of our hopes, our concerns, our dreams, our fears, anything that is on our heart – and in this way opening ourselves to the movement of God’s Spirit in our lives.Q: WHEN SHOULD WE PRAY? A: Before answering, let’s change “should” to “may” or “can.” Framing prayer as a “should” makes it seem like a duty, when prayer, once you get in the habit, is something that brings joy and comfort. With that said, the short answer is anytime ! Great opportunities for prayer are in the morning when we are rst awake and look ahead to what is coming, at evening as we prayer for a night’s rest and re ect on the day past, and before meals to give thanks for the gift of food and all the other gifts we sometimes overlook.Q: WHAT MAKES A GOOD PRAYER?A: Anytime you are talking with God honestly you are praying just ne. Really. ere is no formula and no extra points for sounding particularly “religious.” Some folks have found the acronym ACTS helpful: A=Adoration, what you appreciate about God. C=Confession, what has not gone well or those things for which you want forgiveness. T= anksgiving, those things for which you are most grateful. S=Supplication, those things for which you want to ask for God’s help.Q: AND IF THAT’S A LITTLE COMPLEX FOR A BEGINNER, DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING SIMPLER?A: Yes! One of my favorite quotations about prayer comes from author Anne Lamott, who writes in her book Traveling Mercies that our two best prayers are, “help me, help me, help me” and “thank you, thank you, thank you” (p. 82). I think that pretty well sums things up: what are we grateful for, and what do we need help with.Q: ANY SAMPLE PRAYERS, BY CHANCE, TO GET ME STARTED?A: Sure. Here are a few adapted from some of Martin Luther’s prayers that may be helpful:Prayer at morning: ank you, Dear God, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger and o er this new day to live in and share your love. I pray that you would keep me this day from sin and every evil, and that all my doings and life may please you and honor my neighbor. In Jesus’ name, Amen.Prayer at evening: ank you, Dear God, that you have graciously kept me near you this day. Please forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night and grant me rest to rise and serve you by serving my neighbor tomorrow. Into your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.Prayer before meals: Dear God, bless us and these your gifts which we receive from your goodness. Use them to help us become the people you need us to be in this world you love so much. In Jesus’ name, Amen. ere’s much more to say about prayer, of course. But perhaps you will nd time this summer to rekindle, or even start, your conversations with God. Remember, you can share anything!

DAVID J. LOSE, SENIOR PASTOR

This summer our staff is hard at work on two signifi cant projects that will strengthen our ability to carry out our mission and ministries in the months and years to come. The fi rst project involves moving to a NEW

SOFTWARE system to oversee our congregational data. We are making this shift because our current software will not be supported come 2019 and because it lacked several features we desired. After reviewing numerous potential software packages, we made our decision and are currently importing all of our congregational data into the new system, training staff to use it, and preparing tools to help all of our members learn how to access the software. With this new system, you will be able to more easily register for events, make a pledge or capital campaign gift, update personal information, track your giving, and more. We take tremendous care with our member’s data, and with more than 14,000 members, you can imagine what a big job it is to transfer and check the accuracy of all that information. The second project is to develop an entirely NEW WEBSITE that will offer a compelling and creative “digital welcome” to visitors and provide both visitors and members with all the information they need to become actively engaged in Mount Olivet’s ministries. Recent research has demonstrated that the majority of people looking for a church home visit a prospective church’s website well before ever entering the doors and make their decisions about which churches to visit based almost entirely on the website. With this new site, we hope to provide an exciting and inviting introduction to Mount Olivet for those who are new and to offer up-to-date information on our events and offerings for members and visitors alike. In time, we also expect the website to host faith-deepening resources for all ages. It is an exciting project! Yes, we are hard at work updating and expanding the ways we connect with you and with those who are looking for a caring, GOSPEL-

CENTERED FAITH HOME. All of this work can only be accomplished through your generous and faithful giving. I also want to thank you for your gifts and even ask you for your prayers for our staff who are undertaking these major projects and for all the people looking for a church who will be impacted by them.YOURS IN CHRIST, PASTOR LOSEC

Pastor Charlie RuudWhy are you excited to be at Mount Olivet? It might be an understate-ment to say that Mount Olivet seems like quite a unique church! I confess, I enter not without a healthy dose of fear and trembling! Yet, I’m so intrigued and excited to

be invited into the mix. I’m especially excited to work with and alongside Pastor Lose and the entire developing pastoral team. It looks to be a fun and faithful crew! Given Mount Olivet’s faithful legacy, resources, and size, I’m so curious and eager to see how it will continue to be led and shaped in new and old ways to welcome, usher, and extend God’s Word to each other and all people in this current day and context. What do you love about being a pastor? My dad always says that one of the biggest privileges as a pastor is to be with people in the most meaningful times of life – birth, death, transitions, struggles, and celebrations – and be asked to give presence, ear, and word of how Christ seeks to meet us. I couldn’t agree more! It is precious to be tasked to care for the gospel, wrestle with deep questions of life and faith, and try to listen, speak, and act in how Christ is continuing to lead us. I love the holy hilarity, the astounding variety, the meaningful mess, and the ever-humbling challenge of what this profession entails!

