ALLEGHENY FOOTBALL HISTORY

SENIOR SENDOFF: Today marks the final game in the career of 16 Gator seniors: Tyler Balla, Zach Bednarowicz, Marcus Davenport, Ethan Graubard, Francisco Guzman, Logan Lee, Craye Nehler, David Perez, Jake Reidenbach, Tristan Rhoad-es, Brandon Sellers, Tyler Stouffer, Jonah Tanner, Karol Vargas, Seth Warburton and Cody Wendt.

SERIES HISTORY: The Gators and Yeomen have met 51 times previously. Allegheny owns a 27-23-1 led in the series. Last season, the Yeomen picked up a 63-37 win in Oberlin. The Gators last win against the Yeomen came in 2016 when they won 26-21 in front of a homecoming crowd in Meadville.

RUNNING WILD: Senior Tyler Balla ran for 131 yards last week at Wabash. That marked his fifth 100-yard rushing perfor-mance of the season, and the tenth of his career. The senior currently ranks third in the NCAC with 891 rushing yards, and is tied for fourth with nine rushing touch-downs. His 111-yard performance at Ken-yon three weeks ago pushed him over the 2,000 yard mark for his career, just the 10th Gator to do so.

GOTTA CATCH THEM ALL: Last week, ju-nior wide receiver Alex Victor caught 12 passes for 159 yards. His reception total was the fourth most in a single game in Ga-tor history. On the season, Victor has 933 receiving yards on just 48 catches (19.4 per catch) and nine touchdowns. He also reached the end zone on three runs. The junior is already the Gators’ all-time lead-er in receiving yards (2,524) and receiving touchdowns (29) in just 28 games.

RETURN LEADERS: Tristan Rhoades and Chase Balla sit atop the NCAC in kick re-turn yards. Rhoades currently leads with 528 return yards on 23 attempts, while Balla has 420 yards on 16 attempts. Balla had the longest return of the season for the Gators at Wabash, taking his first return of the day 74 yards downfield.

GAME #10 ♦ ALLEGHENY vs. OBERLIN ♦ NOVEMBER 10, 2018 ♦ FRANK B. FUHRER FIELD

IN THE RANKINGSAllegheny players among top five in NCAC

KICKING IT INTO HIGH GEAR: Two weeks ago against DePauw, senior kicker Zach Bednarowicz hit a pair of field goals, in-cluding the game winner with 11 seconds left to give the Gators a 20-19 win. Last week at Wabash, the senior hit a 22-yard attempt. That make was the 12th of the season for Bednarowicz, which tied him with three others for the second most in a single season for a Gator. He current-ly leads the Gators with 60 points on the season.

PICKING APART THE COMPETITION: In the win against DePauw, the Gators inter-cepted three passes, bringing their season total up to fourteen. The fourteen picks are tied for the most in a single season for the Gators since they hit the same total back in 2009. They also share a lead with Wit-tenberg in the conference in that category. Individually, Quinten Hunt is tied for sec-ond in the NCAC with three interceptions. Clarence Long, Charles Ross and Moses Snell Jr. each have a pair of picks.

UNDER PRESSURE: Throughout the year, the Gator defense has been able to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Al-legheny is currently tied for second in the NCAC with 32 sacks on the season. Only DePauw has more sacks with 33. Individ-ually, Chase Balla is tied for third with 6.5 sacks while Marcus Davenport is tied for fifth with 6.0. Nationally, Allegheny is tied for 13th in total sacks.

I’LL “TAKE GIVE ME THE BALL” FOR 500, ALEX: The Gators have forced 18 fumbles this season. Seth Warburton is currently tied for first in the NCAC with four forces. As a team, the Gators are third in the NCAC with 10 fumble recoveries. Combined with their 14 interceptions the Gators are tied with Ohio Wesleyan for the most take-aways in the conference.

CAPTAINS OF THE SWAMP: Allegheny’s five co-captains for the 2018 season in-clude senior defensive tackle Marcus Dav-enport, senior receiver Tristan Rhoades, senior running back Tyler Balla, junior line-backer Corey Laskey, and junior receiver Alex Victor.

The Gators answered an opening drive Wabash touchdown with one of their own, but the Little Giants outscored the Gators 27-3 the rest of the second half to pull away.

