I sometimes wonder if, in the grand scheme of Christian holidays, Easter gets a bit of short shrift. I know, I know, that sounds odd, especially at this time of year. After all, in many ways, we pull out all the stops for our Easter celebration: full choirs, brass, special music, gorgeous flowers decorating the chancel, and more. And yet… And yet, once Easter is over, do we give it much thought? How does the fact that God raised Jesus from the dead shape our decisions, actions, and way of life? Or, for that matter, does the fact that God raised Jesus from the dead shape our decisions, actions, and way of life? I’m not so sure. Sometimes I think we get so focused on the cross and God’s promise of forgiveness that we overlook, even undervalue, the resurrection. Don’t get me wrong. e cross is central to our faith and forgiveness is absolutely essential to our lives. But the Christian story doesn’t end with Jesus’ death. It continues, indeed reaches its climax, in the resurrection. In an attempt to push us more deeply into the possibilities Easter holds for us, I’m going to ask what I think is a distinctly Easter question: Now what?! I sometimes wonder if, in the grand scheme of Christian holidays, Easter gets a bit of short shrift. I know, I know, that sounds odd, especially at this time of year. After all, in many ways, we pull out all the stops for our Easter celebration: full choirs, brass, special music, gorgeous owers decorating the chancel, and more.

To put it another way, we are not only freed from sin and guilt by the cross, but we are also freed for lives of courage and con dence through the resurrection.

In an attempt to push us more deeply into the possibilities Easter holds for us, I’m going to ask what I think is a distinctly Easter question: Now what?! Once Easter is over, that is, what will you do?

everything is di erent. At least, if we let sink in what just happened, everything can be di erent. Keep in mind what we confess on Easter: that God’s love is more powerful than hate, that God’s light is more powerful than the darkness, and that God’s life is more powerful than even death itself. In short, there is nothing that can stop God’s love, light, and life. And knowing that – believing that – makes a di erence.

For instance, and building on our Lenten theme, we don’t have to be dominated by fear, because the resurrection demonstrates that God can go with us anywhere – even to the darkest places – and bring us through. ere may still be moments when we’re afraid, I know. But each time we feel scared or alone, it will help to remember God’s great love for us, a love that nothing – absolutely nothing – can separate us from.

Which brings me back to my Easter question: Now what? Now what will you do since you know God will always be with you? Now what will you dare to accomplish since you’ve seen the power of God’s love? Now who will you help since you know God loves all people? Now what?

Over the course of my career, I’ve worked with a variety of business consultants who are very good at asking thoughtful, even provocative questions to help their clients look at things from a di erent vantage point and thereby gain a new perspective. One of my favorites goes like this: What would you try if you knew you couldn’t fail? It’s a good question because it helps us see how much our fears hold us back and opens us up to possibilities we may not even have considered because of our anxiety.

It’s a good question, but one I’d like to tweak just a bit. Because, here’s the thing: we will fail. We will struggle. We will experience set-backs. Easter doesn’t spell the end of challenge or pain or failure or even death. Rather, Easter promises that these things do not and will not have the last word. Jesus is raised from the dead, not exempted from death.

So here’s my favorite consultant question, slightly revised: What would you try, do, and dare if you knew that, even though you may fail, it ultimately doesn’t matter because God is with you and for you and will never let you go?

Now let’s go a little further. What would you have your congregation do in light of Jesus’ triumph over death? What risks shall we take? What bets shall we place? Whom shall we invite and help? What di erence do we want our congregation to make in our communities?

ese are the kinds of questions we get to ask when we take Easter seriously and realize that Easter isn’t a single celebration, or even a whole season, but rather a way of life. ese are the questions we get to answer as we live into the new reality God has created through the promise of resurrection. For once death has been defeated, nothing can hold us back.

And so I’ll ask once more: What now? What will life look like as you go into this new week, month, and year lled with God’s love and light? What will you dare? What will we risk together empowered by God’s love?

I don’t know exactly how we will answer these questions, of course, but I do know that – armed with the promise of resurrection – together we can do something awesome. Because Easter and the power of God’s love changes everything.

Combined Sunday School & Choir Options Expanding this Fall!“O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things … Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises…Let the oods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy at the presence of the LORD.” – PSALM 98:1A, 4, 8

Sing to the LORD a new song! is fall, Mount Olivet will be launching a new program at the Minneapolis Campus that will combine Sunday School and Choir. We are excited to announce this new concept that will integrate music and movement, stories and song, as our children continue to learn God’s story and grow in faith together.