The installation of Pastor Ruud will take place on July 8 during the 11am Mpls Campus service.

prior to him starting at Mount Olivet on August 1.

Meet Our New Associate PastorsMark DixonWhy are you excited to be at Mount Olivet? I am excited to join the Mount Olivet community for so many reasons. In terms of my vocation, this call was especially compelling because it represented a chance to work with a team of fellow pastors. One of the greatest challenges during my PhD years has been the isolation of dissertation writing. As someone who has been deeply in uenced by years of participation in team sports, I am very eager to begin a new chapter marked by collaboration. I’m also drawn to Mount Olivet because of this congregation’s ambition and potential. God can do just about anything in and through such a church! What do you love about being a pastor? To be honest, the things I love most about pastoral ministry are also the things that give me the most butter ies. It is an awesome challenge to go from reading Scripture to actually preaching the gospel. It is also an awesome responsibility, the weight of which is felt by every pastor I know (even the old pros!). I also love that as pastors, we have the honor of being invited to join people for the most important transitions in their lives. It is such a joyful duty to remind people of God’s promise and help them weave that promise through their lives in holy moments.

Waters of Renewal “You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they ow between the hills, giving drink to every wild animal; the wild asses quench their thirst. By the streams the birds of the air have their habitation; they sing among the branches. From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satis ed with the fruit of your work.” PSALM 104:10-13

One summer during college I worked as a camp counselor at Christikon, an ELCA camp in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness of Montana, just north of Yellowstone National Park. While on trail, we’d often encounter a stream or river and have to cross it. To do so, we’d take o our hiking boots and don our stream-crossing shoes. Groups welcomed these stream crossings for they o ered a brief rest from hiking, a chance to cool aching feet in the water, and – more often than not – a moment to laugh and enjoy the presence of one another.

roughout the Bible, God works through water to bring healing, life, and renewal. e Israelites escape through the parting of the Red Sea, Naaman’s leprosy is healed after he washes in the Jordan River, and the Samaritan woman receives Christ’s living water. Mount Olivet Rolling Acres UpdateGlee Club, day camp, Capitol Hill, diversity

training, Santa, hospice, McGregor and yoga … what do these all have in common? ey are highlights of my rst year as president of Mount Olivet Rolling Acres (MORA).

MORA is a disability services ministry that has a long-standing tradition of support and connection to Mount Olivet. We support people with disabilities through our group homes, homemaking services, crisis prevention, case management, summer camp, day programming, and recreational activities. We are based in Chanhassen, we have 33 homes in the southwest metro, our services cover the seven metro counties, we touch over 1,000 people, and our sta is simply the BEST!

In the last year, we have worked hard to create opportunities, happiness, and meaning in the lives of the people we support. Our Glee Club performed the National Anthem at one of the Super Bowl events. e kids in our Discover Summer day camp pontooned and caught a ton of sh. e people we support, our sta , and guardians marched at the Capitol to advocate for people with disabilities and their sta . We hosted a full-day training on understanding and celebrating diversity; both in the people we support as well as in the sta that we love. Santa visited our adult day program and main o ce, giving out hugs and candy canes. We took full advantage of our cabins at McGregor with summer camp, a veteran’s program, as well as giving our residents a chance to “go to the lake” for a long weekend with their families and housemates. Yoga was added as a weekly activity thanks to the generous donation of time and talent from our very own personal yogi. We also honored the last days and weeks of three important people that we had supported for years. anks to our caring and dedicated sta , they were able to experience hospice in their home, surrounded by love and gentleness. Overall, it has been a richly rewarding year.

Wondering how you can keep up with all that Rolling Acres has going on? Visit our updated website at mtolivetrollingacres.org. is year we added Senior Leadership and Board Member photos and bios, links to our nancial documents, and daily updates on our clients, sta , and milestones. Marsh Walk Rebuild! One visit to Mount Olivet Conference & Retreat

Center is all it takes to become captivated by the serene beauty that surrounds guests while on site. With opportunities to expand understanding, enjoyment and appreciation of God’s creation, the Retreat Center and its trail system provide the perfect backdrop for individual and group growth. One unique feature of the Retreat Center trail system is the marsh walk – a fl oating walkway that provides access to a small island off the shore of Chub Lake. The island is an ideal place for refl ection with benches placed at two beautiful look out points.

Construction of the marsh walk started in 1986. It was completed over two summers and dedicated on August 30, 1987 in memory of GARY HOLSTAD, Troop 110 scoutmaster at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church for 23 years, who passed away unexpectedly in 1985. Gary was instrumental in developing the Retreat Center trail system and had left behind his own vision and notes about one day creating a marsh nature walk.

In the spring of 2012, a heavy rainstorm caused the marsh walk to break apart in three places. Although repaired in those places after the storm, it is evident that 30 years of weather and use have taken their toll. To ensure safe access to the marsh and the island, it is time to rebuild the marsh walk. We plan to do so this fall, pending approval from the DNR.

