Rotating:

ArtSpotJH Public Art curates the only rotating public art installation in the valley - the ArtSpot. This high-visibility installation is passed by more than 30,000 daily drivers commuting to and from the town of Jackson. The ArtSpot is a professional development opportunity for artists who are inspired to create public art.

Danny Shervin poured gunpowder on canvas before setting it on fire, leaving the burned images. For Danny, it was a unique opportunity to amplify his art and stretch his gunpowder medium -- nearly 2 lbs. of it -- beyond anything he has ever tried.

Transforming:

Stickum Up!JH Public Art facilitated a temporary downtown mural walk during the 2018 Fall Arts Festival. Ten local artists submitted high-resolution images of their work, and businesses agreed to allow images to be pasted onto their walls. The murals activated alleyways with art that was fun and accessible to all while helping to revitalize overlooked and mundane spaces. Look for an expanded event in 2019!

Collaborating:

Mobile StudioIn its second year, JH Public Art, Hole Food Rescue, Teton Literacy, and Teton County Library provided art activities, books, and food to local neighborhoods throughout Jackson. Led by Cal Brackin and supported by volunteer community members, the program engaged youth with art activities and family members with pop-up community dinners.

Elk Shed by Bland HokeJackson Hole Children’s MuseumBland Hoke and Children’s Museum staff guided 3rd-5th grade students through a hands-on process to develop ideas and models, which were provided to JHHS FabLab students to create a final design. Bland Hoke used this design to weave and weld the climbable sculpture, inspiredby the natural form of an elk antler.

Illuminated:

Glow NightsCommunities across the world who are steeped in darkness over winter months celebrate snow and ice with light festivals designed to draw people together. Glow Nights brings vibrancy and beauty in unexpected forms to the Village Commons and invites people to explore their sense of wonder, bringing light to our dark winter nights.

This year’s Glow Nights featured four artists who created illuminated works inspired by the calderas, geysers, peaks, forests, and the phosphorescent microbes of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Town Enclosure by Carney Logan Burke ArchitectsCenter for the Arts Park“The Town Enclosure is a sculptural object located on The Center Park lawn and a backdrop for the various activities this community park supports, but it is much more than a sculpture… Created from a circular composition of timber panels, the Pavilion and the space it creates are both transparent and opaque according to one’s position and perspective. The enclosure is only fully experienced via movement around and within the object,” stated Carney Logan Burke.

The 2018 Pavilion offers Center residents, nonprofits, and community groups an inspiring place to test free, accessible gateway arts experiences with the public. A space that supports informal programming helps to build future arts audiences and raise the visibility of the vibrant art-making that takes place within the Center.

The Pavilion project was conceived of and managed by JH Public Art, which received the 2018 Creative-in-Residence grant from the Center for the Arts.

JH Public Art celebrated our third PARK(ing) Day on September 21, 2018 in downtown Jackson. PARKing Day is a worldwide event where artists, designers, and citizens transform parking spots into temporary public parks. Thea Alvin is an internationally known dry-stack stonemason and sculptor from Morristown, Vermont, who was invited by the Jackson Hole Land Trust to install a new sculpture in Rendezvous Park. Thea’s medium is stone, yet her sculptures defy gravity. Her imagination and innate sense of her material allow her spiraling arches, walkways, and cairns to flow into organic forms that evoke a sense of wonder. Each sculpture uses tons of rock that have been carved and chiseled by hand. Her works are held together by gravity and the careful fitting of each hand-selected slab.

Thea’s site-specific design complements the many patterns of nature and wildlife found in R Park and along the intertwining flow of the Snake.

FoundSpaceThe Jackson Hole Land Trust (JHLT) invited the community to join five local artists at the fourth annual FoundSpace installation at Emily Steven’s Park in Wilson. The event encouraged the community to interact with art installations and explore protected open spaces while celebrating the crossroads of art and conservation. Artist coordination was provided by JH Public Art.

Building STEAM:

Wildlife CrossingsBuilding STEAM is a project facilitated in the Fabrication Lab at JH High School, where students use design and public art to address community issues. Last year, local student Zach Wientjis, in collaboration with Bland Hoke, came up with a reflective animal silhouette design based on the idea that the silhouette should light up at night to alert drivers.

JH Public Art, in cooperation with Bland Design, is pleased to announce a new initiative to use public art to decrease wildlife and vehicle collisions in Teton County by increasing the number of reflective silhouettes in designated wildlife crossing corridors.

JH Public Art will coordinate with local NGOs working in wildlife advocacy to increase awareness of this project and we will partner with private landowners who wish to host animal silhouettes. Bland Design will refine manufacturing efficiency to produce a cost-effective series of silhouettes that can be made available on a large scale.
