FROM OUR LEADERSHIPHappy 2019 everyone! I am here to tell you about how amazing 2018 was for Hope Cottage. As many of you already know, we celebrated 100 years of serving the Dallas communitythrough education, counseling and adoption services on June 1, 2018. 100 years! There areless than 20 companies, both non-profit and corporate, in the Dallas area that can share thatunique distinction and we are very proud to now be one of them. Last June, Hope Cottage celebrated with a festive and casual evening of dinner, dancingand sharing of memories in a beautiful setting overlooking the historic Lakewood CountyClub, which opened in 1912.

Brooks Quinlan

2018 saw the highest turnout in recent history at both of our annual family events. We had a record year of fund and friend-raising and 88 children experienced safety and security through our adoption programs. It was truly a year to celebrate and weare excited about our momentum taking us into the next 100 years!

"New friendships were made and old ones rekindled."

Brooks Quinlan, LMSW-APChief Executive Officer

In 2018, we celebrated our 100th year birthday in true Texas style! The Lakewood CountryClub provided the perfect backdrop to host this grand, yet relaxed, affair imbuing feelingsof warmth, community, and HOME! Days after the birthday party I went to our new officeson Texas Street. As I walked along the porch and sat in the rocking chair that bears mydaughter’s name, I was filled with awe and gratitude. Hope Cottage has truly stood thetest of time. Few non-profits can say that. I’ve had the privilege of being part of the HopeCottage family for over 9 years. First as an adoptive Mom, and then as a Board memberfor over 6 years. Hope Cottage is in my blood. I suspect you feel the same. As ourillustrious organization moves into the next 100 years, I encourage you to stay engaged, attend an event, volunteer your time and certainly consider becoming a sustaining giftgiver. On behalf of the 2018 Board of Directors, thank YOU for being part of the Hope Cottagefamily.

COUNSELINGKayla was homeless, living under a bridge and pregnant. Unsure of what to do, she reached out to a social service agency inher town who in turn put her in touch with Hope Cottage. Kayla was able to meet the next day with a Hope Cottage casemanager. Her case manager helped Kayla find housing, drove her to her doctor appointments and provided counseling asKayla and her boyfriend decided whether to parent or place their child for adoption. After many, many hours of careful, thoughtful consideration, the young couple decided that making an adoption plan was the best thing for their child. Afterplacing their child for adoption, Kayla continued to meet with her case manager for several months.

PROGRAM SERVICES

Lorely was 6 months pregnant when she and Roger first came to Hope Cottage. They had beenreferred by Guiding Star El Paso, one of our partner agencies. This was their first child and theywanted to be the best parents they could be for their son, but they knew they needed help. Prior totheir son’s birth, Roger and Lorely met regularly with their case manager, Michelle, taking classes inchild development, strength based parenting, and child safety. After their son was born in August2018, they continued to meet with Michelle for additional support. Lorely says “We have learned somuch. I am even sharing what I have learned through Hope Cottage with my friends and familymembers who are pregnant.” Your gifts helped nurture this family. Thank you!

In 1999, Hope Cottage began offering adoption education in high schools with a program called “Giving Life a Second Chance”(renamed ABCs of Adoption in 2010). Fast forward to today and the Education Department has expanded to include not onlyeducation around adoption awareness (ABCs of Adoptions and Understanding Infant Adoption for healthcare professionals andsocial workers) but healthy decision making and relationships (Relationship Smarts Plus) and Parenting Education. Roger andLorely were two of the parents who participated in our Parenting Education Program. During 2018, Hope Cottage partneredwith more than 50 hospitals, clinics, social service agencies and schools to offer free educational programming to more than4,500 youth, nurses and social workers, including all the school nurses in Region 10. None of this would have been possiblewithout your support. To see a complete list of community partners see page 7.

ADOPTION SERVICESDuring 2018, you made it possible for 88 children to be placed in loving, adoptive homes. Children like Justin and hisbrother Michael. Justin first entered foster care in the summer of 2017 as a 10 month old who was severely dehydrated andmedically neglected. His first night in his new home was spent in the Emergency Room as his Hope Cottage foster parentsmade sure he received fluids and necessary medical care. During the next 12 months, Justin grew into a healthy, confident, loving toddler and came to know his foster parents as “mama” and “dada.” In June 2018, CPS reunified Justin with hisbiological parents. In September 2018, Justin’s Hope Cottage foster parents received a call from CPS. CPS told theparents Justin was being removed from his biological family for good and asked them if they were willing to take both Justinand his newborn baby brother, Michael, into their home. The foster parents did not hesitate and within a few hours, CPSarrived with both boys. The boys are both thriving and growing. Their adoption will be finalized soon.