The cost to rebuild the marsh walk and remove the old one is $127,500. Generous gifts from our supporters and budgeted funds toward this project total $35,000 thus far, leaving $92,500 for us to raise. We can realize signifi cant savings with the assistance of volunteers to help with the demolition of the existing marsh walk.

To make a gift, go to mtolivet.org and use the online donation form. Please note your gift is for the marsh walk. Or you may send a check to: Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, Marsh Walk Project, 5025 Knox Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55419. Why Settle for Mediocre?Like many of you, I was fortunate to have parents, grand-

parents, and great grandparents who expected much of themselves when it came to living their faith. To worship every Sunday, to read and study the Bible on a daily basis, to make time for prayer, and to faithfully give of their time and resources was more than a discipline; it directed how they lived. When life was di cult and uncertain, the Bible and their families – personal and congregational – were where they looked for comfort and wisdom and care.

Fortunately, that example nags at me, because like so many of us, I nd it too easy to let the busyness and distractions determine how I live my faith life instead of faith determining how I live my life. I become so preoccupied that I settle for a “mediocre version.” But that nagging example pulls me back and then I once again realize what a gift it is to have your priorities in order!

We all savor our precious Minnesota summer days when life beckons us to take it easy and be a little lazy! Doing so usually means setting priorities. is summer, I invite you to join me in resolving to give worship, Bible reading, prayer, and our church the priority they deserve. Why settle for mediocre when a life directed by faith o ers so much more? CAROL THRONTVEIT, DIRECTOR ADULT LEARNING

Summertime Players! Summertime Players! is a musical arts camp where both middle and high school students work with incredible choreographers and vocal coaches to learn dances and songs for a show at the end of nine days. We work on the numbers in the morning and then go somewhere fun like a pool or bowling in the afternoon. It’s pretty amazing that a bunch of kids with a passion for music and dance can come together in such a short time to put on a special production. I started doing Summertime Players! when I was going into 7th grade because I had heard about it through some older friends who really loved it. I’d done the musical at my school the spring before and wanted to do something to continue dancing and singing in a similar environment. I continue to do Summertime Players! because it’s a fun opportunity to see your friends for two weeks and get to know others with similar interests as you. My friends and I still remember the dance from “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” two years ago and we do it when we’re hanging out and it comes on! I encourage you to get involved in Summertime Players! because it’s an awesome place to bond with your friends and follow your passions for music and dance! See the sidebar on page 11 for STP! information. – SYLVIA OTTESON

8th-Gr Leadership Retreat is is a fun and impactful retreat for our incoming 8th-Grade Leaders that gives them the opportunity to connect and build relationships with their junior high youth sta and peers. We really enjoy this retreat because we are able to recognize our actively involved youth and allow them to see the great leadership skills that we see in them. It takes place in late August right before school starts up so that we can all get ready for another great year at Mount Olivet. If you are an 8th-grader looking to become a part of our 8th-Grade Leaders group, please contact Youth Director Geo Arenson at geo [email protected]. See the sidebar on page 11 for retreat information.

Cathedral of the PinesGoing up to camp has been one of the most stable things in my life. I always knew that every summer I would be going up north to Cathedral of the Pines Camp. I would wait the whole year to go back and when the camp rally came around I was counting down the days until I got to be there. Cathedral of the Pines has shaped me into the person I am today. e love that everyone feels at camp has rubbed o on me, and I have shared that love with others. I believe that camp is one of the happiest places on earth because you feel pure happiness without technology. Camp has made me into the type of person who is comfortable meeting new people – for instance, when I am put into cabins with people I might have not known very well. Also, camp has taught me how to be away from home for multiple days, overall turning me into a more con dent and independent person. I believe camp has shaped me into a person who is willing to serve others and has the con dence to do so. I am forever grateful for my time spent at Cathedral of the Pines. – GRACE STRATTON

9th-Gr Confi rmation Camp How fun would it be if you were able to spend a week of your summer with the friends you have made throughout your time in Con rmation? Well you get to! 9th-Grade Con rmation Camp is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the completion of your Con rmation requirements with your Con rmation class! Best of all, you get to be up at Cathedral of the Pines! is week at camp is lled with so many amazing activities and theme meals. It also is full of opportunities to strengthen your faith and your friendships. We can’t wait to see all of you incoming 9th-graders at Cathedral of the Pines this month!

Confi rmation Registration Opening in July Con rmation at Mount Olivet is a 21/2 -year program beginning with the First Communion in the spring of 6th grade and concluding with a Service of Con rmation at the beginning of 9th grade. e Con rmation program helps 7th- and 8th-graders learn more about the Bible, Lutheranism, faith, and God while building relationships with their peers, pastors, and church. During these very important years, students are instructed weekly by pastors, small group leaders, and youth program leaders. We encourage you to make Con rmation a top priority – a weekly commitment that enables you to develop greater relationships with other Con rmation students, pastors, and leaders. $50 per year. Scholarships available. Each student needs to register each year they plan to participate.Confi rmation Class Times
