2018 Annual ReportDear Friends,

At Caring House, residents and families, hospice teams, and Caring House donors, volunteers and staff all come together to do something wonderful -- improve the end-of-life experience for men and women and families.

2018 was our second full year of operations. We welcomed 77 residents and families. That’s a nice boost from 18 and 45 welcomed in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

Please help keep the momentum going by volunteering or donating or helping to spread the word. On behalf of the many residents and loved ones whose lives will be touched by your support, thank you.

Sincerely,

Edward W. Long, JDVolunteer and President

Caring House and HospiceWe welcome residents who are using Medicare-certifi ed hospice services. Hospice service teams offer medical care and pain and symptom management, as well as spiritual support, counseling and education. Hospice team members visit those residents and provide vital support to them and their loved ones, in collaboration with our staff.

Residents and families select a hospice service before the resident comes to Caring House. Sixteen distinct hospice services have now served our residents.

Volunteers Make Us StrongIn 2018, 47 Caring House volunteers teamed to give more than 6,025 hours of their time and energy. That’s more than 16.5 hours per day, seven days a week.

In dollar terms, that’s a $148,000 combined gift in support of Caring House residents and loved ones (based on Independent Sector’s $24.69/hour value of volunteer time in 2018).

We’re looking for additional capable and caring volunteers. See yourcaringhouse.org/volunteer

Caring House is a beautiful, peaceful, and idyllic oasis for end-of-life hospice. The serene atmosphere and caring staff helped transform a diffi cult time into one of heartfelt refl ection and gentle acceptance. The loss of my father Ron was diffi cult, but Caring House provided invaluable assistance with the transition and made his fi nal days comfortable, while creating a nurturing environment for those of us in his family. Thank you and God bless everyone at Caring House.

— Michael Kelley, son of Ron Kelley, Caring House resident

Caring House was a Godsend to our family. We were suddenly faced with the fact that my father was not going to get better after his surgery as we had hoped for. You were recommended by the hospital and others that we had talked to. My father passed in dignity, comfort, peace and was surrounded by love. The family was able to spend the last days with my dad in quality time as his children rather than as his caregivers. Bless you all.

— Donna Wilson, daughter of John Wilson, Caring House resident

2018 Financial Highlights

They care not only for the resident, but for the family as well. Such attention to the smallest details of care. I would recommend Caring House to anyone looking for a peaceful place for their loved one to spend what time they have left...

Rolf (my husband) was called “Special K” by many of his high school students. I call Caring House “Special CH” because it fulfi lls every one of the synonyms in my online dictionary: exceptional, unusual, singular, uncommon, notable, noteworthy, remarkable, outstanding, unique. Caring House is aptly named; it is fi lled with the most caring people I have ever met.

Words can only begin to describe how grateful I am that we were able to be with you in my dad’s fi nal weeks. You made his time left on earth really “living,” instead of waiting to die. We were able to make some beautiful memories that I will always cherish, even as the tears continue to fl ow. I miss you all and hope to visit when I am healed enough.