The Little Giants (8-1, 7-1 NCAC) totaled 590 yards of total offense, with 426 coming on the ground as they defeated the Gators (5-4, 5-3 NCAC).

Tyler Balla led the way for the Gator rushing game, netting 131 yards on the ground. It marked his fifth 100-yard performance of the season. Logan Lee completed 19-of-35 passes for 237 yards. Alex Victor caught 12 of those passes for 159 yards. The 12 receptions tied Victor for the fourth most in a single game for the Gators. Victor also scored both Gator touchdowns on the ground.

Wabash received the opening kickoff and strung together a nine-play, 66-yard drive over the opening four minutes, culminating in an eight-yard Jake Reid pass to Ra’Shawn Jones.

The Gators were quick to respond. Chase Balla took the ensuing kickoff a season-high 74-yards down the field to the Wabash 12-yard line. Four plays later on 3rd-and-8, Victor carried the ball in from 10-yards out. A Zach Bednarowicz extra point tied the game at seven.

The next Little Giant drive was capped off by a 36-yard touchdown pass from Reid to Jones to push their lead to 14-7 midway through the open-ing quarter.

The next two drives ended in three-and-outs.

Heading into the second quarter, the Gators were driving down the field, but Brock Heffron stepped in front of a Lee pass to end the drive. Wa-bash took advantage of the Gator miscue as four plays later, Isaac Avant scored on a run from nine-yards out. The Little Giants missed the extra point attempt, but their lead grew to 20-7.

After holding the Gators to a three-and-out, the Little Giants scored their fourth touchdown of the half. A six-play, 60-yard drive ended with a Reid 31-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Thomas, making it 27-7.

The Gators answered with a long 15 play drive. Tyler Balla accounted for 38 of the 64 yards on the drive which ended in a Bednarowicz 22-yard field goal, cutting the lead to 27-10. The field goal was Bednzrowicz’s 12th of the season, which ties him for the second most in a single sea-son for the Gators.

The Little Giants were pinned at their own two-yard line on the kickoff, but Avant broke through on the first play for a 98-yard touchdown to close the scoring for the half.

The first drive of the second half for Allegheny ended in an interception by Jamari Washington, which was returned to the Gator 11-yard line. Three plays later, Avant lunged in from two-yards out to make it 41-10.

After forcing a Gator punt, the Little Giants tacked on another rushing touchdown, this time from Micah Walker from one-yard out. Wabash would score their final touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter on a two-yard Tanner Skeel run.

The Gators responded on the following drive with another Victor rushing touchdown. Balla once again proved to be a force on the drive account-ing for 41 rushing yards. Victor capped off the eight-play, 69-yard drive with a seven-yard score.

Tristan Rhoades and Dwaine Barber hauled in three passes apiece for 33 and 23 yards, respectively.

Balla averaged 4.9 yards per carry on his 27 attempts. Victor added 12 yards on three carries.

Defensively, Francisco Guzman led the way for the Gators with 11 total tackles. Kyle McGee totaled seven tackles while Quinten Hunt and Chase Balla had six apiece. Bryan Lopez provided the lone Gator sack.

Chase Balla totaled 99 kickoff return yards.

Avant led the Little Giant offense with 229 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries. Reid threw for 164 yards and three touchdowns.

2018 ALLEGHENY FOOTBALL

ALLEGHENY COACHING STAFF

B.J. Hammer was named the 34th head coach in Allegheny football program history on January 4, 2016.

After posting a 1-9 mark in his first season at Allegheny in 2016, the program’s rebuilding took big strides in 2017, as the Gators finished 3-7 while posting prolific numbers on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Allegheny averaged 34.0 points and 449.6 yards per game, both of which were the Gators’ most since 2002. Sophomore Alex Victor earned First Team All-NCAC honors after setting school records for receiving yards (1,037) and touchdowns (15), while Tyler Balla became the first Gator running back to earn All-NCAC laurels after rushing for 955 yards and 10 touchdowns. Quarterback Logan Lee also had a record-breaking season, setting new Gator single-season marks in nearly every passing category, including completions (214), yards (3,002), and touchdowns (33).