In addition to the current Sunday School options, there will be expanded o erings of these combined Sunday morning classes:

9am Sundays CHAPEL SUNDAY SCHOOL (4TH-6TH GR)ALLELUIA SUNDAY SCHOOL (K-1ST GR)CHERUB SUNDAY SCHOOL (3-5YRS)

10am SundaysHOSANNA SUNDAY SCHOOL (2ND-3RD GR)ALLELUIA SUNDAY SCHOOL (K-1ST GR)CHERUB SUNDAY SCHOOL (3-5YRS)

e Cherub Sunday School class o ered during the 2017-18 Sunday School year has been the most well-attended class throughout the school year. Combining traditional Sunday School lessons with music and movement has not only increased retention, but has also engaged students as they have built friendships and have grown in community with one another and with God.“Our family has enjoyed the Sunday School / Choir option because our two children have been able to develop deeper relationships with the friends from their class as they learn and sing together as a group. We also feel it keeps our children’s focus, because they have di erent fun activities they are doing throughout the hour. We have loved this option and will continue to utilize this as long as it is available!”– STEVE & LINDSAY ASP

“It’s been a real pleasure to be a part of the new combined Sunday school choir class. It is a joy to see the children experience and grow their faith through music and word.” – LISA STOBB, SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER

For families whose schedule may not allow for a weeknight choir practice, the new Choir Sunday School classes provide the opportunity for kids to participate in choir. Choirs for all age levels will continue to be o ered on Tuesday nights, along with the popular family dinner served in the youth center. In the future, the hope is to expand this program at the West Campus in the new facilities.Fall Choir Sunday School registration is open now at mtolivet.org!

Kat Perkins Sings May 13On May 13, KAT PERKINS will sing at all Mpls Campus worship services. Growing up the daughter of a music teacher, Kat has been singing, dancing, and performing

for as long as she can remember. After graduating from high school in North Dakota, Kat moved

to Minneapolis where her enormous talent and undeniable stage presence carved out a place for her on both the music and theater stages of the Twin Cities. She began travelling overseas and proudly performed for our troops serving in the Middle East. On her way home from a military show, Kat gave an impromptu performance around a piano in an airport in Amsterdam – a video that went viral. A year later, she was invited to audition for “ e Voice” and went all the way to the TOP 5 where her coach, Adam Levine, said: “Kat Perkins is hands down one of the best singers we’ve ever had on e Voice.” Kat now travels the country, performing, and sharing with kids her message of remaining determined, fearless, and following their dreams. Her rst single, Fearless, hit #5 upon release on iTunes with her latest single, Drive, charting within 24 hours of its release. When not on stage, you can nd Kat nannying, writing, recording, managing other bands, and constantly coming up with new projects.

Billy Graham, 1918-2018 Presidents, power-brokers, and common people everywhere

continue to mourn the death of America’s Pastor, Evangelist BILLY

GRAHAM. After years of preaching of death’s inevitability, he squarely faced his own. In contrast to an increasingly death-defying culture, Billy Graham tackled the topic of death often and with surprising frankness for a preacher who made his living and built an evangelical movement preaching the Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ.

First, he said, “Accept the fact that you will die.” Second, “Make arrangements.” ird, “Make provision for those you are leaving behind.” And nally, “Make an appointment with God.”

Ever the realist, Graham understood that it is natural to fear death. Everyone did. But facing it squarely put life in a longer perspective. “ e future is as bright as the promises of God.”

I recall that in fth grade our teacher asked our class to name our heroes, people we most admire. It took no time for me to reply, “Raphael Mendez (virtuoso trumpeter), and that preacher Billy Graham.” I will never forget the rst time I heard Mendez play and Billy Graham preach. e music may fade away but Billy Graham’s proclamation of God’s eternal promises remains as powerful and precious as the hour I rst believed.

A Dining Table Finds a New Home and Helps Mount Olivet’s “Homes”

Last spring, it came time to part with my dining room table. I have never really been attached to “things,” but for some reason I found this very di cult. is table, like your dining table, had a story. I touched it and shed a tear as I remembered 35 years of family and friends gathering at this table – including my aunt, grandmother, and my dear mother. Each one of those dear souls was cared for in their last years at Mount Olivet Home, so as I ruminated about what to do with my dining room table, it just felt right to donate it to the Mount Olivet Homes Auxiliary (MOHA) Garage Sale. I kept checking on my table during the sale to see if anyone had purchased it. On the last day, when

prices were lowered, someone was seen touching the table and said, “Oh, I can just imagine my family sitting around this table, but I have no way to get it to my house ...” Bless Ken Slinde, he o ered to deliver it to her home. Now I hope and imagine my dear table is building memories with another family as they gather together. When my mother was placed in Careview, having been a life-long Mount Olivet member, even with her dementia, she felt like she had come “home.” It seems tting then that the proceeds from the table are going to Mount Olivet Homes. We should be proud that at Mount Olivet we care for the most vulnerable and that all proceeds from the annual MOHA Garage Sale go to the Mount Olivet Day Services, Mount Olivet Home, Mount Olivet Careview Home, and Mount Olivet Rolling Acres. Please consider supporting the MOHA Garage Sale this year. Here are the ways you can help:

Each one of those dear souls was cared for in their last years at Mount Olivet Home, so as I ruminated about what to do with my dining room table, it just felt right to donate it to the Mount Olivet

prices were lowered, someone was seen touching the table and said, “Oh, I can just imagine my family sitting around this table, but I have no way to get it to my house ...” Bless Ken Slinde,
