was open to students who have been abroad as part of their student experience and to the many online and distance learning students who study in a range of countries worldwide.
John Maunder, from AustraliaA masters degree by online distance learning allows me to study wherever my work takes me.
Glenn Ferguson, from ScotlandNew adventures, new places and new friends - priceless. Le Petit Prince Statue, Gamcheon Village, Busan, South Korea. I visited Korea while studying abroad in Tokyo.
Ben Field, from UKVolcán Acatenango, Guatemala
Tycho Toothaker, from USAView of the Sacré-Coeur and Montmartre at sunset from my flat in Paris during my Erasmus exchange.
Alice Bromfield, from UK - CATEGORY PRIZE, ABROADWoke up at 2am in the back of my car in a Walmart parking lot in Bend, Oregon. Drove for 3 hours in the dark to get to Crater Lake National Park for sunrise. Worth it.
The images in this calendar were selected from our 9th annual photography competition. Each year the competition aims to highlight and celebrate our diverse student population and the value of international experiences.
The theme of the competition was Show Me Edinburgh. The competition invited entries in four categories - Viewpoints, Experiences, Community, and Abroad.
Through the photographs submitted we see Edinburgh and experiences beyond the city from the perspecitve of the student community, with over 290 entries representing 59 nationalities. Thank you to all who entered.
