2 PLANNED PARENTHOOD MID-HUDSON VALLEY

I am incredibly grateful to Planned Parenthood for providing me with care when I did not have the means to have medical coverage. Then, when my son reached an age when he became sexually active, I brought him to PPMHV to get educated and tested for STDs. I really wanted him to understand the responsibility that comes with adulthood, and with his father out of the picture, I was grateful to PP for helping me, as a single parent, start these important conversations with my children.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT 3

A Message from Our Chair and President & CEOThe year 2018 saw the escalation of concerted attempts to reduce women and trans people’s access to health care, including abortions and contraception. The map to the left projects the dire situation we are facing in terms of access to abortion. And where there is no access or severely limited access, affordable contraception is hard to come by as well. This is an untenable situation. The fact is that abortions are at an all time low since Roe v. Wade. And the availability of affordable contraceptives and long-acting reversible contraceptives is clearly a primary reason for the decline. Affordable contraceptives for the most vulnerable and low-income populations can be attributed to Title X, the only national family planning funding which was signed into existence in 1970 by Richard M. Nixon. If there were a true desire to eliminate abortions, birth control should be available free on every street corner.

However, the very opposite is happening. In 2018 the Trump-Pence administration began a rule making process that would preclude any abortion provider from accessing contraceptive and preventive health funding through Title X and forbid any Title X recipient from even talking to an individual about their options. Even if a patient requested information about an abortion it would not be able to be given or that provider would lose their family planning grant.

As we turned the corner into 2019, this proposed new rule came within days of going into effect. Successful litigation by Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, the American Medical Association and the American Civil Liberties Union resulted in temporary injunctions. But make no mistake, this war is not over.

Our supporters stand with us in many ways through joining us as activists, as donors, and as volunteers. We will need you more than ever in 2019. OUR GRANDCHILDREN SHOULD NOT HAVE TO FIGHT A BATTLE THEIR GRANDMOTHERS ALREADY WON. But this time the fight is not just about safe, legal abortions. It is also about our right to access contraception!

Thank you so much for your support in 2018. We will need you even more in 2019.

Sincerely,

Helen Ullrich Ruth-Ellen Blodgett Chair President & CEO
