2018 annual report - woodlands
TRANSCRIPT
Dear Friends,
The Woodlands celebrated two milestones in 2018, both significant and
impactful: the 20th anniversary of The Woodlands as a free-standing
organization, and the passing of The Woodlands’ founder, Dr. Donald H. Reigel.
It is my hope that this report captures both the growth of The Woodlands and
the tremendous influence Dr. Reigel had throughout.
The Woodlands’ campus has changed dramatically since its establishment
in 1937 as a summer camp for underserved youth of Western Pennsylvania.
The metamorphosis began in 1985, under the vision of Dr. Reigel, when the
Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania (SBAWP) leased the property
as a location for summer programs for children with spina bifida. During the
next 14 years, two capital campaigns raised more than $4.7 million resulting
in a dramatic expansion in administration and programming and numerous
capital improvements that transformed the campus into a state-of-the-art, fully
accessible facility.
The SBAWP formally established The Woodlands Foundation as a 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organization in 1998 to assume full responsibility for managing the
campus and expanding the reach beyond those with spina bifida to children,
young adults, and adults with numerous disabilities and chronic illness. In 2006,
The Woodlands acquired ownership of the property ensuring the continued use
and development of this regional resource.
Today, The Woodlands’ serves thousands of participants annually in either
residential or non-residential programs and partners with agencies and
organizations to host camps, retreats and other programming. Guided by Dr.
Reigel’s emphasis on service, a committed Board of Directors and a strategic
plan to enhance and expand program offerings and the use of our campus, The
Woodlands is driven by our mission to enrich the lives of those we serve and
grateful to the many individuals, corporations and foundations that have helped
us along the way.
Sincerely,
Joseph R. Milharcic
Executive Director

When I observe our participants, I am always left with a special sense of community that exists between themselves and with our staff—a culture of belonging,
accepting, growing, and caring in part because of what they experience at The Woodlands.

IN LOVING MEMORY of The
Woodlands’ founder, Dr. Donald
H. Reigel, renowned pediatric
neurosurgeon, innovator, guiding
force, and tireless
advocate for children.
The vision Dr. Reigel
created along with his
wife, Gay, to enrich the
lives of children and
adults with disability
and chronic illness has
impacted thousands of
individuals and their
families. With heavy
hearts, The Woodlands will carry on
Dr. Reigel’s legacy in his memory.
A C o m p a s s i o n at e L e a d e rDr. Reigel was Founder and
Chairman Emeritus of The Woodlands
Foundation. Widely recognized by his
pediatric neurosurgical colleagues
throughout North America for his
interest in research and academic
excellence, Dr. Reigel published 125
scientific articles and contributed to
the contents of over 20 textbooks. In
1976, he organized and hosted the
founding meeting of the American
Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery.
Since that time, Dr. Reigel served in all
of the Society’s offices, including the
Presidency. Dr. Reigel was a founding
member of the American Board of
Pediatric Neurological Surgery and
served as Chairman of the Board when
its first 100 certificates were awarded.
He also served in a leadership
capacity for the International Society
of Pediatric Neurosurgery and chaired
the Pediatric Section of the American
Association of Neurological Surgeons.
Dr. Reigel’s outstanding reputation
as a pediatric neurosurgeon brought
“added value” to his personal
commitment to ensure that his
thousands of patients lived a full life in
their community.
A History of Advocacy1 9 3 7 - 2 0 1 8
The Woodlands is where children and adults with disability
and chronic illness find the freedom and empowerment to
experience programs that enrich lives. Fully accessible and
barrier-free facilities open new doors to safe, inclusive and
engaging participant opportunities. Our staff is committed
to facilitating social, cultural, environmental, recreational
and spiritual growth through hands-on experiences.
THE NOTES FROM THE HEART MUSIC PROGRAM started in
1999 when a group of musical
artists and music lovers in the
Pittsburgh area came together with a
desire to create a summer program
that would bring the joy of music to
children and adults with disabilities
and chronic illness. After a series of
special musical presentations and
a pilot music retreat, the need for a
dedicated program was apparent.
Today, Notes from the Heart offers
a year-round program to include
two week-long residential summer
camps and a full music ensemble held
throughout the academic year. The
music program offers a wide variety of
activities and programs that range from
music appreciation, theory, composition,
singing, and instrument playing under
the guidance of internationally and
locally known musicians, artists,
conductors and educators.