The 2017 Gator defense also saw a pair of All-NCAC recipients. Defensive end Colten Buzard set a new Allegheny single-season mark with 20.5 tackles for loss, while tying a 17-year old school record with 12.0 sacks. Defensive back Chase Balla became the first Gator rookie to earn All-NCAC honors since 2014, as he finished with a team-best 73 tackles while breaking up five passes.

In his first season at the helm, Hammer saw a pair of his players earn All-NCAC honors, including senior John McFarland and junior Jake Wilson. McFarland ended his career as one of the most prolific tight ends in program history, and hauled in 48 catches for 552 yards. Wilson established an NCAA Division III record with 1,268 kick return yards, averaging 24.5 yards per try, and breaking off five returns of 50 yards or longer. As a team, the Gator offense saw an increase of an average of 9.0 points and 83 yards per game from the 2015 season, while the team’s pass defense ranked in the top five of the NCAC.

Hammer arrived at Allegheny after spending five seasons as the defensive coordinator at fellow North Coast Athletic Conference member Wabash College. There, he led a defensive unit that consistently ranked among NCAA Division-III’s best. During his five-year tenure, the Little Giants posted a record of 51-7, making three appearances in the NCAA Division-III playoffs and winning NCAC championships in 2011 and 2015. He mentored the NCAC Defensive Player of the Year in four of his five seasons as defensive coordinator, while 22 Wabash defenders were First Team All-NCAC honorees, and four were named All-America. In 2015, the Little Giants finished 12-1, including a perfect 8-0 in the NCAC, and advanced to the third round of the NCAA playoffs. Hammer’s defense ranked third nationally with 26 interceptions, fourth in rushing defense (72.2 yds/g), fifth in total defense (240.9 yds/g), and seventh in quarterback sacks (42). Eight Little Giant defenders earned All-NCAC honors, including six First Team selections. Wabash ended the year ranked seventh in both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and D3Football.com Top 25 polls. In 2014, Hammer was named a Division-III Coordinator of the Year finalist after his unit led D-III in rushing defense (66.3 yds/g) and quarterback sacks (4.6 sacks/g), while ranking third in total defense, fifth in tackles for loss, and 12th in scoring defense. Little Giant linebacker Cody Buresh was named the NCAC Defensive Player of the Year and All-America by both D3Football.com and the AFCA.

The 2013 Wabash defense led the nation in total defense (220.7 yds/g), fumbles recovered (19), and turnover margin (+24), while placing second in tackles for loss (11.6 TFL/g) and rushing defense (63.1). In 2012, the Little Giants placed eighth nationally in scoring defense and 10th in rushing defense, while linebacker CJ Gum earned the NCAC Defensive Player of the Year award for a second straight season. In his first season as the Wabash defensive coordinator, the Little Giants ranked fifth in the nation in rushing defense (78.1 yds/g), 11th in scoring defense (12.9 pts/g), and 12th in total defense (249.4 yds/g), while they paced the NCAC in every defensive statistical category. In addition to Gum being named the conference’s top defender, linebacker AJ Akinribade was named NCAC Newcomer of the Year. Prior to his five-year tenure at Wabash, Hammer spent eight seasons on the football staff at Whittier College. After working as the Poets’ defensive coordinator from 2003-05, Hammer was promoted to head coach, a position he held from 2006-10. Posting a 12-33 overall record, Hammer rebuilt a program that had just 13 players on its roster in 2003 to one that averaged a roster size of over 100. Thirty Whittier players were named All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), while the Whitter defense ranked second in the conference in total defense in 2006, and its rushing offense ranked second in the SCIAC in both 2009 and 2010. Before his stint in California, Hammer spent the 2002 season as the linebackers coach at Heidelberg College, after beginning his coaching career in 2001 as the outside linebackers coach at Wabash. Hammer graduated from Wabash in 2001, and is regarded as one of the top defenders to ever suit up for the Little Giants. He graduated as the school’s record holder for tackles for loss in a game (five), season (23), and career (58), as well as single-season sacks (15), while he is tied with younger brother Blair as the Little Giants’ all-time record holder in career sacks with 27.5. Team captain in 2000, Hammer was a two-time All-American and three-time All-Conference honoree, and was named the 2001 Pete Vaughn Award, which is given annually to the top Wabash senior athlete as voted upon by the athletic department. A native of Carmel, Indiana, Hammer and wife Emily are the parents of daughters Layla and Ellie, and son William. They reside in Meadville.
