ST JOSEPH’S VILLA I 2018 Annual Impact Report2
Children and families often come to the Villa at a crossroads in their lives. They may be parents searching for a specialized school that can accommodate their child’s unique needs, when nowhere else will accept them. Or a young adult with no familial supports faced with living on the street. A child in mental health crisis may need a safe place to stay and work through a traumatic experience with a compassionate counselor. When all seems lost, they find hope again at the Villa. Our dedicated team helps them explore their potential, realize the possibility for a brighter future, and live into it.
Exploration and discovery happen daily on our campus and in our community-based services. Our Career and Transition Services worked with a record number of students this year, offering hands-on learning and networking opportunities to help them explore their strengths, develop their passions, and start on productive paths after high school. Students also have a new way to explore the outdoors in our Youth Fitness Park, designed to promote children’s physical and mental health. We have completed Phase I of construction and look forward to beginning Phase II next year.
As we have grown into a leading resource in mental health, autism, education and homeless services, we have also increased our advocacy efforts to strengthen the voices of those we serve. Many of our expert staff actively participated with community partners at the Virginia General Assembly this year, hosted legislators on our campus, and gave testimony at state budget hearings. Our mission is to create lasting change in the lives of our children and families, not only while they’re with us at the Villa, but far into the future.
Villa friends like you elevate lives each and every day. We hope you enjoy reading about the differences you have made possible in our Annual Impact Report. With your partnership, we will continue exploring our community’s most critical emerging needs, and innovating solutions that elevate our shared community.
Thank you for supporting St. Joseph’s Villa. Sincerely,
Cynthia P. Balderson Kathleen Burke Barrett
Chair, Board of Trustees Chief Executive Officer

23ST JOSEPH’S VILLA I 2018 Annual Impact Report22
Brook Road Academy at St. Joseph’s Villa is definitely one of a kind. The teachers never gave up on me. They had confidence in me when I didn’t have confidence in myself.” – Matt, Brook Road Academy graduate

The archways of St. Joseph’s Villa have been open to our community’s most vulnerable and underserved children and families 24 hours a day, seven days a week since 1834. That’s more than 1,612,900 continuous hours! Every hour of our entire history, individual philanthropy has enabled us to anticipate emerging needs and create innovative solutions that change the hope and promise of people’s lives.
By remembering the Villa’s work in their estate plans, Archway Society members elevate the communities we serve for lifetimes to come.

Davinia elevated her future at the Villa. Now she’s elevating others.
Davinia was a fighter before she came to the Villa six years ago. She inserted herself into volatile situations, argued, fought, and couldn’t let any conflict go. She wanted nothing to do with public school.
dooley school at st. Joseph’s Villa helped davinia get to a good place.
“I feel like the staff respect me. They have to remind me of the rules sometimes, but each day I speak to them and they speak to me… every last one of them.”
Davinia says Dooley School staff helped teach her patience, to ignore negativity, and to listen to what others have to say. Today she’s sharing her lessons learned by serving as a mentor to Dooley School’s elementary students, and helping them reduce the same behavioral issues she once had. She does her best to model how working hard in school can help you succeed.
“I love kids. They’re amazing and hilarious. Working with them brings joy to me,” she said.
Davinia plans to graduate from high school this year. She’s preparing for her next chapter with help from the Villa’s Career and Transition Services (CATS). Through the CATS program, Davinia has toured local universities and gained hands-on work experience at the Villa’s campus training sites like the culinary arts center. She also works with staff to organize the Donation Center and the Dooley School library, and keep them welcoming for other Villa students. CATS even helped Davinia register to vote so she can go to the polls with her grandmother.
Davinia eventually hopes to attend a four-year college and pursue a career in the arts. Villa supporters like you are elevating futures and turning dreams like Davinia’s into reality.
Year after year, I’ve been so impressed with St. Joseph’s Villa and its employees. I know their dedication and passion for the mission. When you choose your charity wisely, you can be comfortable making contributions.” – Archway Society Member Kathleen C. Duke
Villa volunteer leader and former Trustee