Developed in partnership with
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh
of UPMC (CHP), Camp Inspire
is one of the few camps in the United
States that is specifically designed for
children and teens who are ventilator-
dependent. The Camp provides a
6-day, 5-night residential experience
that will inspire memories and learning
for a lifetime. Camp Inspire is a place
where youth with tracheostomies,
ventilators, and BiPAP machines
can be themselves with all barriers
removed – and just be a kid! In
addition to having a memorable week-
long adventure packed with joy, this
social experience provides campers
with the chance to interact with other
children with similar situations.
THE BLOOM PROGRAM
Transitional life skills programs
for adolescents function as a
bridge between school programs
and the opportunities of adult life. In
partnership with Children’s Hospital
of Pittsburgh of UPMC, the Building
Lifestyles for Ongoing Opportunities
& Movement Program (BLOOM) was
conceptualized in 2014 as a reverse
inclusion program for adolescents
with and without disabilities between
the ages 13-21. Adolescents with
disabilities are paired with a typically
developing peer to share in activities
that focus on hands-on, inclusive
and collaborative experiences.
The program includes a one-week
residential summer camp and bi-
weekly sessions during the academic
year that are centered on post-
school outcomes in the areas of
leadership, empowerment, teamwork,
independence and health and
wellness. BLOOM empowers teens
to take on life outside of school while
building social and emotional skills
that will be beneficial in all aspects of
their lives.

THE WOODLANDSEnergized by the camp experience, SBAWP leases the land for summer and developmental programs starting in 1985. Shortly thereafter, the property’s name is changed to The Woodlands.
IT TAKES A VILLAGEA series of capital development projects, primarily funded by charitable dollars, help establish The Woodlands as a premier facility designed to help children and adults learn and improve life skills through social, recreation, spiritual and environmental enrichment.
1995
ALL ARE WELCOMESBAWP conducts a strategic planning process in 1995, which establishes the goal of opening the property to all people with disability and chronic illness.

Through collaborative relationships
with numerous colleges and
universities, The Woodlands
has become a referral source and a
training ground for students in health,
education, or human service fields of
study. Over the course of 2018, 89
seasonal staff positions were filled from
27 different colleges and universities
for the positions of counselors, unit
coordinators, life skills and recreation
activity instructors, and healthcare
associates for either 8-10 weeks in
the summer (during which staff are
in residence at The Woodlands), or
for weekend retreats and special
programming held throughout the
academic year. The Woodlands has
proved to be the perfect environment
to supplement academic and
theoretical experience as program
staff positions offer hands-on exposure
to a multitude of disabilities; provide
students with opportunities for
internships; practical job experience;
and service learning.
In order to prepare the summer
program staff, The Woodlands
developed Camp Academy, an
intensive, one-week training course
that occurs the week prior to the start
of summer programming. During Camp
Academy, professionals including
physical therapists, registered nurses
and behavior specialists conduct
workshops specific to their areas of
expertise so that trainees can learn
techniques and strategies that will
ensure the optimal care and safety of
those we serve.

began in 2002 as a way to find
assistance with maintenance needs
such as raking leaves, painting,
cleaning, and landscaping while
providing corporations and groups
with community service projects.
The benefits are many: in addition to
providing in-kind labor, the Program
offers the opportunity for The
Woodlands to showcase our facility to
those who live and work in the greater
community.

The Woodlands’ adapted par-
3 golf course, designed by
nationally known golf course
architect Dominic Palombo, ASLA,
is specifically configured to provide
individuals with disabilities the
opportunity to learn, play, and
appreciate the game of golf. The
only facility of its kind in the region,
this 9-hole course offers a unique
experience for individuals learning the
game of golf or returning to the game
after a setback from injury or illness.
In addition to offering Woodlands’
participants the opportunity to
discover the game of golf, The
Woodlands proudly continues its
partnership with the Professional
Golfers’ Association of America’s
Helping Our Patriots Everywhere
(HOPE) program. PGA’s HOPE
program provides golf as a therapeutic
rehabilitation tool for military veterans.
The program is designed to enhance
rehabilitation, both physically and
socially. PGA professional instructors,
working with participants on a 5-1 ratio,
provide instruction on adaptive golf
techniques and fundamentals utilizing
The Woodlands’ golf course and
specialized equipment.

Every year since I was eight years old, I have come to the Notes from the Heart camp with the ambition of doing something meaningful.
One year, I got to emcee the final concert alongside conductor and teacher Edward
Cumming. Another year, I performed songs that I co-wrote with conductor Lucas Richman, also a teacher. I think this is one of the best music
programs anywhere. Great things happen here.

I think the best part of the experience for our son, Patrick, is the confidence he gained from being away from
home, first for a day, then a weekend and finally a full week. The staff at The Woodlands were able to quickly get to know him as an individual and understand what worked
and what didn’t in terms of his involvement in activities. Some he tried, others he didn’t, but he developed his own
identity and sense of self. At the end of the day, that is really all we would want for any of our kids!
